Monday Night Football - ABC Calls It Quits

Well, there are plenty of stories out there if you want to Google them. ABC will broadcast their final MNF game tonight after 35 seasons when the Patriots play the NJ Jets. MNF will be broadcast on ESPN next year, and for several years to come. One story indicates that NBC will re-join the NFL market by broadcasting the Sunday night game, which apparently ESPN agreed to jettison in favor of Monday night. As someone who refuses to pay for cable TV, I'll take it, although I'll have to deal with Madden on Sunday night.

As for Monday night, I'll just have to forget about football unless the Patriots are playing, in which case out local ABC affiliate will pick up the game (contractually, any Patriots away game must be shown in the home market, and any sold out home game must also be shown in the home market. It has nothing to do with ABC having had MNF, Boston's ABC has always shown ESPN Sunday night games locally).

"Next year's booth: Michaels and Joe Theismann, with Suzy Kolber and Michele Tafoya reporting from the sidelines. Madden moves to NBC's Sunday night telecast."

The end of an ERA. So, your thoughts?

Ugh...  Sad This guy needs to learn when to shut up, and just let us watch football.

My grandfather read the article in USA Today and was remembering the good ole days...Cossel, Meredith, and Gifford.  checkmark

Isn't ABC getting Sunday night football now? Who is hosting?

Doh!  Silly

Who is working the play-by-play for Madden's game? I remember Al Micheals doing it for him on MNF.

No idea, but I suspect it will be someone who is smarter than Madden. That certainly leaves the door open for...well, just about anyone in the world.

FX, I can't stand him either. I was at the PITT home opener this year against Notre Dame, and our seats are first row, behind the visitors bench. Of course, Thiesman is there, and I scream "HEY JOE!". He looks over and I scream "YOU SUCK!".

Priceless.

How about "classless" on your part?

It's one thing to dislike his announcing, as I do regarding Madden, but Theismann went to two superbowls, including one victory, was MVP in 1983, and was runner-up for the Heisman Trophy (losing to Jim Plunkett). I'm not sure that is deserving of having epithets screamed at him, but that's just me.

For one thing, ESPN better do away with that disgusting made-for-nascar travesty they call the highlights. That country bullsh!t makes me seriously question their loyalty to their viewers. Some podunk redneck yodeling horrible lyrics to an already awful song could turn someone off of MNF forever.

When they make decisions like that, they deserve to have the rights to the broadcast forceably removed.

I'm glad that NBC is back. I wonder if their deal with the NFL includes one or two super bowls. Any info about this guys?

Al Madden was part of CBS Sports, FOX Sports, ABC Sports and now NBC Sports... Quite impressive if you ask me.

I'm surprised that nobody has noticed that this is basically an internal ABC decision. ESPN and ABC are the same company. They've simply made the decision that the small number of viewers they will lose who were actually using over the air broadcasts will be more than made up for by the added market share ABC will get plus it will also keep them from disrupting their Monday schedule for half the year.

Joe Theisman was probably involved with one of the most memorable moments in MNF history. His leg was severely broken in a clean tackle by NY Giant Lawrence Taylor. One could swear you could hear the bones snapping on the audio in the replays. He never played again.
For a number of years, the ratings for MNF have been in a sharp decline. It also screws up the Monday Night schedule for ABC since they have to have other programming for most of the year. As MNF is shown during the fall when most new shows are brought on TV this also screws up ratings and programming. Since ESPN is under the same parent company (Disney) as the ABC network and now with great concentration throughout the country as to those whom would be most interested in the game, you have a viable alternative to keeping MNF on the ABC broadcast network. Perhaps bars in some locations will do better where some don't have cable or satellite services to get ESPN.

Back to football, I've spent many memorable evenings with MNF, and I'll miss the nostalgia of it having been on ABC Channel 5 in BOS.

MNF was never the same without Howard Cosell. His nasal Brooklyn accent, his demeanor, and his half-time highlights (the era before 24 hour sports) of the previous days games was the catalyst for the success of MNF.

Now, with 500 channels, video games, DVD's and video on demand, the TV universe has fractured and thus MNF has no where the ratings it had during its heyday in the 70's and 80's.

By the way, Theismann is an a-hole. Same thing for Ron Jaworski. Openly roots for his old team like mad.
Cliche-ridden and pedantic on the show. He needs to take tips from old Cowboys like Darryl "Moose" Johnston and Troy Aikman. If you just read the text of their appearances and comments, you would have no idea that they were both former Cowboys. That's how fair and impartial they are now.

Kind of appropriate that the Jets close out ABC's run, since the first ABC Monday Night Football game in 1970 was the Jets vs. the Browns. Too bad they couldn't have closed out their run the same, but then again, it'd be nice to see one decent team play. Big grin

Something not right with MNF not being on ABC. Just seems like a sacralige.  Sad

Less than 15% of the US receives their TV over the air. Given the large amount of rural population(little guys) who depend on satellite and have to pay extra for local channels and may not now be getting MNF the net actual number affected negatively will be minor.

Also, in a couple years(2009?) when things go digital I think it's safe to say that MNF will return on one of the additional channels available to each broadcast station.

Let me put it more directly. I live just outside of BOS, and I refuse to pay for cable TV. I think it's a shameless way of raping the general public. More and more programming (mostly sports, including almost all MLB regular-season games and many playoff games) has made it's way onto local cable netwroks such as NESN or national networks such as ESPN. So, I cannot even watch the Red Sox day-to-day or in the first round of the playoffs unless the game is on a weekend at prime-time. Know thee well, that I have absolutely no chance of getting ticket for one of these games unless I want to shell out big bucks, despite them all being sold out by February.

That's just plain wrong, and I hate the fucking Capitalist ESPNs of the world for doing it. You absolutely cannot and will not change my mind, so don't even bother responding, unless you feel like venting, which is your right.

We are increasingly living in a society where every last cent is squeezed from us to make the rich even richer. Even if you can afford it, thats not really the point.

If you can't afford it, it only widens the gulf between the 'haves' and the 'have-nots.'

Your views of the ABC/ESPN are right on the money (pun intended).
