Hi,
I'm traveling with a friend in the end of December to Australia and Thailand. During new years we will be in Sydney. Any ideas what should we do? Where to go?
Every year I always see on TV the fireworks over the Sydney bridge. I guess that's an option. What about club/parties? Any recommendations?

Heh - there is so much to do. Aside from NYC - Sydney is party central on New Years.
The harbour is an option - there are many places you can plant yourself for a good view of the fireworks - however it usually requires you getting there many hours before the event, deck-chair in tow etc. The best vantage point is the foreshore of the suburb of Kirribilli, which is directly on the northern side of the harbour bridge. From there you see the Opera house, Bridge, city - the whole thing.
If sitting in the same spot for hours doesn't interest you there are cool events that happen ever hour from about 2pm until midnight in the city centre. You can just wander - it's really safe and there are so many clubs, bars, concerts, things to do - everywhere. One cool event though is at this amusement park (Luna Park) on the northern end of the harbour bridge (opposite to Kirribilli). This is like a big clubbing event with free rides and an unbelievable view of the harbour bridge. Check it out here: http://www.harbourparty.com/. You have to buy tickets fairly quickly though.

Try and avoid Circular Quay in the evening! It will be chock full of people and it will be more stressful than enjoyable. I remember standing by a bench with my dad and 6 or 7 guys holding the crowds back so they didnt crush people against the bench. Add to that alot of drunk people who didn't know what they were doing and trying to get past us and people breaking out into fights it wasn't a very pleasent experience.

The harbourside is simply crazy on NYE in Sydney. I remember finishing work and riding home over the Harbour Bridge last year at 2pm and all the good vantage points are already packed to the rafters ...
It's one big fantastic party though. Certainly is an excellent experience.
I haven't done NYE by the harbour for a couple of years now ... always was going on a family holiday on Jan 1 that involves leaving home at 5am ...

Yep, and most of it is booked out well in advance. Mind you, that's what the hoteliers have you believe. I remember 2 days before NYE last year there was suddenly a huge surplus of 5-star hotel rooms going for cheap ...
