Question About DirectX 9 Compatibility

Evening all,

Quick question about compatibility with DirectX 9 - I can't find anywhere on the net that answers it, and I'm not a member of any IT message boards so you lot will have to do! :-p

Basically, a if a computer has an integrated graphics chip that's compliant only to DirectX 8.1 and not 9.0, what implications does this have for running DirectX 9 applications? Can you still install the DirectX 9 software, even though the card is not DX9 compliant?

And, once the DX9 software is installed (assuming it can be), will applications such as Flight Sim 2004, which specify a requirement for DX9 on the box, still run even though the hardware only goes as far as 8.1? Will there be a noticeable performance difference, or will they simply refuse to run?

Thanks in advance for your help!
Cheers
