Its kind of a coincidence that both the countries I was born in and the one I spent most of my life in have rather funny shapes... by that i'm talking about Switzerland and Costa Rica's seahorse shape!

any other country or state you would qualify as having an original funny shape

about Switzerland

what I found fascinating is the map you found for Switzerland. If you look around OUTside Switzerland you see "Deutsches Reich" which includes ELSASS, Savoie having been French since 1860, the Kingdom Sardinia-Piemonte, the "Lombardo-Venezianisches Königreich ", both Kingdoms "now" part of the Kingdom of Italia "Regno d'Italia". And some remark about changes in 1918. Looks as if it is a map of about 1919/20 !

Many states borders in the USA are based on Latitude and Longitude marks, hense some have very straight lines for them. Others are geography particulary due to rivers and other bodies of water.

Fairly relative to this thread, we were talking about license plates in the saloon last night (Tennessee used to have their plates shaped like the state's shape). This led to a discussion of most-recognizable USA "state shapes".

We concluded that Tennessee and Florida are probably the most easily recognised shapes. Runner-ups included Texas, California, Nevada, Alaska and Michigan. Not necessarily in that order, and not very scientific, but fun over a few beers. Regards...jack

You have to be a bit creative, but if you combine Mozambique, Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, Somalia, Ethiopia, Djibouti, and Eritrea, it looks sort of like some mutant mermaid gazing into the distance, with Somalia as the arm, and Djibouti as the eye.

In High School, for a Powder Puff football game (It's where girls play, for those of you who might not know) I got to design the half time show, for our marching band. I did a Tribute To Square States, and then had the lower left corner crunch inward to do Nebraska and the upper right do the same for Utah.
