The best of Scotland, like "Old Lang Syne", belongs to the world; it refuses to be confined to the bleak lands north of the Tweed. It's the rest of Scotland I can do without.

That's a bit harsh isn't it? Can't we just turn all Scots into Solyent Green like in the movie?

I'm expecting Alex Salmond and Sean Connery to be taking out a contract on him after this bit:

6. When it comes to sport - and I do not count the one decent tennis player - Scotland is the Belarus of the West.

7. In fact, when it comes to just about everything, it is the Belarus of the West.

what a load of shite. Thats exactly why we SHOULD be independent, we are a great nation of great history, but thanks to the english they have destroyed our education system and everythign else.

Let us run the country ourselves and return it to its former glory.

As a nation we are cursed with a superiority complex. We really do believe that we are better - not just better than the English; better than everyone.

But thats because we ARE better than everyone else...  Silly

If you want a serious answer to that, the truth is that the Romans did go into Scotland, but felt that there wasn't anything worthwhile there to justify a campaign of pacification. It wasn't that they couldn't, it was that it wasn't worth the effort.

How can you be so certain those things would not appear anyway? Do you think the americans would just sit around and say: "Do you know what would be a great idea? To have a fleet of ships capable of defending our shores and project our force overseas, like all other independent countries in the world have. Too bad there are no scotsmen around." ?
