I'm seriously considering a short trip to St. Maarten this summer with my daughter, just to lay on the beach with honking great jets flying over me head. I know the Sunset Beach Bar is right by the airport, but what about hotels? I'd like a really nice one, with airport views if possible. Anybody got any ideas?

There are a few hotels including the Sonesta which is right next to the airport, and good views, plus it is listed in Hemisphere's Magazine since United's Three Perfect Days was in St. Maarten to promote their new service. It is so amazing down there and it is absolutely a great airport with amazing views!

You can find reviews of the Sonesta on this page of tripadvisor.com

Thanks! I'll take your advice. Sonesta is a well-respected hotel chain, anad I've stayed in them before. That sounds good.

I stayed at The Princess Port de Plaisance Resort and Casino (it was also known as a Sheraton at one time), that's located on Simpson Bay. From the pool and cafe near the gym, you can see the runway. The jumbos that need some extra space to climb and turn come directly overhead. It's not a bothersome amount of noise since only a few fly right over the hotel per day, but the highlight of the week was a noisy Corsair 747 banking right over our heads.

Is it closer than the Sonesta?

No, the Port de Plaisance is across the lagoon from Maho Beach where the Sonesta is located and under the flight path for take-offs, not landings. Maho Beach itself isn't very wide (and I think it had some hurricane damage since I was there last). If you just want to be right up close and personal to the airport the entire time (which is what I'm seeing reading your initial post a second time), the Sonesta is probably your best choice.

Yep, lie on the beach....drink rum and watch planes.....sounds like a little slice of heaven too me......so thanks!

My friends think I'm weird, because plane-spotting isn't a girly thing to do....

I stayed at the Sonesta back in '99 and the location is convenient, the scenery and spotting wasn't bad at all. I'd go back! Big grin In a heatbeat!
