Just researched airfares on AI and Jet Airways and fares are Rhaaaaaaa.

Does anyone know alternatives to these carriers ? Is the train a sensible option ?

Pick a train: Edinburgh, Oban or Balloch?

It normally takes around 15-16 hours.

Use this: http://www.rajnationalexpress.in/ (there are numerous other bus services like this as well - but these guys are new, and are using a much better reservation system).

Or this:

http://www.irctc.co.in/

The train (non-aircon) can be much cheaper (Search for trains from CSTM and DR to MAO in Second Sitting or Sleeper class - fare from Rs. 174 or £2).

There's also a hydrofoil service, it's not as cheap as the bus but it's quicker. Can't remember the cost, but it would be cheaper than flying. It takes about eight hours. There's even live entertainment on board: we had a juggler, who's discs used to crash to the floor when the boat hit a wave. It was hilarious.

It leaves from the Ferry Wharf in Mumbai at 9am on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays and returns on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays at 9am.

There's an overnight train service which takes ten hours, and the bus no doubt takes longer. The only quicker way is by air. . . not the cheapest!
