I've never had any surgeries. I've had stitches in my forehead and my wisdom teeth removed, but that's pretty standard stuff.

Only one true surgery in my 50 years living. On Feb. 3rd, I had my Gall Bladder taken out. They used Laproscopic surgery, was 'same day' surgery, had only 4 small incisions for the tools, and back to work just over 2 weeks later. No problems since then. Problem with the Gall Bladder discovered when an ultrasound scan was done of the trunk of my body to diagnose other possible problem I had last summer, and along the way they noticed stones and other problems with my gall bladder.

I've had a few cysts removed, including one from my neck a few months ago. Also had a stye (sp?) that needed to be surgically removed a few years ago. All of these were simple outpatient procedures.

Would you count spinal taps as a surgery? I've had one, and they are brutal.

Oral surgery to pull my wisdom teeth...don't remember much about it, given the fact that I was quite doped up - they gave me laughing gas and a general anesthetic pre-op and then post-op I was given extra strength Motrin and Tylox. I was definitely not feeling ANY pain that day. The next day though...

Well lets see.....i got hit by a motorbike in 1988, so i went on the table to have my left ear (almost completely severed) sewn back on, the flesh under my chin was hanging down so that was sewn back in place and i had my right leg put in a splint (broke the femur). Had a small lump on my lower lip removed (due to the bike accident), I've have 2 'ops' under local anesthetic to remove 3 moles (2 on the neck, one on my arm) and i've had a few teeth pulled out when i was 7. Jan 2003 saw me back on the table to have a disc in my spine 'shaved' as it had ruptured causing pretty severe pain all the way down my right leg for 18 months (sciatica). That's it for now i believe and i hope there's not gonna be anything else. I've taken soooo many percocet (oxycodone) that i can hardly feel the effects anymore, oh and i'm only 24. lol

cheers

Being born with severe craniofacial deformities, I have had more surgeries than I can count. I was born with Treacher Collins syndrome (a rare genetic craniofacial deformity syndrome), where I had no chin, eyesockets, cheekbones, palate, outer ears, or ear canals. From the time I was born (1975) to 2003, I have had numerous reconstructive surgeries.

At James W. Riley Hospital for Children (Indianapolis), I had (from birth to age 3):
--Cleft palate repair at age 3
--Attempted opening of my ear canals (failed) at age 3
--Tracheostomies

At St. Louis Children's Hospital (St. Louis, MO) (from 1982-1991):
--Multiple tongue-flap palate repairs
--Multiple upper and lower jaw reconstructions requiring ICU time, tracheostomies, and wiring my mouth shut for months (and eating by syringe);
these used rib grafts, plates and screws
--Multiple outer-ear reconstructive procedures using rib, cartilage, and pelvic skin grafts
--Eyesocket and cheekbone reconstruction using ribs and wires (I lost my right eye that time)

In 1991 I returned to Riley Hospital for the remainder of my reconstructive surgeries through 1996:
--major lower-jaw advancement surgery in Dec. 1991, using rib grafts; this took over 14 hours straight! This laid me up for more than a week in hospital (including 2 days in ICU); they wired my mouth shut for 2 months (through Christmas, January, & February) on a syringe liquid diet and gave me a tracheostomy. At 14 hours, this one is my longest on record.
--July 1992-major upper-jaw reconstruction (mouth immobilised again)
--March 1993--combined surgery involving bioabsorbable facial implants and eye-muscle surgery
--April 1993--surgery to control infection stemming from implant rejection from March surgery; 18th birthday spent in hospital
--July 1994--lower jaw biopsy on suspicion of cancer (it was actually scar tissue from many previous surgeries & it looked suspicious during routine dental x-ray)
--July & Dec. 1995 & March & Aug. 1996--repeated surgeries for infection of facial implant sites; they finally removed one of them

Finally, in August 2003 in Indianapolis, I had my BAHA (Bone-Anchored Hearing Aid) surgically implanted (a little box snaps onto a screw in my mastoid bone behind my right ear) so I could have this new, state-of-the-art Swedish bone-vibrating hearing aid.

Recently I was able to obtain all the surgical and anaesthetic notes from my surgeries at both hospitals from 1975-1996. The stack is a THICK one!

2 recent brain surgeries to remove a TWO inch brain tumor
-----

In the early hours of December 14, 2004, I fell quite violently in front of the Luxor Hotel in Las Vegas (the big pyramid). I tore my slacks in the knee, scraped my hands, and hurt my head. I fell as a result of a combination of drinking and some idiot watering the yard. Sure enough, the sprinkler was getting more of the walkway than the grass.

Twenty four hours later, my head was still hurting. In the spirit of preventive medicine, I went to the emergency room. The ER Doctor (who bore a striking resemblance to former Continental Airlines CEO Gordon Bethune) on duty said, “Oh, you’re fine, let’s do a CAT scan just to make sure.” Some time later, he came back, sat down, and said, “I’ve got some bad news.”

Three days after Christmas, a team of neurosurgeons removed a two inch brain tumor from the right side of my cerebellum. I was informed it was there approximately 10 years. Three biopsies were conducted on the mass; two by the Nevada Neurosciences Center and one by the Mayo Clinic. The tests came back benign – whew!

I soon developed a complication with CSF (cerebral spinal fluid). On January 11 of this year, one of the neurosurgeons conducted a follow up operation on both my cranium and back. After a total of 27 days spent in the hospital, I was released for good on January 18. From what I understand, the cerebellum controls fine motor skills. As a side effect, I am having to relearn coordination and regain strength on my right side. With a noticeable gait, I now walk with a cane.

JR – the FlyingTexan – I’m back!

Response to Go3Team:

Yes, despite my Treacher Collins syndrome and the many surgeries I've had, I have been making an interesting life for myself.

I'm attending King's College London in order to go into the medical field--possibly as a researcher in the small but growing field of craniofacial deformities. Ever since the gene was found for my syndrome over 10 years ago here in England, I have been fascinated with how a little mutation in the gene can cause so much damage. I would like to find out what function the gene normally has in embryonic craniofacial skeletal development, and how the mutation causes the syndrome itself (ie, how the facial bones fail to develop in the embryo).

I also enjoy playing the piano. Two teachers had the patience and knowledge to teach me to play music despite my deafness. I also credit my faith in God, as well as my determination and the support of family and friends to help me through the surgeries as well as the often not-so-supportive social attitudes around me as I was growing up.

Thanks!

How ironic!

For me, I've had my wisdom teeth out, and some surgery at the age of 6. From what I understand, it was to drain some fluid. I remember being impressed with the dissolving stitches!

As for me, I had surgery for a gunshot wound to the stomach and leg from a AK-47 when I was in the Marine Corps deployed in Bosnia a few years back. My vest stopped the one that hit 2 inches from my heart. That hurt more than the actual gunshots did.

Yup, a big one, I went into emergency surgery a little while ago, I had an appendix burst, go 2 weeks without being treated (after it bursting) and was unnoticed until a CAT scan showed something very wrong. It spread abcesses throughout my abdominal cavity and infection throughout my body and I became septic doctors said I had 12-24 hours to live. I spent 3 months in the hospital and recovered slowly. Should've sued my doctor, oh well.

Also, I had another common procedure at birth.

It knocked me down, but not out. Me and 3 others were on patrol when we were ambushed. You have to understand the adrenline that flows through you during that time covers the pain you would feel, I did not know I had been shot in the right thigh and lower part of my stomach, I kept returning fire. The shots had come from the side that hit my leg and stomach, the stomach shot blew through one side and out the other, and into the shoulder of a fellow Marine (Joe Phillips) who was squatting to my left, as I turned to my right to return fire I was hit in the chest. I remember the extreme burning sensation in my chest after being hit there. I wanted to pull that vest off soooooo bad, but could not until we were out of danger. The others returned fire in that direction giving me time to crawl to a safer location, once there I returned fire and ended up hitting the (what has been confirmed 15 year old boy) with a fatal shot through the throat.

I still have the kevlar plate that saved my life as a memento so to speak.

What I find amazing though is these rap artist that brag about being shot, I can tell you from experience, there is nothing to brag about!!!

Few Dental surgeries, had a cyst in my neck when I was young that was surgically removed and in 4th grade I had my Spleen removed in emergency surgery. Missed 2 weeks of school for that one!

In that RX: Are those things that I see on your pelvis staples from the bondage or vascular clips?

Circumcision at 12? Are you F-ing nuts? That would be super painful.
And more importantly, why did they leave it so late?

I've had surgery for a 'sports hernia' and a couple oral surgeries. Nothing major.

Curlyheadboy -

Those clips are likely either holding surgical drapes or just sitting on top of the drapes; it's an in-surgery x-ray taken to make sure everything's in place before they close up the incision.

(I think.)

When I was 16 years old I had reconstructive upper thorasic surgury on T1-T6 with a fusion from bone that was cut out of my hip, this was to correct a severe scoliosis. 6 days after the initial surgury, a blod clot formed from pressure that was caused from the harrington rods that were put into my back to hold it and I woke up with paralysis from the waist down. A second series of operations were performed and I was put in a halo cast for 6 months.

I've had some work done...My parents decided on the first little physical alteration, a-hem. Then I had my tonsils out at a very young age. A few years back I was involved in an situation that required hundreds of stitches and staples followed by some evasive tests and even a chest tube!

Since then, I've considered having some work done to remove some scars, but my friends have all encouraged me not to do it.

Other than that, I've only had oral surgery, (fillings and root-canals), and I've just booked an appointment with a periodontist (yikes!).

I have a great deal of faith in Canadian medicine.
