If it's online the whole world can read it and DON'T INCLUDE YOUR ADDRESS!

A 14-year-old girl from Hertfordshire who included her address on a Facebook invitation to her party was alarmed when 21,000 said they would be coming.

The party was cancelled when the school pupil was swamped by RSVPs from unwanted would-be guests on the social networking site.

The girl, from Harpenden, had reportedly only intended to invite 15 friends to her 15th birthday party.

"alarmed" has to be the understatement of the century.

Ummm, that's why you set it to private so only admins can invite people. That actually happened to one of my friends in July, she didn't set it to private and tons of people got invited to her party(though she did know all, or most of them) she didn't want them there. So she "canceled" the event then created a new one.

I have an address on facebook, but I put it as 22 Acacia Avenue. Which is only and Iron Maiden song :P I'm sure that address exists somewhere..

That is why you use the "old fashioned" postal and send out written invitations to those you want to attend the party, that way there will be no "unwanted" attendees or RSVP's.

After reading this thread...

Handwriting (by mt99 Sep 21 2010 in Non Aviation)

... I'm tempted to say: what? postal? Would an email be fine as well?

Seriously, I don't even get wedding invitation by paper mail anymore. If I invited people to a party that way, I'd probably make the 1st page on our local newspaper.

Has this girl never heard of texting? That's how I usually organize a get-together of that size (10-20 people). Only the people I want to come are invited, and they get back to me quickly.

I don't know why but I find that to be a very sad statement about society in 2010.

I have a serious question: what is so sad about not using paper mail anymore? I fail to find the cute/romantic/whatever component in sending (or receiving) paper mail - except postcards. It's fun to get the exotic stamps from abroad and whatnot. But for regular, day-to-day communication, I find it to be obsolete, cumbersome and expensive.

Is this just me?

A wedding invitation is part of your day-to-day communication?

Agreed. I don't have a problem with much of the communication that used to be done by letter being done by email now, but there's something that rubs me the wrong way about emailed wedding invitations. It's a special occasion that will only happen once in your life (hopefully). Take the time to get some nice card stock and mail some high quality invitations to your friends and family. Email is to impersonal.
