HELEN ELIZABETH CLARK was born in Hamilton in 1950.
She attended Epsom Girls Grammar School in Auckland and then studied at Auckland University, and graduated with MA (Hons) in 1974.
Her MA and PhD thesis research was on rural political behaviour and representation.
She was a junior lecturer in political studies in Auckland from 1973-75, studied abroad on a University Grants Committee post-graduate scholarship in 1976, and then lectured in political studies at Auckland from 1977 until her election to Parliament in 1981.
In 1986 Helen Clark was awarded the annual Peace Prize of the Danish Peace Foundation for her work in promoting peace and disarmament.
Helen Clark likes to keep fit through regular visits to the gym and has a passion for hiking and cross-country skiing. In January 1999 she climbed Africa's highest peak, the 5895m Mt Kilimanjaro.
not sure if the above makes her 'qualified' or not - but I do , grudgingly , admire her , the woman has balls ( though some of her more antagonistic opponents would say that is a statement of physiological fact rather than a metaphor on her determination )
Moderation in all things ... including moderation ;-)

John Howard - 25th Australian Prime Minister.
He graduated with a Bachelor of Laws from Sydney University and is a former Solicitor to the state supreme court. Education aside, the man isn't fit to run a burger king.
The Governor General Maj. Gen. Michael Jeffery is a product of the Royal Military College. So he's well qualified to follow orders and organise a war - perfect for his role as Howard's lapdog and Commander in-Chief of the armed forces.
The Queen was educated privately throughout her life and has had little to no experience living, working, residing in my country - so she's about as in-touch and capable of serving in her role as her Prime Minister.

Academic achievements canNOT be equalled with "qualification" for a political office. The British Prime Minister John Major did NOT have much in that field and as far as I could see was at least as good as many others. Practical experience, personal intelligence, self-education and simple flair can prove to be better than academic titles.

I'm reading Albert Speer's "Inside the Third Reich" at the moment - and that sound remarkably similar to the position taken by Adolph Hitler. Not to draw any similarities between you and him ME AVN Fan - of course I would never do such a thing. But I just found it interesting that Hitler felt more comfortable around self-educated people such as himself, as opposed to trained specialists. It's probably the same for most leaders who lack an intellectual bent.

self-educated people = those with a broad ability to reason logically, self-starters.
trained specialists = those with the broad ability to learn from those with a broad ability to reason logically.
We should not elevate students beyond the teachers.

Some famous NON-academics who just were army-officers, but made history are Mustafa Kemal Pasha, the first President of the Turkish Republic, and Mohammed Anwar as-Sadat, the man who started the MidEastern peace-process. Another quite good politician without academic "credentials" is Abdel-Aziz Bouteflika, the President of Algeria, who in his teens joined the Algerian resistance-movement and then got propelled into politics.

Wonderful! I guess I can be the first one to post my comments on 'our' prime minister!
Quote on the Dutch prime minister from www.government.nl:
"Jan Pieter (known as Jan Peter) Balkenende was born in Kapelle on 7 May 1956.
After completing his secondary education he went on to the Free University of Amsterdam where he studied history (graduating in 1980) and Dutch law (graduating in 1982). He obtained his doctorate in law in 1992 with a thesis on government regulation and civil society organisations.
From 1982 to 1984 he was a legal affairs policy officer at the Netherlands Universities Council. He then served on the staff of the policy institute of the Christian Democratic Alliance (CDA) until 1998.
Dr Balkenende was a member of Amstelveen municipal council from 1982 to 1998, and leader of its CDA group from 1994. From 1993 to 2002 he was professor (part-time) of Christian social thought on society and economics at the Free University."
He really looks like Harry Potter don't you think? Well apart from his appearance, I do think he's rather bright but he hasn't got any vision. His administration destroyed a big part of the whole Dutch social system, and I also don't think they took the right way with their economy policy. But that's my personal opinion, I will not go into detail because that would be way offtopic!

From Wikipedia...
Quote..."The Right Honourable Paul Edgar Philippe Martin, PC, MP, BA, LLB (born August 28, 1938 in Windsor, Ontario) is the Prime Minister of Canada. He is the twenty-first prime minister, having succeeded Jean Chrétien on December 12, 2003. Martin is leader of the Liberal Party of Canada and was elected in his own right with a minority government on June 28, 2004 — the first minority government in twenty-four years. The Liberals won 135 of 308 seats in the Canadian House of Commons. They lost the confidence of the Commons on November 29, 2005, and face an election January 23, 2006."
"A businessman and politician, Paul Martin is from a well-connected Roman Catholic Canadian political family. His father, Paul Martin Sr., a Francophone of half Irish and half French descent, served thirty-three years as a member of the Canadian House of Commons and was a cabinet minister in four Liberal governments. His mother, Eleanor "Nell" Adams, was of Scottish and Irish descent. Martin was raised in an English-speaking environment in Windsor and Ottawa. To give him the opportunity to improve his French, his parents enrolled him in a private French-language middle school, École Garneau in Ottawa, Ontario. He then briefly attended the University of Ottawa.
Martin graduated with a BA in history and philosophy from St. Michael's College, University of Toronto, in 1961. He followed his father's path to the University of Toronto Law School where he received his LL.B in 1965. He was called to the Ontario bar in 1966.
In 1965, Martin married Sheila Ann Cowan, and they have three sons, Paul, Jamie and David.
Before entering politics, Martin had a long career in the private sector. He served as:
Executive Assistant to Maurice Strong, President of Power Corporation
Vice-President, Power Corporation
Vice-President, Consolidated Bathurst Ltd. (A Power Co. subsidiary)
Vice-President, Planning and Development for Power Corporation
President and later Chief Executive Officer, CSL Group Inc.
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Canada Steamship Lines
Corporate Director for C.B. Pak Inc, Redpath Industries Ltd., Fednav Ltd., Manufacturers Life Insurance Co., Canadian Shipbuilding & Engineering Ltd. and Imasco Corp.
In July 1981, he was offered the opportunity to buy Canada Steamship Lines, then a Power Corporation subsidiary, in a risky leveraged buy out in partnership with acquaintance Lawrence Pathy. He calculated that they could afford the buy-out as long as interest rates, which were at an all-time high in Canada, did not continue to rise. The partners went for it, the largest leveraged buy-out in Canadian history, and the gamble paid off: within a few months rates began to fall - Martin was a confirmed millionaire. His declaration of assets upon entering Parliament included ownership of dozens of companies around the world, thirty-three ships, office buildings, apartment blocks and movie theatres. In 2004 Forbes.com estimated Martin's personal wealth at $225,000,000 (USD). Controversially, Canada Steamship Lines, the company he was obliged to dispose of upon assuming the office of Prime Minister, is known to employ flags of convenience on its ships, like most international shipping lines, in order to take advantage of lower off-shore tax rates."

That's an interesting book. Speer always was the most fascinating of the Nazi hierarchy because of his intelligence and ambivalence. But if you are reading that, I would strongly recommend you also read Gita Sereny's biography of him. It's outstanding, easily the best work on the subject because she knew him so well, yet wasn't afraid to point up Speer's hypocrisy, refusal to face reality and guilt.
