Topic: What's Wrong With My Classic Tapestry Rug?

Here is one of the very few things that Jen and I argue about: this classic tapestry rug.

If she had her way, she'd tear it to ribbons and scatter it to the wind. She's made it very clear that she does not like it. She thinks it's eerie, ugly, and doesn't match anything.

This rug was given to me by one of my uncles. Besides the fact that I think it's a very classy rug with a nice color scheme, it has that masculine rustic/rural look to it. There is a lot of history to it. My uncle had it since before I was born, and I have memories associated with it dating back to my early childhood back to the limit of recollection.

So it's not going anywhere, as long as I have any kind of say. I'd like to keep it in our bedroom. Or even the den or living room. She says that if I am to keep it, I have to put it in the spare/stereo room.

Thoughts?

One question and two requests:

1. What makes you think it is 'classic'?

A. Please show us the label.

B. Please show us the stitching on the back.

Let the appraisals and evaluations begin.  Smile Smile

One and only one answer is needed....

It's ugly. Take it down and burn it.

My personal opinion: ugly as hell. I have enough deer walking around my yard and eating my plants (I actually see one right now out my window, the POS), I wouldn't want to see them in my house. I don't really like the colors, either. I would just put it in a spare room, make everyone happy. She doesn't have to look at it, you don't have to throw it away.

BTW Is the female deer looking at the male deer's ass? Big grin

Nah. You stated the sentimental value behind it so I would just store it in one of those special plastic bags that keep air out so you can have it for years to come....hidden from all humanity of course!  Wink

Matt... I know that rug must mean a lot to you. Let me make a suggestion: make the stereo room your personal "guy" retreat and make it clear that you get to decorate it any way you want. Then put the rug in there.

Those memories are lovely, really, and the rug does look as though a lot of work went into it. However... being a chick myself, I can see where it's probably a sticking point. And perhaps this isn't the hill you want to die on.

Hope you work something out you both can live with...

I suggest you put it in the spare room, and as Saxdiva says let it be your guy room, decorate it like you want to.

I wouldnt let that carpet be in the livingroom.  yuck

Okay, this can only be a joke, right? Big grin

She is obviously a smart woman with good taste.

That´s yes and yes and thank your lucky fate you´re not punished with anything actually matching it! Big grin

Cherish your good memories... but in the rug they ain´t!

Made-in-China candy colors? Most certainly! Big grin

Quoting Matt D (Thread starter):

No, it doesn´t. It looks like a totally cliché elderly german couple, watching TV in their living room, with all the furniture left over from the 1950s (and having been inconsolably ugly even back then).

Quoting Matt D (Thread starter):
There is a lot of history to it. My uncle had it since before I was born, and I have memories associated with it dating back to my early childhood back to the limit of recollection.

If that is so, good for you - but nobody else will think of those memories when he or (more importantly) she has to look at it.

That is beyond reasonable... She must really love you!  bigthumbsup

Yeah, it is an ugly rug. I think you should compromise with Jen. She should let you keep it and you agree to put it in the den/stereo room.
Being a female I completely understand Jen's point of view. This is what we do at our house also. The main house is up to me as far as decoration goes.
Anything that Omar wants to display goes in the den/computer room/office/electronics room. This is also where all the flying stuff goes. I love my Gemini/Dragon Wings models to death but I dont want them in the living room. There for we installed shelves in the computer room and now they are on display.
This seems like a fair compromise to me. You dont have to chuck it and you can hang it up but still make Jen happy. Relationships seem to be about compromise. You gotta do it to keep the peace. That rug may not appeal to Jens interior decorating side but it is very important to you!

Matt, is that the TV sitting right below the rug? If Jen has to look at that while watching TV, she's an extremely patient person.

Maybe use the rug as some sort of bargaining chip. Obviously its important to you because it was given to you by your uncle, and she knows that.

Tell her you will take it down conditionally. Work out a comprimise that you will get something better in return for taking it down.

I'm trying to think of a place where this rug would look..half decent I guess. Perhaps a photography dark-room. You do love photography, don't you?

That deer looks like Richard Simmons with a greasy hard-on. God, that's disgusting. If you want to perpetuate an atmosphere of disgusting flamboyance, keep it. Otherwise, take it out to the pacific coast highway, place it ceremoniously in a stolen car of your own choice, and steer it off a cliff. Make sure everything burns. God, you give me shit for being a socialist. You're totally fucked, Matt.

A velvet painting of Elvis would be the only thing MORE tacky than that.

If you can find your own personal space, hang it there. Otherwise, get rid of that thing.

I'd rather watch Jcs slobber up the grease from the bottom of the empty Pizza Hut lunch buffet pans than look at that debacle for another second.

Don't be taking chops at the dogs playing poker. I already have one and am fixin' to frame it and display that as well. Classic great stuff.

That is so kitsch but there is something missing.....the nodding dog on top of the TV and the 3 flying ducks on the wall.....
