Guys,

I thought it would be nice to have a dedicated thread to talk about the off season events in the F1 galaxy.

I would like to start the thread by talking about a giant who is going to leave his role as President of Mercedes motorsport by the end of the year. Haug was part of Mercedes since 1990 and led the brand to an incredible amount of wins and titles in many categories across the planet. Here are some of his "stats" (from Autosport):

Quote:
1990 - The year in which Haug became Mercedes motorsport vice-president. He joined on October 1, just days before Jean-Louis Schlesser and Mauro Baldi clinched the World Sportscar title in a Mercedes C11

986 - Total number of races featuring a factory Mercedes presence during the Haug era. The three-pointed star won 439 of them, or 45 per cent if you prefer.

500 – Mercedes built an engine with the aim specifically to win the Indianapolis 500, and achieved it in 1994 with Penske and Al Unser Jr, breaking its Indycar series duck in the process. Eighteen more victories followed, with Unser and Greg Moore recording five of them each.

87 – Number of Formula 1 wins taken by Mercedes-powered cars during the Haug era. Mika Hakkinen took all 20 of his grand prix wins and his 1998-99 titles in McLaren-Mercedes. Lewis Hamilton in 2008 and Jenson Button in 2009 followed with McLaren and Brawn. The three-pointed star also powered cars to two constructors' titles.

19 – total number of DTM titles won, nine drivers' crowns courtesy of Klaus Ludwig, Bernd Schneider, Gary Paffett and Paul di Resta and 10 constructors' prizes.

13 – Drivers' titles won in major Formula 3 championships since Mercedes' engine programme began during the last decade. Jamie Green won the first in the Euro Series in 2004, while Lewis Hamilton, Paul di Resta, Nico Hulkenberg, Romain Grosjean and Jaime Alguersuari followed. A total of 189 major F3 wins have been scored, including 10 at the Masters and four at Macau.

10 – Mercedes won all 10 races of the 1998 FIA GT Championship; Ludwig and Ricardo Zonta taking the drivers' title ahead of '97 champion Bernd Schneider and Mark Webber.

2 – Championships won in the short-lived DTM successor, the ITC. Schneider again took the drivers' crown while a squad including Dario Franchitti.

1 – Number of grand prix wins gained by Mercedes as a constructor since returning to F1 in 2010. Nico Rosberg scored the victory at this year's Chinese Grand Prix.

Haug is leaving because the results of Mercedes GP over the last three years were not good enough.

Good luck to him in his next adventure

British GP2 driver Max Chilton, younger brother of British Touring Car driver Tom Chilton, has been given a full time race seat by Marussia in 2013:

http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/104867

I don't watch a lot of GP2, so I have no idea how talented or otherwise Chilton is, but good luck to him. Being stuck at the back of the grid isn't going to make it easy to impress other teams enough to get a better drive, but I hope he does well.

Me neither. I actually know more his brother Tom, whom I used to see racing when I was watching lots of BTCC back in the early 2000s.

I also learned yesterday that Kobayashi could not get a seat for next season (i.e. could not get enough money to buy a seat) and that he will try to come back in 2014.

So here is where we stand so far:

Red Bull
Sebastian Vettel
Mark Webber

Ferrari
Fernando Alonso
Felipe Massa

McLaren
Jenson Button
Sergio Perez

Lotus
Kimi Raikkonen
Romain Grosjean

Mercedes
Lewis Hamilton
Nico Rosberg

Sauber
Nico Hulkenberg
Esteban Gutierrez

Force India
Paul di Resta
Seat still available

Williams
Pastor Maldonado
Valtteri Bottas

Toro Rosso
Daniel Ricciardo
Jean-Eric Vergne

Caterham
Charles Pic
Seat still available

Marussia
Timo Glock
Max Chilton

Only two seats to get. Who has the biggest bank account at the moment?

Rumours/speculation in the German media are linking Sutil with the second Force India seat. I personally would have given Kovalainen another chance but perhaps Sutil is bringing in more Euros than the Finn...

Formula 1 cost a lot of money and some teams have more difficulties than others with their budget, so they hire drivers who are coming with big sponsors:

- Pastor Maldonado brought a substantial amount of money to Williams thanks to the national oil company of Venezuela, PDVSA.
- Bruno Senna brought something like 15 million euros thanks to the Brazilian oil company Eike Batista.
- Vitaly Petrov is backed by multiple Russian companies also brought 15 million euros to his team.
- Sergio Pérez has Telmex as a sponsor, etc.

I took those figures from this interesting article: http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2012...pastor-maldonado-f1-money-drivers.

And if you're good enough, like Alonso, you can start your career like that and end up being paid millions to drive a top-team car.

and from his good buddy Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez without whom he wouldn't be in his F1 seat at Williams.

PDVSA continues to hire only supporters of the president, and PDVSA revenue is used to fund political projects.

I am curious as to which Russian companies have financially supported Vitaly Petrov. Could be some shady business there too. These deals never get unveiled to the public.

Agreed, but he is right about Bernie's other failings.. races in places that should not have them just based on $$
I hate those races in desret hell holes with no fans, no atmosphere, at the expense of places where the people care and are passionate about the racing.

I think Bernie should go, he has achieved a lot but his day is done, we need someone who will capitalise on the merchandising and Brand... the income from effective merchandising would make the "traditional" races viable without the need to race where no gives a shit!!

The desert races, most the asian races .. have no place on the calendar,

Get back to the essence of Fi.. Bernie has to go for that to happen.

In that case it is not the driver paying though, but a sponsor. As far as I know there are no drivers paying out of own pockets to drive a F1 car at this moment, although you might consider Chilton, new driver for Marussia, as it's very likely his dad is paying for him.

Many guys wouldn't have a seat without those personal sponsors, but all those guys do need to have at least some speed (except maybe for the now defunct HRT). Maldonado is often the portrait for the ultimate sponsor driver, but he did win a race on merit and showed flashes of brilliance on other occasions.

Someone asked Alonso this year how it felt to be a pay driver (Santander being a sponsor of Ferrari and all). His answer was that he was not a pay driver, but rather a driver paid by both a team and a sponsor.

Second, I might have the chance to attend the Canadian GP this year, since there is no conflict with the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The only thing that will prevent me from going is the ticket price...

Graham Hill,

thanks for starting this thread, now I finally joined A-net I intend to post on F1 subjects once in a while.....I am a huge fan, I have been from the Prost days in 1993. Williams used to be my team but after Villeneuve things turned pear-shaped unfortunately. I was a fan of "your son" Damon, 1996.....a great season!

I have a question for the F1 community.........a so-called off season question:

What happens to the "old" cars of the teams?
Some of the bigger teams'models go to museums etc, I know.....I believe all Williams models are still on display in their factory for instance.
But what happens to all the other cars, the large majority......are the 2012 models recycled into the 2013 cars?

I believe Sebastian Vettel is the owner of his 2010, 2011 and 2012 championship car, is that correct?
Courtesy of a certain energy drink......

Thanks for any answers folks,

FH

Certainly Williams, McLaren and I guess others keep an example or two for their museums but complete cars very rarely "escape" the team these days. I know SV grows attached to his cars but as for having the championship cars, I am not sure.
Ferrari are opening a subsidiary here in Australia and part of that is the "loan" of one of Schuey''s Championship cars, it will look like the car and have some suspension and bodywork, it will not have an actual tub, engine or transmission.
There is a historic race in Australia that owns and races 2 x1985 Ferrari 156/85 Turbo F1 cars, as far as I know that is about the most recent F1 cars running in private hands.
There may be others in museums but few any later than that actually run, the shear amount of people, technology and logistics required to merely start a recent F1 engine is beyond most privateers much less the maint and running requirements.

As Stealthz said, some stay in the factories (displayed in the "internal" showroom of the factories, like in McLaren) or Ferrari), some go to museums, like the Donington one where you have the impressive McLaren Hall, some go to auction for people like you and me (with more money though!) so they can race them in historic events, etc.

However, I doubt that the cars are "recycled" for the following season.

I always found it interesting how crossing the finish line at the last race of the year turns the most technically advanced racing car into a heap of rubbish that can't be used competitively in any further events!

That said, I have personally seen prior year cars in the following settings:
- Museums - the Sinsheim museum in Germany had a few Ferrari, McLaren, Williams, and Sauber cars.
- Corporate showrooms - the McLaren dealership in Kensington (London), for instance, had a 2008 ex-Hamilton car hanging from a wall this past summer. Although not a showroom, the Ferrari store at the Beverly Center in Beverly Hills had what looked like a 2004-era car on display in 2007 or thereabouts.
- Car shows - my first ever sighting of an F1 car was at the New York Auto Show in 2000...back when Jaguar was racing as a constructor they had one of the 1999 Stewart cars painted in their green colours on display. More recently I've seen both Ferrari and Renault display their older F1 cars as part of their broader vehicle display at shows in Los Angeles and Frankfurt.

Finally, I have occasionally read of teams using last year's car for testing, sometimes using it only to evaluate new/young drivers or to evaluate components that would work in the same fashion in the new car.

Quoting sudden (Reply 20):

I agree with you. There seems to be a greater push by the larger teams (and sponsors) to polish the appearance of their drivers to the point that they become, by extension, PR representatives of the engine/car manufacturers or sponsors. This year both Vettel and Raikkonen gave us quite a few verbal outbursts that are nearly absent from most other drivers. It's like they are not even allowed to be humans with emotions anymore, just a clog in the machine that talks from time to time.

Schumi's battles with Hakkinen in particular was something special. Hakkinen was the only driver that Schumi really showed respect. He never pulled any stunts on him like we saw him do with Villeneuve. The famous going-right-in-a-left-corner

Looks like Mclaren will be first to launch their car on the 31st of January.

The key words are "looked like a 2004-era car" very few, if any of those "showroom" cars have very much of a real F1 car in them apart from some body panels and wheels.
Some teams use previous models for promo drives, Red Bull have raised this to something of an art form, many would have seen the Red Bull RB6 demo on a beach in the Caribbean, driving below the tide line, not much of that RB6 or Renault engine will be used again, similarly the demo at an unfinished and unpaved COTA.

As someone who will support Williams through thick and thin ... "used to be"??? I started watching F1 in 1994, saw Williams take three Constructors and two Drivers titles in the mid 1990s, and celebrated every time they took the top step on the podium in the early noughties. Now with Renault engines again, Williams are on their way back to the top where they belong. I have never supported and will never support any F1 team other than Williams.

Drivers come and go, but teams have more longevity. I remember the Hill and Villeneuve years like it was yesterday, and they were both my favourite drivers at some stage, as have other drivers who have never driven for Williams but who have impressed me with their amazing talent: Raikkonen, Hamilton and Vettel are among my favourites today. But while I have favourite drivers, the team comes first. Always.

Same for displaying retired aircraft by the way, although that is probably more expensive to clean and maintain.

But in 1998 I felt the car just got plain ugly, and they haven't improved it since. Combined with the regrettable colors the drivers have not inspired me, apart from Montoya perhaps. No look, non-inspiring drivers (Ralph, Barffff) and very few results! Sorry, it has tempered my enthusiasm. They managed to win 1 GP last year, with a Latindo driver even.....sorry, although I was happy for him....it did not light the Williams-fire......let's hope that will change.

He looks so nice on this picture

Music is a big part of Lewis Hamilton - but he doesn´t only listen to it, he also sticks into playing the guitar.
Both combined it helps him getting prepared for races. Here´s an intimate look behind the curtain of a Formula 1 World Champion.

He is no more a McLaren Vodafone driver so I wish him the best for his first season with the Mercedes Petronas team.

We have car auctions at my place of work. We've had a Ferrari of Schumacher, a BAR of Button and my favourite, a McLaren of Senna. The BAR didn't have an engine or gearbox, didn't ask about the other two, too busy dribbling.

Some of the bigger teams'models go to museums etc, I know.....I believe all Williams models are still on display in their factory for instance.
But what happens to all the other cars, the large majority......are the 2012 models recycled into the 2013 cars?

It would seem McLaren has a big warehouse of old cars.

Holy moses! That's really sweet. Hamilton looked touched by the fact that he was sitting in Senna's car. Who can blame him.
Those cars had little to none technical aid to assist the driver. Pure driving skills back then. Not to say the Hamilton or Jenson are bad drivers, but you get my point.

Ah yes, it was 1993 in a park near central Adelaide, a Friday morning in November... Nearby a young father and his son, of obvious Mediterranean heritage.. the first (and only) cars on the track, two scarlet cars in formation blasting down Brabham straight.. 24 cylinders beating the air into submission, echoing through the trees.
The youngster crying out that he didn't like the noise.. dad, responding in a deep latin accent I cannot attempt to do justice to.. "that is not noise.. that is music"
More than 40 years of motor racing behind me and that is one of the more enduring memories!!

It could be - probably some influence on Stefano for sure - but Pedro isn't just any driver. He has a history behind him as a F1 driver, and also as a test driver. He will be a good asset to Ferrari.

Alonso will have to go at some point. Pedro might end up being there much longer than him.

Other cars have been brought out of storage to be used as display vehicles in McLaren showrooms around the world. The also have a 911 in storage which was used as the development car for the TAG Porsche V6, that must be one hell of a scary 911.

2013 F1 season

Marussia have confirmed Timo Glock will not drive for them this year.

The team issued a statement saying the decision was reached “by mutual consent”.

Glock was originally contracted to drive for them during the 2013 season. Team principal John Booth indicated the team had to let him go to take on a paying driver:

Correct, but I don't see it as much of a setback. The FW35 will be launched on 19 February, so there's nearly a month between launch and first race.

Happens all the time, considering that McLaren send cars to show centers, demo events, wind tunnels, test tracks etc etc etc - plenty of movements to hide shipping a vehicle in.

Also consider that they aren't going to ship them with a big "McLaren Car Movers - You Cars Are In Safe Hands With Us" on the side, its going to be an unmarked truck. Mix that in with the movements of suppliers coming and going to the McLaren factory, and you have a wide window of opportunity...

Quoting TheSultanOfWing (Reply 59):
Nobody from the automotive press ever follows the movements around (to and from) the factory?

Which truck do they follow? Considering these sorts of shipments would only happen a few times a year at best, the sheer number of other shipments they can hide them in makes it difficult for anyone to follow the right vehicle.

Quoting TheSultanOfWing (Reply 59):
The municipality of wherever that warehouse is in the UK.....the local authorities, the firebrigade

The local authorities don't need to be notified of exactly what is being stored - they will know that its an automotive storage facility, but they won't have "former F1 cars stored here" written on any application. Bear in mind that there are loads of automotive storage facilities around, plenty of second hand cars stored in warehouses etc.

The fire brigade also won't know any more than the above, as its unlikely the cars would be stored with full tanks etc. Nothing immediately hazardous that requires you to inform the local emergency services of a possible issue.

The insurance company would know, but they have strict procedures around high value items so its unlikely to leak from there for obvious reasons.

Differences between paying driver and paid driver.

The price drivers pay to try and remain competitive
With the talents of Timo Glock and Heikki Kovalainen out for this upcoming season, the 'deserving driver' debate heats up.

January 23rd, 2013 (F1plus / Paul Godley).- Couple of days has pased since Timo Glock joined what appears to be an ever increasing list of quality drivers that are being pushed out of Formula 1's revolving door because of seemingly one thing; money. Both Glock and Heikki Kovalainen, formally of Caterham, were paid drivers as opposed to paying drivers. With their respective teams, Marussia and Caterham, battling over 10th place in the Constructors championship, you'd think that talent may just edge money given the significant prize on offer for finishing inside the top 10.

Hardly relevant, the car that is "launched" rarely bares more than a passing similarity to the car that makes it to race day(or even testing), they often have more in common with the "shopping mall/motor show" mock ups.

In years past teams have been known to launch "last years" car with new sponsor livery.

How often do you think McLaren sends a car to storage? Three, four times a year, perhaps. Besides, they're far more likely to call on a specialized car transporter using a fully enclosed, somewhat anonymous trailer. Follow one and you may indeed find McLaren's secret lair, or you may end up at a high-security warehouse at LHR where an MP4-12C is being dropped off on its way to a customer in the Middle East.

Team branded car transporters are for race cars and the equipment that comes with them, not to move a former race car that isn't going to be started from one location to another.

I'm sure most journalists have better things to do than sit outside of MTC waiting for trucks to come out. The road past MTC is actually pretty busy (I know I ran across it once to get my photo taken with the big McLaren sign out front). So waiting for a truck to come out isn't really practical. And with all the construction of MPC that was going on lately there were plenty of trucks coming and going.

My guess is that the cars are stored at the Woking Business Park where the McLaren factory was located before moving to MTC and where McLaren is still a major tennant.

Ross Brawn on the outer at Mercedes??

More and more coverage appearing about the possible replacement of Ross Brawn by McLaren's Paddy Lowe.

Not sure how that can be good for the team at least in the short term, I agree RB has not had the success he anticipated(and likely sold) since Mercedes bought the team. I would expect Lowe would have to sit out the usual "gardeing leave" before joining Merc and would RB hang around for that period... not sure A/ If he would(don't think he needs the money) and B/ if he did how effective would he be??

Maybe there is more afoot at Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1, the arrival of Toto Wolff as CEO (And shareholder) might be the beginning of Daimler distancing itself from F1 although doing this without losing a lot of corporate face will be a challenge.

I am a firm believer that a Formula 1 team is a strange beast and one not easily tamed by corporate board rooms, Mercedes F1 is a classic example.. as Honda F1 their performance was lacklustre, Brawn & Fry took over and decisions were made in the workshop and pit garage, results speak for themselves. Mercedes takes over, whether it is a protracted and cumbersome corporate decision process or just having to attend meetings and presentations, the focus seems drift away from the actual business of racing.

Not sure this bodes well for Hamilton's change of team.

Yes he did and he does have a degree of talent but a team desperate for funds will favour $$$ over talent, it is sad but it has always been thus!

Maybe there is more afoot at Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1, the arrival of Toto Wolff as CEO (And shareholder) might be the beginning of Daimler distancing itself from F1 although doing this without losing a lot of corporate face will be a challenge.

Also that an incon, Mr Haug left, indicates that you might be on to something.

The boards of manufacturers don't seem to get that F1 teams are best given their pot of money each year and left alone to run themselves. Mercedes problem is they keep recruiting managers. I can't see what Paddy Lowe could do that Ross Brawn can't. Though, I'm not sure what it is that Nick Fry does these days.

Glock wasn’t the only former F1 driver to take part in a DTM test this week. Robert Kubica returned to the track, two years after his horrific rally crash that almost saw the Polish driver lose his life.

Happens all the time, considering that McLaren send cars to show centers, demo events, wind tunnels, test tracks etc etc etc - plenty of movements to hide shipping a vehicle in.

Fair enough......point taken.

Quoting moo (Reply 62):
Also consider that they aren't going to ship them with a big "McLaren Car Movers - You Cars Are In Safe Hands With Us" on the side, its going to be an unmarked truck.

Yes, I gathered that much.

And what about the truck drivers, forklift operators, cleaners, security personnel etc etc.

Those are under threat of having their jobs taken from them

That argument I don't buy so much. Surely some people are unhappy about their job, perhaps they quit or they were sacked and still hold a grudge.
What about people bragging in the pub after a few tootsies........

Quoting blueflyer (Reply 68):

How often do you think McLaren sends a car to storage? Three, four times a year, perhaps. Besides, they're far more likely to call on a specialized car transporter using a fully enclosed, somewhat anonymous trailer. Follow one and you may indeed find McLaren's secret lair, or you may end up at a high-security warehouse at LHR where an MP4-12C is being dropped off on its way to a customer in the Middle East.

Fair enough......I guess I had underestimated the amount of trucks leaving the McLaren Mercedes factory.

Quoting Bill142 (Reply 71):

My guess is that the cars are stored at the Woking Business Park where the McLaren factory was located before moving to MTC and where McLaren is still a major tennant.

Good guess, as good as any......surely that can be confirmed by a larger entity if they put their mind to it?
Blindfolding journalists? Strange practice....
Why not keep it in a highly secure building, full stop? Why all the secrecy surrounding this, no doubt; highly secure building?

Just curious people, not trying to be facetious! I loved that video and it kind of got me thinking about what an amount of history is stored on these "shelves". I have been to some famous museums during my trips overseas, but that warehouse would beat the Louvre, Prado or Tate Modern any day of the week in my books!

Cheers,

FH

I am not sure what "get it over it already" means, but I assume you dislike my questions on how you keep a location like that secret. Here I was thinking that this was a thread on discussing F1 in the off season, and that the topic of moving cars to and from storage would qualify for such a thread.
There's 2 ways we can solve this Robbie:

1) From now on I will have every post pre-screened by you.

Or:

2) I keep posting relevant stuff in the A-net threads, and you learn to read past posts that are not interesting to you, and just reply to the stuff that tickles your fancy.

I got some interesting answers above, in fact I learned some things from others....and thus I am strongly considering posting stuff with or without your approval.
Yes, I propose solution #2 for you.

Have a great day!

Apparently, the teams agreed that they would try to cover that ugly nose with a modesty panel, but the guys at Enstone said that it was adding few extra grams and that for the moment it was not worth it. If it gives more downforce to the car, they will add one, though. We'll have to wait for the winter tests.

HRT to live again as Scorpion Racing emerge?
The Spanish team folded at the end of 2012, but there are positive signs -or speculation- of a possible assets takeover.

January 29th, 2013 (F1plus / Matt Somerfield).- Autosport today have ran a story regarding an entity called Scorpion Racing looking to buy the remains of the HRT team. Looking back through the 3 years the team had spent in F1, HRT epitomized an F1 backmarker's story more or less there to make up the numbers, however unlike the teams taking up this role before them they survived much longer than their predecessors.

February 3rd, 2013 (F1plus Team).- The Milton-Keynes based team of Red Bull Racing used You ube this Sunday afternoon to reveal to the world of racing its 2013 Formula 1 season car, the RB9.

Similarities with Lotus go beyond relying on YouTube to spread the word, but by neglecting the use of the “vanity panel” to cover the stepped nose.

Both drivers, Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel, were present to lift the car cover with which they aim to bring a four championship for the team.

Back to what matters, Mark Webber says RedBull is in better shape than this time last year.. must send a shiver up the spine of most other teams ,,, Christian Horner says "No car will dominate"... guess what we see on November 24 wil be somewhere between those views.
Whilst not a huge fan .. tend to think there will be an Infiniti emblazoned sidepod on the WCC(and likely WDC) car at Interlagos in November

McLaren news
Whitmarsh concerned by pay drivers

Martin Whitmarsh has warned that there are too many pay drivers in Formula One at the moment and that drivers remaining in junior categories for long periods of time are clogging up the system.

A number of teams have employed drivers with financial backing behind them as budgets remain tight towards the back of the grid. Whitmarsh believes the current situation means there are drivers coming in to the sport who are not up to the job, while more talented but less well funded drivers miss out.

The Insanely Complicated F1 Steering Wheel

A modern F1 car is the most technologically sophisticated race car on the planet, so naturally it’s got an equally complex steering wheel that jammed with enough switches and dials to make an airline pilot cross-eyed. Here’s a breakdown of the controls F1 drivers constantly adjust—while battling other cars at 200 mph.

It's not and hasn't been for a while, WRC cars are far more high tech, the previous generation of DTM cars were also more advanced, F1 cars are (aero apart) not as complex as you think. I'd also say an LMP1 car would have it all over any F1 car when it comes to technical sophistication.

Williams and Caterham exhaust designs deemed 'illegal'

Williams and Caterham have been told by Formula 1's governing body, the FIA, that it considers the exhaust designs on their cars to be illegal.
The two teams have added extra bodywork rear of the exhaust to help enhance the way the gases work for aerodynamic effect, a key F1 technology.
But the FIA has told both teams it believes the designs contravene the rules governing bodywork in that area.

"Believes" is the key word there. An Autosport article on the same subject says that the teams can indeed run this design into the first race. If the FIA still believes it is illegal they will refer the matter to the stewards:

http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/105623

Quote:
Despite the FIA's concerns, its current position is only advisory and both teams can continue to run their designs during testing, which is unregulated beyond safety standards.

Should they continue to run them once the season starts, the FIA is able to refer the matter to race stewards for consideration.

When contacted about the situation, a spokesperson told AUTOSPORT: "The team spoke with the FIA this morning (they approached us), which is when they gave us their view.

"The team are now seeking further clarification on this and a decision as to whether this design will be carried forward will be made before the first race."

Alonso fastest in thrusday morning testing
Hulkenberg followed with second best time in a cool morning.

BARCELONA, Spain, Feb 21, 2013 (AFP) - Former world champion Fernando Alonso went fastest in Thursday morning's session at Barcelona's Catalunya circuit on the third day of testing before the start of the new Formula One season.
Once again the conditions were not the best early in the session as temperatures were on the cool zone. it took few hours for the track to become a reliable source of data.

I think we finally have an answer to the question:

Who is faster, Lewis Hamilton or Sebastian Vettel.

Both drove the Suzuki Liana on the exact same track in same conditions on Top Gear.

Lewis Hamilton was a second faster.

Brilliant.

Didn't drive on the same day so it means nothing, that said I think Buttons lap in the snow was very impressive, only 0.9 seconds off Vettels time in the dry.

I'm sure that there are some touring car, WRC and sports car drivers who could punt the Liana around the track just as fast and any of the F1 drivers can, in fact I'd put big money on someone like Andy Priaulx, Timo Scheider or Seb Loeb being faster.

A dedicated young Formula 1 fan:

Kid builds his own cardboard Red Bull RB9
Check out a Japanese Red Bull Racing fan's home-made F1 car.

Not content with sitting watching the Formula One on the sofa, Japanese Red Bull Racing super-fan Ohana decided he wanted the full F1 experience and went about building a car he could sit in.
Last year the little Adrian Newey got to work on a Red Bull RB8 made from cardboard and this year he's gone and made the Red Bull RB9, that features details like the step-nose and some flashes of Infiniti purple.

Try to get as many drivers signed cards you can and remember to take your camera and get pictures for us!

I will not be seeing them until Monaco at the end of May where all the great F1 drivers past and present always meet every year.

I've just discovered the change in networks for F1 in France, from a free to air one to a paying one. I love F1 but not at 40%u20AC/month, I'd rather spend that attending a GP (something I hope to do this year to see/hear the last V8 engines).

I just read today that Montagny and Villeneuve will be the pundits.

As to why Canal + has won the battle against TF1, I guess it's because they had quite a lot of money to spare since they did not get the full football championship TV rights, contrary to the previous years.

But I agree it sucks for French viewers.

Not really on topic, but I've come across some 1978 pictures of the Gilles Villeneuve circuit, so I'd like to share them with you

On this aerial picture, we can see the hairpin located right after the current straight/finish line. But where is the straight/finish line and the pit stops, you would ask me? Well at that time, the pit stops were located on the opposite side of the circuit.

This is a shot of the hairpin's exit. Nowadays, the guardrail and the trees you see on the right is only a runoff area:

The Victoria Bridge you see on the foreground is the one I take on my daily commute. So every day, in the morning and the evening, I have a good overview of the track:

Security was not the main priority back then:

The chicane below does not exist anymore. It was located where is currently the long straight line leading to the pit stop entrance :

This picture is taken on the opposite side:

Those are the old pit stops. They were located after the hairpin, just before the long straight line leading to the current pit stop entrance. The bridge you see on the background is Jacques Cartier:

Wow, thank you for posting that! It's good to see how many circuits have changed over the years. I notice that the current start/finish straight wasn't really a "straight" back then, and the infamous "Wall of Champions" didn't exist.

Thank you!

Yes, it changed quite a lot in 35 years!

Here is a 1964 picture of the site. The Notre-Dame island, where the track is located, was barely there:

On this 1966 picture, the island is finished on time for the Expo 67. The island was built in ten months from 15 million tons of rock excavated for the construction of the city's subway. The F1 track will be built 10 years later.
