My brother in law told me this joke at dinner last night. I thought I'd pass it along:

It seems the FAA have finally gotten round to investigating the status of Santa Claus' flight credentials after a couple of near misses last year and worries the sleigh isn't sending a proper transponder signal while in controlled airspace. An investigator contacted the North Pole to verify Santa's pilot's licence and was shocked to find he had none. "I've been doing this for years, young man, and I just thought I was being grandfathered in." Nevertheless, the investigator insisted that because of the rise in air traffic and the FAA's promised modernization of their control systems now years behind schedule Santa will now have to obtain a pilots' licence. After some haggling, Santa would be required to pass a medical and a flight test. A date was arranged in late October and Santa was told to bring the sleigh, reindeer and all.

Santa arrived at an airport fairly close to the Canadian boarder for convenience sake, passed his medical and was all ready for the flight test. The examiner approached the sleigh carrying a shotgun, put it in the sleigh beside him and asked Santa to go through his preflight checks. Naturally Santa was a little perplexed at the sight of the shotgun so he asked the examiner what it was for. The examiner simply replied, "We need to test your response to a catastrophic engine failure on takeoff."

Keep smiling,

Charles, SJ

Ridiculous! He has enough reindeer that losing one on takeoff is less of an issue than loss of an engine on a BUFF.

His real worry is the way he blatantly busts the crew rest rules - let's not bring this up though because we don't need riots by the children next year.

Don't believe what you hear from those Hallmark/Montgomery Ward fake reindeer either.

Well, I imagine the MTOW of Santa's sleigh to be pretty high...

Read this very carefully, I shall write this only once!

So, what would you guess to be the minimum number of reindeer needed for a safe takeoff?
