Recently my buddies have shown me 2001: A Space Odyssey (the "Jupiter" scene) synchedwith Echoes by Pink Floyd.

And I also just witnessed Wizard of Oz synchedwith Dark Side of the Moon, also by Pink Floyd.

Has anyone done this?

Yes I was extremely high when I watched them. I'd be much too afraid to trip and watch it, as I might freak out.

Anyone tried either of the movies/songs?

I've seen the Wizard of Oz sync. It really is amazing how well they do match up. I have not tried the 2001 sync. Oh, and I was not high when I was watching it.

Can someone please explain to me what the 20 minute acid trip at the end of 2001 is all about?

I've seen 2010. It explains why HAL malfunctioned. It also offered some possibilities on what the Monolith was. What it did NOT explain was what the trip was that Dave went on, where he ended up, or why he kept changing form.

Don't see 2010.. It's much inferior to 2001! Big grin
Actually that happens a lot in science fiction. The questions are better than the answers provided to them in the sequels  Wink

The ending of 2001 has lots of details, and you could have a 1-week conversation about it.. Just to give you some ideas:
- The monoliths represent a superior intelligence. They are tools used to stimulate intelligence and evolution in other species... In this case, the human race (or the apes that would become the human race).
- The final part of the movie shows the encounter between the astronaut Dave Bowman and the third monolyth appearing in the film, and represents another step in "guided/supervised" evolution (just like the apes evolved to become human beings). When approaching the monolyth, the astronaut becomes aware of several other and different worlds and evolution paths (actually, he sees them.. notice the importance given to his eye).
- He then sees himself getting older, as he wanders through an "imitation" of a typical earthly residence. And he slowly detaches himself of material needs. Food and water are just needs of his body, and his body is merely a recipient for his intelligence. Is his body also a tool? What would be the next evolutionary step? A more efficient body? An intelligence without a body? The starchild is this next step, represented by that image of a giant foetus in space.

Again, this can get quite complex if properly discussed around a table with a few glasses of beer.  Smile
And, of course, religion might be involved, although I prefer to leave it out in this brief discussion. This ending fits very well the whole idea of the film (there's a lot more than what's written up there!)...

As to the pink floyd synch.. I've done it, with 2001 and with The Wizard of Oz.. The 2001 synch is by far the best (there are others besides the two cited in this thread..).

I have never heard about the 2001/Pink Floyd synch. How would I do that one? I have done the Wizard of Oz synch. I was completely sober but when it was over, I felt like I had an experience. It was brilliant!

Also, this was the best explination I have ever heard for the end of 2001. I have seen both 2001 and 2010 and read the book 2010, but I never understood any of it. Thank you for the explination.

GO CANUCKS!!

Thanks  bigthumbsup

For the synch: start playing the music "Echoes" when the screen goes black after the scene where Bowman shuts HAL down. This is when "Jupiter and beyond the infinite" starts (the last 23-25 minutes of the film).

Pink Floyd compilations might include a different/edited version of Echoes... I always used the original one, from the Meddle album. 23 minutes and something.

Never did the synch and would be very interested to try it out... I will rent the movies.

We are talking about two fine pieces of music here. Back then, my car CD player must have had the notes melted in its transistors by having played these 2 songs maybe around 800 hours..

I thought it was pretty good, though not in the same league as 2001, of course. I mainly liked the performances with Roy Scheider as Haywood Floyd and Helen Mirren as the prickly Soviet commander. She was terrific. Still, the film was panned for trying too hard to explain the mystery.

If you read the books, you get a better idea of what is going on. The best I can describe is that Bowman "evolved" in that scene into an intelligence far beyond our own.
