It looks like your monitor has been infected with a life-form based on a large, hydrocarbon ring...
Seriously, it looks more like a crack that you can't see from the outside, but which is disrupting photon emission or proper LCD diffusion, whatever type of monitor you're using.
Call tech support.

Hi guys.

>> Cadet57, that looks pretty serious! I'd take Redngold's advice and have a computer technician fix it before it ends up like this ..........

Make sure someone isn't having a laugh and changed your desktop background!

But is that a screenshot taken using the print screen key or is that a photo taken with a camera of the actual monitor? If it's a screen dump, chances are it's not your monitor as this would be a picture of what your computer is sending to your monitor.

Yeh thisd is true where is it from if its a screen shot and its like this then id say virus, backgrond or fu*ked up shader in Graphics card...

If its a photo then maybe monitor... but try a screenshot if it is.

This could be a secret "layer" (source:virus) that is applied over any file you set as your background.

Questions: What happens if you drag and dock the "start bar" to the right, left, or top edges of the screen? Does the fractal image move also? What about if you drag your destop icons to the right side....does the "crack" move to the now open left side? Just curious.

Not necessarily, its easy to make something appear on your screen which wont ever show up in a standard screenshot - DirectX overlays!

You use DirectX to overlay something directly in the graphic cards memory, and since screenshots are almost always done from the system memory where the display frame is created initially it wont show up.

This is why you get a black square sometimes when screenshoting Windows Media Player when its playing a movie, or some DVD players.

Yeh, as said above, I think somebody is messing with you! If it was the monitor itself, it would not be shown on a screenshot... Just check your wallpaper, and any unknown processes.
