Guys,
Im an average teenager and I drink a lot of Coca Cola!! My folks say its not healthy to be drinking so much!!

But is too much of it bad? I know the saying "Too Much Of A Good Thing Is Bad For You" Anyone know for sure?

I love it, and it is addictive [and yummy] though! I only have one or two glasses a week, because well it's NOT healthy obviously! I remember hearing years back that if you put a piece of red meat in a coke can for a day or so it will be entirely 'eaten away' by the liquid - not sure what truth there is in it - I've never tried it, but it wouldn't surprise me! Notice how your teeth feel after drinking that stuff too?!  

One of the ingrediants is phosphoric acid, apparently used to make it non cloudy. Phosphoric acid is used as an excellent rust treatment.

I drink diet/lite coke. No sugar in that so it is supposed to be healthier. I wonder if it really makes any difference.

Clinically, the primary concerns with Coke are its pH (acidity) and its decalcification qualities. Coke's pH is 3.0 (roughly)--that makes it quite acidic (neutral is 7). In fact, it's as acidic as some battery acids--but don't worry, the battery acid his much higher molarity (concentration) than Coke. The other concern is its decalcification qualities--studies have shown that Coke can actually remove calcium from your bones!

In Diet Coke, there's the NutraSweet (NutraPoison) problem--the sweetener in it is aspartame. Over 80 degrees Fahrenheit (27 degrees Celsius), it breaks down into phenylalanine (hence the warning: "Attention phenylketoneurics: contains phenylalanine")--an amino acid that some people are sensitive to...in them, aspartame can cause brain damage. The other concern is the two substances it breaks down in to: aspartic acid and formaldehyde. You're all familiar with formaldehyde, but aspartic acid is what a fire ant injects under your skin that hurts so much. In your system, it doesn't cause pain, but rather crosses the blood/brain barrier and can affect your brain as well.

In summary, a Coke or four a week won't kill you. A Diet Coke or four a week might.

Coca Cola was originally developed as a cough medicine. Reportedly one of the ingredents in it was Cocaine, hence the name.

Anyway it was sold as cough syrup to drugstores in the south as a syrup that was to be cut down with water before being sold to the patron.

One day at a drugstore the clerk screwed up. Instead of using plain water to thin the syrup he used soda water, and a legend was born.

The problem is the amount of sugar - one can of Coke contains 33 grammes of pue sugar, which is the equivalent of 33 cubes. Imagine eating 33 cubes of sugar instead of drinking on can of Coke and figure out what that´s going to do to your teeth and weight in the long term.

I like Coke when it is flat. Meaning not much CO2 in it. I drink Pepsi more than Coke though.

If you open up a trunk of a police car than you will probably run into a Coke can. Because they use it to clean up blood residue.

Coca-Cola itself is not addictive but the Caffeine in it is. Maybe if you have a headache then try sipping on Coca-Cola. But Pepsi is my favorite.

The problem with Coca Cola, well, pretty much all soft drinks for that matter, is the amount of suger it contains. As someone already pointed out, a can of Coca Cola contains approximately 33 grams of suger. Conventional wisdom has always stated that fat makes you overweight, but nowadays we're discovering that it's actually carbohydrates (the food group under which sugar falls; also includes breads, pastas, rice, potatoes & legumes) and not fats which cause us to become overweight.

When you drink that can of soda, your body will immediately try to digest the sugars. In order of digestion, sugars are always the first to go. Your pancreas will release insulin, which is responsible for metabolizing sugars, which will also temporarily turn off the fat-burning process since an abundance of energy (sugars) is already present in the blood stream. The sugars will then be taken to the muscles in order to be quickly used up, but if the body happens to be at rest, i.e., not involved in any strenuous activity, then the insulin will actually store the sugars as fat, since there's not enough demand for energy. THIS is what leads to weight problems. This is also why energy bars and energy drinks have high sugar content, as they're meant to be taken while the body has a high demand for energy (i.e., sports activities, etc.).

The more carbohydrates you eat/drink, the more the pancreas has to release insulin in order to remove the sugars from the blood. By inundating your body with too many carbohydrates, over the years the body may become desensitized to insulin, so that the pancreas has to release more and more insulin in order to get the same job done. It may finally come to a point where the body has become so desensitized to insulin because of the massive amounts of sugars consumed, that it loses its effects. This is called diabetes, and recently we've been seeing a rapid rise in diabetes, not only in humans, but also in household pets who are also fed high carbohydrates diet (i.e., corn, wheat, rice mixed in with their feed).

Before those 33 grams of sugar actually reach the stomach, they must first pass through the mouth where they do quite a number on the teeth. If not cleaned very properly, plaque and cavities may form on the teeth and beneath the gumline from the high sugar content of soft drinks and other fast foods.

So you see, too many sugars are VERY dangerous. Instead of eating so many food containing processed carbohydrates, try eating fruits and fresh vegetables, which contain the perfect proportion of sugars that the body needs and can efficiently handle without resulting in insulin dependency.

I Read a story about an overweight girl in the newspaper. She went to a party, had something like 12 glasses of soda and went into diabetic shock not soon after. Her diet, which includes an insatiable apetite for soft drinks, has left her with "adult-onset" diabetes. Really a sad thing.

I really remember the dangers of Coke from an elementary school science fair. I built a wind tunnel and did aerodynamics tests. It was a hell of a thing. Some girl I knew waltzes in and wins the prize for dropping a friggen baby tooth in some Coke and my two weeks of hard work get nothing. Er-I think I may be getting a little off topic.

I drink a lot of Diet Coke and love it. I know its unhealthy, but what nice things actually are?!!!! I think as long as you have anything in moderation, you will be fine!

If you want to see just how bad coke really is. Open a can of Coke, pour the soda into a glass, Scrape off the protective layer inside the can. Replace the Coke and by the next morning the Coke has eaten through the aluminum. We did that in a chemistry class. I personally can't stand coke and drink only pepsi products when available.

Coca cola is certainly not good for your health.

It contains lot's of sugar and several things like E330 which are dangerous for cancer.

I don't drink it a lot! About two times a week.

I believe that Fanta is more worse than Coca cola, but both are bad. Not to mention those things like Dr. Pepper, Red Bull,...

I'm obssessed with Coke, i cant stop drinking it, specially with ice!! I dont over-do it, but i drink it often, cant resist it though!

When I was younger (10 ish), I used to really like coke, then heard all the bad things it does to you, so stopped drinking it for years and years. Now I can't get enough of it, but it has to be ICE cold, between me and my girlfriend we go thru 2, 12 can multipacks a week!!. We drink so much of it, we even have a little box to put all our empty cans in to take to the re-cycling centre.

Coca-Cola can be used as a INDUSTRAL CLEANER!!!!

What pepsi has no sugar? Pepsi isn't much different then coke just less acid or atleast it tastes like it is.

to all teenagers out there that drink alot of soda I offer you this advice... cut yourself off soda's for awhile and just see how you feel. I noticed when I stoped drinking soda's I felt much better all around. I seemed to feel more energetic for long periods of time when I would play hockey. My friends also did the same and noticed they felt better without drinking that junk. So give it a try and see if you will do better without the liquid candy.

Never drink soft drinks (soda's) of any description, except perhaps dry ginger ale as mixer for Scotch.

Switch that coke / diet coke for a beer, you'll feel a whole lot better.

lol, umm no.    Police don't even clean up blood residue, we don't carry cleaners, lol. The closest thing would be a big container of hand sanitizer. If you find Coke it's in a cooler because it tastes good and has caffeine.

True story~

My uncle was cleaning his car battery, and he knew the acidity and all that crap about coke, so he tried to clean the battery with coke. He said that it looked as good, or even better, than new since it ate up all of the crap already on the battery.

I like Pepsi better. Energy drinks are good once in a while.

BTW~ I hate the way yer teeth feel after you have had a glass of coke.

Someone showed me how to clean electric barbecue hotplates using lemonade - very effective too! Haven't tried coke for that one yet though. 

Geezzz, I'm not sure I'm alright with drinking something that can double as a car battery cleaner!!!

I love Coca Cola, buy it by the box, not because I like it that much but because I can buy it at a third the price from the supermarket. Regular shop price for a 375ml Coke from the corner shop, Shell, 7-Eleven is about AUD$1.50 but when you buy in lots of 30 from the supermarket the price drops to Aud$0.50 a can.

Everything is bad in excess. I have heard of people overdosing on orange juice, and after I drink a milk drink makes me sound like I have cold. So I stick with coke. Also a cup of tea is good but doesn't give me the needed caffeine fix.

Pepsi whats that, you rarely see Pepsi in the shops.

So Coke is bad, is Pepsi REALLY any better??!!

Coca-Cola has been around, what, over a hundred years? During that time average lifespans have risen dramatically in a population that I'm sure you'll all agree has consumed its' fair share of Coke over the years (interesting marketing note: the distinctive curved shape of the Coca-Cola bottle is the single most recognized brand trademark in the world).

The first rule of eating and drinking is too much of anything is bad.

Looking back to when I left home to go to college, I ate too much fast food and drank too much soft drinks, partly because it was quick and tasty but also probably as a sign of independence from my folks, who quite rightly limited the intake of both when I was a young kid and in only partial control of my own diet. I think a lot of us in our late teens/early 20s overdue it with the sweets, the fats (the alcohol?)...all the things that are bad for us but are quickly available in our youthful freedom.

Drink away. You'll grow out of it.

That is Coke. But what about Pepsi, Dr. Pepper, Root Beer and all the other soft drinks?

Pepsi is no alternative, coke is coke, there's nothing like it. And it's damn addictive!!

Regarding the cocaine in the original Coca-Cola formula, it alas is close to being an urban legend. Yes, there actually was blow in the original formula, but the amount was far too small to have any physiological effect.

I've switched to iced tea... much better for you and tastes very smooth. Also, if you make it from a powder, it's way cheaper too!

Caffiene is bad for your heart as it speeds it up and coke is full of caffiene. I was told to only drink caffiene free drinks such as mist or sprite.

But Flyingbronco05, the sugar in sprite is just as deadly as the caffine in Coke.

Put a nail in a glass of coke, and in 4 days it will have been completely dissolved. Also, if you need a clean toilet, pour some coke in there and let it sit for a little while. You'll have a nice, white bowl. Or, if you've just finished mowing the lawn and doing some lawn work, put it in the compost pile and pour a two litre bottle of coke on it. You'll have a perfect compost pile in much quicker time.

Now, who's up for a coke?

I'm glad you told me all those uses for Coke, because now I'm going to throw out the dozen or so other products I use and just buy Coke for everything.

I love the stuff: both coke and diet coke are good. Put it over ice and I know what people who smoke must feel like, because sometimes I've just got to have one. I feel a lot better just having one in my hand.

Hey RogueTrader. You think coke does wonders for cleaning, try using a block of Spam on a wood table. Works great(so I've heard). Many other food items you can use to clean but I don't feel like listing them.

P.S. Still have all my teeth except the ones knocked out from being a teenager.

I too am addicted to Coca Cola, I'm drinking one right now actually. My teeth are still very healthy, but I brush AT LEAST 3 times a day. I do need to cut back on it though, simply because of the sugar.
