I just had a conversation with a friend concerning the outgoing month of June.
And we agreed that from a musical point of view it was simply great, at least in our area.
Actually, for me, it started back in May when Paul McCartney came to HAM and played a great concert. Although the sound was pretty bad (at least where I was sitting) and I had hoped for a bigger stage (-show) for my 90 Euros, it was a night that will live with me as long as I will. The setlist was the same as it´s on "Back In The World". (one exception - the Birthday song)
Then it was for local act Herbert Grönemeyer (some non-Germans might know him from his acting days when he starred in Das Boot) to rock the stadium on two days. Although I did not go there I heard every bit of the show since I do not live too far away from the stadium (nowadays called AOL Arena ).
Just one day later I went to "The Boss" Bruce Springsteen. And man what a great great gig that was!!! The E-Street Band is simply amazing! Although rain set in on "Empty Sky" (as to prove us wrong) the crowd went bonkers. I dare say the crowd was more energetic than it had been at Paul McCartney. The sound was also fantastic, and what a setlist:
01 Born in the USA (acoustic and kind of oriental style)
02 The Rising
03 Lonesome Day
04 Ties That Bind
05 Atlantic City
06 My Love Will Not Let You Down
07 Empty Sky
08 You're Missing
09 Waiting on a Sunny Day
10 You Can Look (But You Better Not Touch)
11 No Surrender
12 Worlds Apart
14 Out In The Street
15 Mary's Place
16 Downbound Train
17 Racing in the Street
18 Into the Fire
19 Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out
20 Hungry Heart (with Wolfgang Niedecken of German band BAP - I bet we were audible all over the city)
21 Bobby Jean
23 Born to Run
24 Seven Nights to Rock
25 My City of Ruins
26 Land of Hope and Dreams
27 Dancing in the Dark
Any questions left about that night??? 3 hours (!) of great entertainment!
Just 3 days later Eminem took the stage at the same venue. I wasn´t there as my budget wouldn´t allow me anything more and I do not really like him. But people told me it was also great.
In 2 weeks The Rolling Stones will close the stadium season here. I have already seen them in 1999, thankfully.
Also there have been many smaller concerts indoor and outdoor. Not to forget the large festivals Rock Am Ring / Rock Im Park and Hurricane / Southside Festivals.
So this has been one of the most rocking spring/early summer in Germany ever, wouldn´t you agree?
