Although it's only been 2 days since Les Miserables has been released, the overall reception and media accolades so far show that although the Academy nominations are over a month away, it looks the critically acclaimed musical has a solid grab on most nominations. (except for best Actor/Actress...)

Zero Dark Thirty will surely be a noise maker as well.

I heard that Anne Hathaway was a shoe in for that, in her role as Fantine.

I can't wait to see it; I've been waiting for it for over a year and I am going to see in with a friend of mine on the 15th Jan (for some reason, it's only released in the UK three weeks after the US - don't know why this is!)

I'm pretty sure The Hobbit will also make some waves, especially in the technical awards.

If Life of Pi doesn't get an Oscar, at the very least in a technical award, the Oscars have lost all meaning.

I think Lincoln is going to be the dark horse this Oscar season.

Hathaway will be campaigned for Best Supporting Actress.

The only role in Les Miserables which would compete for Best Actress would be Seyfried as Cosette - and I'm not seeing much about her being exceptional. Bonham-Carter might be a contender for Best Supporting Actress - but the producers seem to have focused their money and publicity on Hathaway.

I also don't know who would be campaigned by the company for Best Supporting Actor. Crowe is solid as usual, but not exceptional probably because of his less than stellar singing. Cohen is a parody.

Although it's only been 2 days since Les Miserables has been released,

The advanced showings for critics were a few weeks ago. Also the DVD copies for members of the Academy to review went out about the first of December. There have also been several special screenings in Hollywood for Academy members to attend earlier this month.

That's why we hear so much about a just released movie. It's already well known and viewed by the folks doing the publicity and voting.

although the Academy nominations are over a month away,

The votes for the nominations are made in December for the various catagories. Wikipedia has a good article on how the process works.

Quote:
In late December ballots and copies of the Reminder List of Eligible Releases are mailed to around 6000 active members.....

The members of the various branches nominate those in their respective fields, while all members may submit nominees for Best Picture. The winners are then determined by a second round of voting in which all members are then allowed to vote in most categories, including Best Picture.
