A survey in the UK has shown that regional accents can influence your chances when looking for a job. The accents seen as most acceptable were those from the home counties followed by American, Scottish and Indian accents. Bottom of the list and seen as least trustworthy were Scouse, Brum and Welsh accents!

Och aye the noo Jimmy gie's the job!

Oh and can anyone spot the similarities with the list below?

It's counties not countries, these are the counties that border London.

From Wikipedia:
In 1888 with the laying down of London's formal borders and the creation of the County of London these prescriptively became that of Kent, Surrey, Middlesex and Essex with sections of Kent, Surrey and Middlesex used to make up the county.

In 1965 when London's borders expanded further into those counties and Hertfordshire to become Greater London, the list grew to include the counties of Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, and Berkshire. At this stage, the remainder of Middlesex became absorbed into London with small sections ceded to Surrey and Hertfordshire.

It should be noted that in common usage the phrase is not necessarily applied with such geographical precision. The Home Counties are sometimes called London and the South-East or referred to as the London Commuter Belt or the London Metropolitan Area.

Red Sox fans tend to have accents that make them appear to be a few clowns short of a circus.  stirthepot

Not too sure. It just depends on the way I type in my username when I log-on.

I should not have to try to understand a person because of an accent. I want to be spoken to by a person who I can understand CLEARLY.

Jagflyer if you had to hear some of the accents on TV and radio here, as well as some of the announcements made by SAA flight attendants you would swear it is not English being spoken. I don't understand what is so difficult about the concept of appointing someone who CAN speak in a job where speaking is required! Or is that somehow discrimination?
