This past weekend on the TV station G4 they had a show where they counted down the top 100 video game of all time. Here is the list they came up with.

What do you think of their choices? Would you change or add anything?

As for me I would add Tomb Radier to the list somewhere. And how could they have Ms. Pac-Man but leave out the original Pac-Man??

I would have liked to see GTA3 lower on the list like top 10. Also would have liked to see NBA hang time but guess NBA jam is somewhat the same. Also no Mario Cart 64? That's a travesty. Anyone else here play the Mario cart drinking game?

Quick observation.

The only one they got right was Super Mario Bros at 1.

Halo 2 not even on the list when it was the best one of them all.

Bioshock at 3?

I guess this list does justify Billy Madison's argument for Donkey Kong....

They have GTA III (never played it) and IV (played it, was pretty good), but no San Andreas? GTA SA was an awesome game.

Still...Words with Friends? How does that even count as a video game?

GTA San Andreas was the best one, but GTA III was the one that was revolutionary and belongs on this list much higher than 25.

I also think that Need for Speed and Gran Turismo both need to be on this list. Frankly I think Microsoft Flight Simulator belongs here too.

There's a lot more to that than some of the early video games. It's definitely a significant title in terms of making video games a social, mobile activity. It is good to see Angry Birds on the list though.

Forgot to say flight sim. Probably 2002 or 2004. FS98 or FS2000 were game changers too. But I guess some of us might say its not a game  but one of them should be there.

Also no SIM CITY?? Sim City 2000 at least!

I'm a bit insulted Goldeneye only got 8th place. Easily my all time favorite. Super Mario 64 also ranked pretty "low" surprisingly. And for the record, Pokemon red/bue (my childhood) was twice the game Angry Birds could ever hope to be.

A bunch of BS, this list! Words with Friends and Angry Birds?! Gotta be kidding me. As a gamer, this list is rather depressing. Though I don't play, World of Warcraft should be ~5. The game has 10+ MILLION subscriptions. Goldeneye's ranking is abysmal. Bioshock wasn't that great. Skyrim should be ranked ~20 or better. Portal is ranked too high.

I'd have liked to see Call of Duty 4 ranked a bit higher. That was a great game. All CoDs since then have been garbage.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 3 should be on the list. The Frostbite and Frostbite 2 engines are amazing. Gotta love destructible environments!!

Oh, and poor poor Pokemon

98. Pitfall

My favorite game for Atari

Quoting dragon-wings (Thread starter):
77. Excitebike

Favorite game for the Nintendo NES. I used to play it at the arcade

64. NBA Jam

I loved how Dennis Rodman's hair would change colors during the game

Quoting dragon-wings (Thread starter):
4. Asteroids

Owned the full size cabinet version of that one, so did my buddy, Gerry.

Quoting dragon-wings (Thread starter):
5. Tetris

Wasted a lot of time playing that in my computer in the early 1990s

I am shocked Pole Position is not on the list, it is my favorite video game ever! I could easily waste an afternoon playing Pole Position or Super Sega GP.

I never owned a game system and never will. I was always a big fan of going to the arcade and playing games with my friends. Sure it cost a lot of money, but it was worth it. There was a different challenge at the arcade on a cabinet machine. I remember playing Super Mario Brothers on a cabinet and I got good at it, but when I would go to a friend's house and play on their NES I would suck because the controller was too small.

NBA Hang Time was just an updated version...they are pretty much the same game for all intents and purposes. I'm much happier seeing NBA Jam get the nod. "Ramalamadingdong!"

I was surprised by that as well. I put a lot of hours into those games as a kid and am looking forward to the new version that's supposed to be coming out.

I suppose it's worth mentioning (given the present company) that MS Flight Sim is absent from this list...kind of hard to believe given its endurance over the years.

Fallout 3 in Rank 75 ??? No way! It should be in the Top 20's. Same with Mass Effect. And the only Zelda which deserves to be on that list is Ocarina of Time.

What about Skyrim? For me Bethesda and Bioware games are the best existing games ever made.

Just thought of another I wish was on that list. Roller Coaster Tycoon. What a fun game that was. I played it a lot as a kid. I never managed to build a coaster my guests enjoyed. I made them look really cool, but they were too scary.

There are only 5 games in history worth talking about as far as I'm concerned. These were all masterpieces which, subject to the technical limitations of their time, could not be improved in any way.

1) Elite
2) Half-Life
3) Civilization II
4) Flashback
5) F19 Stealth Fighter

I'd add an honorable mention to Red Dead Redemption. Not so far ahead of its peers, but just a perfect game, especially after the disappointment of GTA San Andreas.

The folks one the Atari Age forums already ripped this one to shreds. The fact that it came from G4 is part of the problem, the other is that it is too US-centric and too Nintendo-centric. Most were pissed about the lack of Star Raiders on that list.

Hate to say it but FS is a boring game of clicking buttons and watching gauges slowly change. I played the hell out of many versions of FS over the years, but I wouldn't place it in a top 100 list.

Quoting flymia (Reply 6):

The lack of a Sim City and the fact that the original Sims ranks so low was the first red flag.

And the lack of driving/racing games in this least. No Gran Turismo 2 or 3 was a huge red flag. Not to mention all the really good arcade racers.

Deus Ex (original) at 53 is just shameful. Game is a masterpiece, deserves the top ten. Half-Life 2 also deserves a mention.

Agreed. Sim City was fun but limited, and Sim City 2000 fixed everything that was wrong with the original.

I also take issue with the fact that no games from the Myst franchise were on the list. Like it or not, the original Myst was the best-selling computer game of all time until The Sims was released. The second installment in the Myst series, Riven, got much better reviews than the original but didn't sell as well.

I'm sorry but Pong as number 100? The game that started it all? It should be above 20 at least, thats like naming the top 100 cars and putting the Model T as 100.

So many on the list are second, third and higher generations of the same game.

Saddened that Joust or Tempest didnt make the list.

For coin operated I vote for Space invaders or Pacman as #1

Consoles I vote for PONG as # 1

Hand held I vote for Tetris, with those stupid LED football games from the 70's a close second(burned a few up myself).

Computer software I vote for FS.

38. Super Metroid

Darn Tootin' again.

Some I think they should have put in are the Warcraft RTS games, Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest, Final Fanstasy 2, and the original Donkey Kong Country. In terms of a fighting game I would have added in Killer Instinct 2 and they missed NHL 94

3 is easier to beat but if you go through worlds 1-8 without warping its a test of patience with some pretty tough levels as you get to world 6 and beyond.

Also if you think one is hard try the lost levels (the Japanese SMB 2), I haven't beaten that to this date and am saved on 8-4.

Is there anywhere to get the updated NES system or a 3rd party one that will play the games?? I would like to be able to play NES games reliably still and think my original one is fried  .

But finding working old hardware is easy. The cartridge based systems are pretty robust and seem to last a long time. I'd try and find if there is a retro gaming store near you. They are usually well stocked with Nintendo stuff.

It's not that. Flight Simulator was one of the early computer games that made computers more than just work tools. And I can't think of any games offhand that set out to model large areas accurately. I would say that Grand Theft Auto and most other open world games owe something to MSFS.

Unfortunately I think your knowledge of computer gaming is fairly lacking. All of the major consumer oriented 8-bit computers (Apple II, Commodore Vic-20, C-64, Atari 8-bit line, TI-99, MSX, Tandy Color Computer, Sinclair ZX Spectrum, etc....) all had fairly extensive libraries of games out of the box. Especially given that most of these computers had fairly capable graphics and sound hardware for the time. Arguably with the Atari 8-bit line and Commodore 64 being standouts.

Now the IBM PC and PC clones were fairly souless and did not initially lend themselves to gaming. But it wasn't till later in the 80s that PCs really took over the consumer market. And the games followed for that platform.

I'll give you your second point. But if you've ever played earlier versions of FS you'll know beyond a few wire frame polygons and some black and blue lines on the ground the world was fairly simplistic. I've spent more hours than I can remember playing flight simulator over the years so I am not bashing it. But I don't think it is hard to argue that it is really too much of a niche game to make it to the top 100.

The NES design is the issue because how you had to insert the cartridges by pressing them down compressed the contacts over time. Nintendo released an updated NES that made it top loading like the SNES to avoid the contact issue.

That is the one I will try and find.
