What is your National Anthem? If it isn't in English, please translate it!
Mine is HATIKVA (The Hope), Israel
KOL OD BA LEVAV PENIMA
NEFESH YEHUDI HOMIAH
ULFATI MEZRACH KADIMA
IYAN LEZION TZOPFIA
OD LO AVDA TIKVATENU
HA TIKVA BAT SHNOT ALPAYIM
LEHIOT AM HOFSHI BE ERTZNU

LEHIOT AM HOFSHI BE ERTZNU

And in English...
So long as still within our breasts
The Jewish heart beats true,
So long as still towards the East,
To Zion, looks the Jew,
So long our hopes are not yet lost
Two thousand years we cherished them
To live in freedom in the land
Of Zion and Jerusalem.
To live in freedom in the land
Of Zion and Jerusalem.

The British National Anthem
God save our noble Queen
God save our Gracious Queen
God save the Queen
(da,da,da,da)
Send her victorious
Happy and glorious
God save our gracious Queen
God save the Queen
The English anthem is 'Land of Hope and Glory' but I have no idea what the words were.
I used to think the brain is the most fascinating part of my body. But, hey, who is telling me that?
Ouvriers, paysans, nous sommes
Le grand parti des travailleurs
La terre n'appartient qu'aux hommes
L'oisif ira loger ailleurs
Combien, de nos chairs se repaissent
Mais si les corbeaux, les vautours
Un de ces matins disparaissent
Le soleil brillera toujours.
The Internationale [variant words in square brackets]
Arise ye workers [starvelings] from your slumbers
Arise ye prisoners of want
For reason in revolt now thunders
And at last ends the age of cant.
Away with all your superstitions
Servile masses arise, arise
We'll change henceforth [forthwith] the old tradition [conditions]
And spurn the dust to win the prize.
So comrades, come rally
And the last fight let us face
The Internationale unites the human race.
So comrades, come rally
And the last fight let us face
The Internationale unites the human race.
No more deluded by reaction
On tyrants only we'll make war
The soldiers too will take strike action
They'll break ranks and fight no more
And if those cannibals keep trying
To sacrifice us to their pride
They soon shall hear the bullets flying
We'll shoot the generals on our own side.
No saviour from on high delivers
No faith have we in prince or peer
Our own right hand the chains must shiver
Chains of hatred, greed and fear
E'er the thieves will out with their booty [give up their booty]
And give to all a happier lot.
Each [those] at the forge must do their duty
And we'll strike while the iron is hot.

Slovenia's national anthem, Zdravljica (The Toast), was written in the early 19th century by France Presern, a well known Slovenian poet. Since the poem's its basic message is that of peace, I think it is particularly appropriate at this time of crisis. The seventh stanza, which is officially the only part of the poem recognized as the national anthem, is particularly optimistic. I dedicate this post to the victims of Tuesday's attack.
The vintage, friends, is over,
And here sweet wine makes, once again,
Sad eyes and hearts recover,
Puts fire into every vein.
Drowns dull care
Everywhere
And summons hope out of despair.
To whom with acclamation
And song shall we our first toast give?
God save our land and nation
And all Slovenes where'er they live,
Who own the same
Blood and name,
And who one glorious Mother claim.
Let thunder out of heaven
Strike down and smite our wanton foe!
Now, as it once had thriven,
May our dear realm in freedom grow.
May fall the last
Chains of the past
Which bind us still and hold us fast!
Let peace, glad conciliation,
Come back to us throughout the land!
Towards their destination
Let Slavs henceforth go hand-in-hand!
Thus again
Will honour reign
To justice pledged in our domain.
To you, our pride past measure,
Our girls! Your beauty, charm and grace!
There surely is no treasure
To equal maidens of such race.
Sons you'll bear,
Who will dare
Defy our foe no matter where.
Our hope now, our to-morrow -
The youths - we toast and toast with joy.
No poisonous blight or sorrow
Your love of homeland shall destroy.
With us indeed
You're called to heed
Its summons in this hour of need.
God's blessing on all nations,
Who long and work for that bright day,
When o'er earth's habitations
No war, no strife shall hold its sway;
Who long to see
That all men free
No more shall foes, but neighbours be.
At last to our reunion -
To us the toast! Let it resound,
Since in this gay communion
By thoughts of brotherhood we're bound
May joyful cheer
Ne'er disappear
From all good hearts now gathered here.
This is the original Slovene-language version. Those of you who speak other Slavic languages may recognize a few words:
Spet trte so rodile,
prijat'lji, vince nam sladko,
ki nam oživlja žile,
srce razjasni in oko,
ki utopi

Bog našo nam deželo,
Bog živi ves slovenski svet,
brate vse,

V sovražnike `z oblakov
rodu naj naš'ga trešči grom!
Prost, ko je bil očakov,
naprej naj bo Slovencev dom;
naj zdrobe
njih roke

Edinost, sreča, sprava
k nam naj nazaj se vrnejo!
Otrok, kar ima slava,,
vsi naj si v roke sežejo,

in z njo čast,
ko pred, spet naša bosta last!
Bog živi vas, Slovenke,
prelepe, žlahtne rožice!
Ni take je mladenke,
ko naše je krvi dekle;
naj sinov
zarod nov
iz vas bo strah sovražnikov!
Mladen'či, zdaj se pije
zdravljica vaša, vi naš up!
Ljubezni domačije
noben naj vam ne usmrti strup;
ker po nas

Žive naj vsi narodi
ki hrepene dočakat' dan,
da koder sonce hodi,
prepir iz sveta bo pregnan,
da rojak
prost bo vsak,
ne vrag, le sosed bo mejak!
Nazadnje še, prijat'lji,
kozarec zase vzdignimo,
ki smo zato se zbrat'li,
ker dobro v srcu mislimo.
Dokaj dni
naj živi
Bog, kar nas dobrih je ljudi!

The anthem of Jamaica is a prayer to God to give us wisdom, strength, guidance and protection. Most people who've heard it like it because there isn't any mention of war or violence.Regretably some Jamaicans don't pay much attention to the words of the anthem and have become selfish. But for the most part the majority of us are god fearing, loving people. This is reflected in the fact that Jamaica has the most churches per square mile than any other country on earth.

Frustrate their knavish tricks,

The Greek national anthem is taken from ELEFTHEROI POLIORKIMENOI (Free Seiged) by Dionysios Solomos. It was written during the siege of Messologi during the Greek Revolution of 1821.
English:
Se gnoriso apo tin kopsi
Tou spathiou tin tromeri,
Se gnorizo apo tin opsi
Pou me via metraei tin yi.
Ap' ta kokala vgalmeni
Ton Ellinon ta iera,
Kai san prota andriomeni,
Haire, o Haire, eleftheria. (x3)
Translation:
We knew thee of old,
Oh, divinely restored,
By the lights of thine eyes
And the light of thy Sword
From the graves of our slain
Shall thy valour prevail

O say can you see?
By the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hailed,
At the twilight's last gleaming.
Whose broad stripes and bright stars,
Through the perilous fight,
And the ramparts we watched,
Were so gallantly streaming.
And the rocket's red glare,
The bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night,
That our flag was still there.
O say does that star spangled banner yet wave?
O'er the land of the free,
And the home of the brave!

LAND OF MOUNTAINS LAND OF RIVERS
Land of mountains, land on the River,
Land of fields, land of spires,
Land of hammers, with a rich future,
You are the home of great sons,
A nation blessed by its sense of beauty,
Highly praised Austria, highly praised Austria.
Strongly fought for, fiercely contested,
You are in the centre of the Continent
Like a strong heart,
You have born since the earliest days
The burden of a high mission
Much tried Austria, much tried Austria.
Watch us striding free and believing,
With courage, into new eras,
Working cheerfully and full of hope,
In fraternal chorus let us take in unity
The oath of allegiance to you, our country,
Our much beloved Austria, our much beloved Austria
Regards from the heart of Europe!
P.S.: I also like the American, British and German.
And all the others as they are really impressing.

God Save the Queen is the natioal anthem of Britain but Jerusalem, a patriotic hymn for England is better!
And did those feet in ancient time,
Walk upon England's mountains green?
And was the holy lamb of God,
On England's pleasant pastures seen?
And did the countenance divine,
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here,
Among those dark satanic mills?
Bring me my bow of burning gold,
Bring me my arrows of desire!
Bring me my spear, oh clouds unfurl,
Bring me my chariot of fire!
I will not cease from mental fight,
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand.
'Til we have built Jerusalem,
In England's green and pleasant land.
Fantastic noble uplifting words and tune, always brings a lump to my throat when I hear it!

This song was used in a Monty Python show. It was sketch about buying a bed and was really funny.
Wasn't the song written by William Blake?
Btw, what is Germany's national Anthem today was national anthem of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire (19th cent). It was called "Gott erhalte Franz, den Kaiser" ("God save Franz, the emperor" would be the literal translation). The composer was Joseph Haydn. I forgot to mention that in my previous post.

Our home is girt by sea.
Our land abounds in Nature's gifts
Of beauty rich and rare;
In hist'ry's page, let ev'ry stage
Advance Australia fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing,
"Advance Australia Fair."
Beneath our radiant Southern Cross
We'll toil with hearts and hands;
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands;
For those who've come across the seas
We've boundless plains to share;
With courage let us all combine
To Advance Australia fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing,
"Advance Australia Fair."
and we are all left wondering .. is "girt" really a word?

All so new and short...
The Dutch anthem dates back to the Spanish occupation (so about 400 years, give or take a century, it lasted a while ) and over a dozen verses (though only two or three are usually used now).

Oh yeah, I guess you Dutch particularly love the very first line, you know, the part about "I am of German blood" . A propos blood, ever heard the Marseillaise, the French anthem? That is literally soaked in blood (as in "let´s water our fields with their dirty blood...")...
You know the anthem of Liechtenstein actually uses the same tune as the UK´s?

Eight Stars of Gold on a Field of Blue
Alaska's Flag what it means to you
The blue of the sea
And the evening sky
The mountains lakes and flowers near-by
The gold of the early sourdough's dreams
The precious gold of the hills and streams
The brilliant stars in the northern sky
The bear and the dipper shining high
The great northern star with it's steady light
Over land and sea, a beacon bright
Alaska's flag, Alaskans dear.
A simple flag for the last frontier.
Sorry I don't have the lyrics for the second half.

Land of the Pilgrims' Pride

Mine is:
"Kong Christian stod ved hoejen mast..."
I won't translate it for you, it is simply too embarrassing. It is one long praise of late king Christian IV (1592 - 1648), the man who did more damage to this country than any other person. And it praises all the stupid wars he faught and lost.
We have an alternative national anthem too. Its text is not offensive in any way, so we use that one at international sports events and such. Title is "Der er et yndigt land" (There is a beautiful country). The rest of the text is no big art, and more a geographical description of the country than a cultural beauty. But at least it is not offensive against neighbour countries!
It's a shame because we do have several songs which could have been really great anthems. My personal favourite would be "I Danmark er jeg foedt" by Hans Christian Andersen. But we will never agree upon a new, decent national anthem, it's simply not an issue.
