A parade to mark the 84th anniversary of the Iraqi police force was being held at the police academy nearby Iraq's interior ministry, when it was disturbed by what has become the daily routine in the country: a set of suicide bombs.
The key event was being shown live on Iraqi national television and was attended by Interior Minister Bayan Jabr, Defence Minister Saadun al-Dulaimi as well as US ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad, who came to underline President Bush's remarks Iraqi forces were 'almost' ready to take over control.
People on TV could see a mortar bomb land in the grounds where the annual Iraq Police Day parade was being held.
Only a few moments later, one -possibly 2- suicide bomber(s) detonated explosives strapped to the body at an entrance to the ministry, police sources said.
At least seven people have been killed and 35 injured.
The attack is similar in style to a stream of incidents all over Iraq last week, when suicide bombers strapped with explosives killed around 150 people, including 7 US soldiers, says the BBC's Alistair Leithead in Baghdad.
