Boston has surprised me. They have been getting some outstanding goaltending from I believe Byron Dafoe, with only two goals allowed in three games, and they won all those three.
Another team which I have to mention, because I'm a big fan of theirs, is the L.A. Kings. While they lost a huge precense in Luc Robataille in the off season to the Red Wings, their performance in the off season has been better than the Wings, who are only 2-2, while the Kings are 2-1. They are getting some great performance from Felix Potvin who has a GAA in the three games of 2.0
I think if you are a Detroit Red Wings fan, anything short of a Stanley Cup this year will be a major dissapointment. They made some huge acquisitions in Luc Robataille, Brett Hull, and of course Dominik Hasek. I personally don't like them (I'm a huge Kings fan), but they really have a good shot at it this year.
One of my proudest moments as a Kings fan was last season's playoffs when the Kings came back from a 3-0 defecit in game three and then went on to win four in a row against the Red Wings, knocking the second seeded team out of the playoffs. I'd like to see another showdown between the two teams again. Also, the Kings were the team that gave the Avalanche their best fight in the playoffs. They played better against Colorado than even the New Jersey Devils did.
So I'm really hoping to get a great season from the Kings.

p.s. Good to know there's NHL fans out there! Greatest sport

Leafs have to win the cup this year. Not because they have the best team, but I'm sick of watching the news every year and seeing all the whiners going off about the 34 year absence of cup parade in Toronto. Please make them shut up. If it means thiefing the Cup, let's do it by all means.

The wings look pretty good to me, especially with all the acquisitions. I may be biased here since I'm a huge Brett Hull fan. I would like to see them bone up a little more on defense, though, as well as a trade with Toronto - Hasek for Cujo.
I think the sleeper in the west will be Vancouver.
I'll be happy as long as the Blues fall on their faces!

I play hockey goalie, so I'm a big NHL fan, but mostly I keep an eye on the goalies. Byron Dafoe is one of my favorite, and his story to success is great. He was brought into Boston to be a backup to Jim Carey, who was having some pretty good seasons, and was shining in the league.
Boston's coach at the time told Dafoe that even though he was in the backup position, he wanted him to compete and show dedication to get the starting position. Well, Byron did just that, and actually started posting better stats than Jim Carey. Dafoe ended up splitting the starts 50-50 with Jim Carey, and he really shined.
Eventually, by the next season Dafoe took over the starting goalie position, and Jim Carey just fizzled out under the pressure. Now Carey isn't even in the NHL, and is playing somewhere in the minors. Shows how if you work real hard and have determination and drive, you can really get anywhere with enough time.

I agree with Tbar about the RedWings. Anything outside of the Cup and they'll be walking around with their heads down. Major acquisitions usually mean the team is on an immediate mission to win the cup. There's no waiting for tomorrow, they want it now. These players don't come cheap. But if there's any team that would give Detroit a challenge, that's Colorado. I've always liked the Avalanche's chemistry on and off the ice. That's a damn good team even without Bourque, they'll still give Detroit a run for their money.
I myself am a Blackhawks fan so I'm not really rooting for Detroit. I wish the Blackhawks can do something about their current situation. Amonte still isn't signed, Thibault, our goalie looks promising but we say that every year, Sutter will be our fourth head coach in four seasons, a lot of big name players are on the last year of their contracts and our draft picks from the last few years haven't been maturing and materializing. I went to the Hawks first pre-season game against Dallas and they looks good (for a Hawks fan any win is good right now) so who knows what they can do this year. At this point, I'll be happy if they just make the playoffs. Not to sound arrogant, but playoff hockey without the Blackhawks just doesn't seem right. If you're an older chap then you'll understand what I mean.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to the upcoming NHL season. There should be quite a few surprise teams this year. I know you'll enjoy watching them as much as I will.

Since the Pens broke my heart by trading Jagr, I've now begun to support my local team a lot more. The Thrashers could do something this year if they can keep the injuries to a minimum. Expecting quite a bit from the two big name rookies, Dany Heatley ('00 1st round pick, returned to UW for one more season) and Ilya Kovalchuk (this year's #1 pick). I went to a preseason game last week, and all of Atlanta's goals were scored by these two youngsters. In three exhibition games, Kovalchuk has scored 4 goals, and last night during the broadcast, when he scored, the play-by-play commented, "Let's start the season early, before this guy cools off!"

Honestly I stopped following the NHL. I still love to play hockey and to watch it but I really could (almost) care less about who wins the cup. I am a Penguins fan and last year was their year thoughb thr Devils proved to tough for them. Go Columbus Blue Jackets My homestate team. And Go Cleveland Barons my homw town(AHL) affaliate of the sharks.

What does everyone think of the Rangers? Personally I think that if Lindros stays healthy, they will make some noise in the East. That is a BIG if though...

Hey Che,
What happened to the Cleveland Lumberjacks? Do they still exist but play in a different league or did they change their name to the Barons? They used to be the Blackhawks minor league affiliate. I haven't been keeping up on the minor league tip lately (at least the last year and half).

I dont follow hockey as closely as football or basketball, but I guess I have to root for the Florida Panthers for a variety of reasons:
1. FLL is my home away from home
2. We have season tickets for them
3. We know the new ownership extremely well personally...
So, in summation...GO PANTHERS!

I hope Colorado wins, but they'll have to find another goal, since Bourque is gone. With absence of Peter Forsberg, it's gonna be even tougher, but hey, we did it once, we can do it again!
And also, I think Detroit has the best chance this year.

But you know the Leafs aren't going to win it They've loaded up on high priced whiners of the finest caliber (Reichel and Mogilny) and the whole Cujo thing is going to distract the team. I fear a self-destruct.
But I agree...jsut to shut up everyone it would be great for them to win.

Avalanche will never lose another game! just as the Denver Broncos will never be defeated again! I say Avs will win each game with 8-0 or above. Sadly Broncos arnt winning each game so far like i thought they would... 70-0 what a shame Ray Bourque isnt playing anymore... We will all miss his "Big time body blast's" I feel Joe Sakic's wrist shot might be nearing an all time top speed of 110MPH this season! as you can tell I am a very logical guy when it comes to my Colorado sports teams eh? take what i say with a grain of salt! go Avs and Mighty Mighty Broncos all the way to victory!
