I was playing SCENE IT , a game, on new years Eve, when I saw some clips for Police Squad and now I have to see if I can find it on DVD.

I only know Leslie Neilson from Airplane, but what are 3-4 other really good tv or films (comedy) that he has been in....besides the NAKEd Gun Series?
to rephrase, what is HE good in?

I simply have to buy the Police Squad DVD.

He's been in a few other movies in a similar role, the names of which escape me at the moment, but none quite as good as Airplane! or the Naked Gun
series.

He is great in spoof comedies but I remember hearing that when we was younger he played serious parts.

Off the top of my head I remember, besides the ones you mentioned, a sort of James Bond spoof (before Austin Powers) and a spoof movie about Dracula.

Read this very carefully, I shall write this only once!

Indeed! He was a darling of the "Quinn Martin" series of cop/detective shows. And for further reading, try IMDB.com, too....

For serious parts, who can forget Forbidden Planet?   It was based on Shakespeare's The Tempest.

Nielsen is known for his comedic parts in Naked Gun and Airplane! these days. But he was a good serious actor, too.

BTW, I think he is originally from Canada.

I think Spy Hard is a brilliantly funny film, featuring Neilson as Agent WD-40.  Big grin

Around that same timeframe, he had a guest appearance on a M*A*S*H episode; The Ringbanger (Season One).

In 1987 (or 1988?), he appeared in a movie w/Barbara Steisand called Nuts.

He was also in a "not so funny" comedy called Men With Brooms.

Incidentally, a friend of a friend also appeared in the movie and was in a scene where he was humping someone over a desk....Not exactly what we were expecting as we all sat down to watch his "performance".

russ, no offense, but read hte thread. imdb doesnt tell you whats good and whats not! Thats why I wanted your opinions.

so I'll check out spyhard and police squad. I never cared for his serious roles. In Poseidon, it was sort of a let down, its as if you waited at every corner for a remark that just wasnt coming.

He started off as the romantic lead in "Tammy and the Bachelor" with Debbie Reynolds back in the 1960s. It was very popular. I can't watch any old Leslie Neilsen film without laughing at him, because they all look like he was perfecting the "Airplane" role, even as the Captain of the Poseidon!

He guest starred in several episodes of "The Streets of San Francisco" back in the 70's (starring Karl Malden and a very young Michael Douglas). I heard an interview of him once where he said he basically plays his current comedy roles the exact same way as his earlier serious one. The only difference is in context and timing that makes it funny.

Outside of "Airplane!", the "Naked Gun" series and "Police Squad" (one of the funniest TV shows ever), "Wrongfully Accused" was a pretty good spoof of "The Fugitive" ("It wasn't me - It was the one-eyed, one-armed, one-legged man!"). Richard Crenna also plays a funny-as-hell spoof on Tommy Lee Jones' character as the lead US Marshall chasing him.
