Recently I've been listening to the Beatles, and was wondering what some of your favourite songs are?

Some of my favs are "Yesterday" and "Help".

I'm NOT a Beatles fan; that is, I'm not at all "big" on a couple of the members; in spite of my negative views on these two individuals, I do listen to a tiny fraction of their music on occasion; overall, they made only two songs that have made it to my iPod list; "OB-LA-DI, OB-LA-DA", and "The Octopus's Garden". The first one I sometimes put my iPod on "repeat" and listen to it for half an hour or so.

All of them are faves! All four members were very different talents and the vast variety of melodies and musical contructions were phenomenal, as was the way they evolved in a relatively short time - admittedly with the help of banned substances and experiences in their lives. I often reflect what could have been had they stuck it out like the Stones.

Some of my top faves have to be Hey Jude, Let It Be, Dont Let Me Down, Ive Got A Feeling & Here Comes The Sun.

I divide the Beatles into three phases:

I. Early-From their beginnings as Quarrymen, Pete Best, Tony Sheridan, Hamburg and early era in the USA roughly through their Shay Stadium concert in August, 1965

II. Fab 4 Enlightenment Period: Revolver through Magical Mystery Tour peaking with Sgt. Peppers.

III. Final Days/Twilight: Loopy White Album to their break up in 1971.

Personally my favorite periods are the early and the Enlightenment eras. However there are some songs I like from their Twilight Era.

Songs I like in no particular order:

Early
Ain't She Sweet
Twist and Shout
My Bonnie (Tony Sheridan)
Basically I liked 99% of the early Beatles music.

Roll Over Beethoven and I Saw Her Standing There were not my favorites. They got overplayed. And with the latter song when they sang "mine" it sounded like "Hawaii."

Middle or "Enlightenment Period"

Tomorrow Never Knows
Sgt. Pepper opening and closing including the seg way into A Little Help From My Friends
Lovely Rita Meter Maid
She's Fixin A Hole
I Am The Walrus
Strawberry Fields
Baby You're a Rich Man
Magical Mystery Tour
Blue Jay Way
Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds (reminded me of Lucille Ball if she did an acid trip) (I even liked the knockoff version by Elton John!

Final Era:
While My Guitar Gently Weeps
It Ain't Easy
Goodnight
The Long and Winding Road
Let It Be
Something

There are many more I really liked from their entire run I just am having a brain fart.

Not to be negative but the final Beatle's Era had some of their worst material (my opinion) In no order
Rocky Raccoon
Oob La Dede Oob Le Da
Get Back
Paperback Writer (overhyped, overplayed)
Michelle
Lady Madonna (overexposed/overplayed)
Happiness is a Warm Gun
Roll Over Beethoven
I Saw Her Standing There

There have been some that felt the White Album should have been one disc. I'm mixed on that however many of the stuff I disliked came off the White Album.

Even after they split up, overall they had great stuff as solo artists. With the exception of:
The No No Song, Ringo's cover of You're 16, Ebony and Ivory, Hell On Wheels

On a closing note: Paul McCartney's Uncle Albert Admiral Halsey got me back into music big time and I've never looked back!

My two favorites.

We are going to LAS next month and we will be seeing Cirque do Soliel:Love at Mirage. I am not a huge Beatles fan, but I like their music, so that should be fun. I saw a great version of "Across The Universe" by Fiona Apple on YouTube was great. The movie "Across The Universe" was great too.

I've grown up with their music, too, and while I'm not their biggest fan ever, I still love many of their titles.

I've seen all my favourites above, except for one:
One title that I like a lot but never heard outside of their movie Help!:
The Beatles-The Night Before

I've gravitated most towards the George Harrison side of the Beatles, including his later solo works. But they've all made their contributions.

The Beatles-The Night Before

As I said, there are many I've forgotten to mention and this one qualifies as one of my many Beatle's songs I like.

Regarding the White Album? Was a lot of the banal silly material such as Rocky Racoon, and Oobla Dee Oobla Da due to their drug usage and their time with the Maharagie in India? And, was it their arrogance now that they had their own label Apple Records? I felt the White Album was a letdown. Though there are a few great tracks on it but most of them were silly, banal and not the sound I cared for. Just my 2 cents!

Here are mine:

She Loves You
Help
I'm Down
Day Tripper
Elanor Rigby
Love You To
I'm only sleeping
Tomorrow Never Knows ("Turn off your mind, relax, and float downstream" -- one of the best lines in any song, in my opinion. Plus, one of my all time favorite songs -- I hate the mono version tho)
Paperback Writer
Rain
Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds
Good Morning Good Morning
A Day in the Life
Blue Jay Way
I am the Walrus
Hello Goodbye
Strawberry Fields Forever
Penny Lane
Pretty much everything from the White Album and Abbey Road albums
Two of Us
Dig a Pony
Across the Universe (version from the Past Masters collection)
Don't Let Me Down
Get Back
I've Got a Feeling
Hey Jude
Revolution

My opinion of their Love album: It's basically one huge 78-minute vertuoso of all of their music from start to finish. My favorite 3-track combo is Strawberry Fields Forever-Tomorrow Never Knows/Within You Without You-Lucy in the sky with diamonds." I love how all those songs seg way into each other, especially from Within You Without You to Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.

Yep, I am a HUGE Beatles fan here! I did a rendition of Lucy in the sky with diamonds at a high school talent show my junior year, which coincided with the 20th anniversary of when Lennon got shot. I listen to them after work and sing along to the songs. Plus I have Magical Mystery Tour and Rubber Soul in my car...

Me neither. I tend to like covers by artist of another genre. That's why I tend to like the Brazilian/lounge bossa nova or easy listening covers of the Beatles.

Here is a cover of the Bee Gees doing A Day In The Life from that shipwreck of a movie released in 1978 - Sargent Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

That was the most rediculous thing I've ever seen in my life!!!

I'm referring to the 90-minutes of silly screen play/acting/ etc...

I love showing it to my friends who are diehard Beatles fans.
They hate it but shocked at the same time.

Who would have thought that movie would have been a disaster?
The producer Robert Stigwood had just released the very successful Saturday Night Fever a year before. Then you get the biggest names at the time to do a Beatles tribute. You've got the Bee Gees, Peter Frampton, Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, Earth Wind & Fire, Leif Garret and George Burns then through in Steve Martin, Wolfman Jack and Donald Pleasence.
What could POSSIBLY go wrong?!?!?!?!?!

That cover version of Got To Get You Into My Life?    That entire Bee Gee's fiasco is the stuff of bad dreams or would have made a great Twilight Zone episode.

And Tenesee Earnie Ford doing Let It Be. That must be so bad it's priceless. TEF will always be associated with the fantastic 16 Tons.

I have a copy of that movie on the RCA CED VideoDisc for the added WTF factor.
Imagine watching that movie with the occasional image skipping just like on a poorly maintained LP record.

It's a shame that movie ended a lot of careers.

Imgagine if the Simpsons did a remake of the drug trip addled movie Yellow Submarine! Or worse, the Archies!

The Hair movie did MUCH better than the Sgt. Peppers movie.
Honestly I do not like musicals of any sort - even rock musicals. I get more joy seeing the reaction of friends and Beatles fans when I show the movie to them. A good friend of mines likes to call me a music Sadist.
