I was in my car the other day, and on the radio there was this program about "special days/months" and I got to thinking, so many don't make sense, or are utterly useless.
The below list is not meant to trash a person or group.
Martin Luther King Jr day (3rd monday in January)- Schools get off, many gov't places close. What is the use of this day? He was a good person for civil rights and whatnot, but there is really no reason to have a day to celebrate him.
Woman's Equality Day (August 26)- That's like saying that we have to treat women as equals ONLY on that day..
Child Health Day (First Monday in October)- I guess this is the only day that we are supposed to care about the health of our kids.. riiiiiight..
National Hurricane Preparedness week (Third week in may) Should be a mandatory "How to get your asses in gear" week for Louisiana.. That's for sure.. Otherwise, Anyone on the coasts should already KNOW what the heck to do!
Women's History Month (March) Well, Women have been around since Men, and if you look at the bible's way of things then Women are responsible for the expulsion form paradise.. I don't see a "Men's history month"
Black History Month (February)- I guess Feb. was made this "special" month to learn about black people. Keep in mind that there are black people who hate this "observance", like Morgan Freeman. They (rightfully) feel that nothing was done to "Earn" this recognition
National Domestic Violence Awareness Month (October)- Shouldn't we be aware of this all year, not just a specific month?
General Pulaski Memorial Day (October 11)- Who the hell is General Pulaski?!?!!?
National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month (September)- So if you're serious about recovery, do it in September.. OR ELSE..
National Caffeine Awareness Month (March)- Common.. Caffiene is great!! Especially for pilots, flight attendants,a nd college students!

Polish general who was a great asset to the colonies during the Revolutionary War.
His birthday is celebrated throughout Illinois on the first Monday in March, mainly because of the large polish population in Chicago. I certainly enjoyed the day off from school.

No, I'm pretty sure Secretary's Day ranks up there, too.
Quoting Airlinelover (Thread starter): National Stalking Awareness Month (January)- Wow.. They made one for FLAIRPORT..
January?! Are you kidding? It's too cold to stalk in January! Try May or something.

This should be in January, post holidays. Coincides nicely with a resolution.

It's the end of baseball season and gives the players' wives some recognition.
Eternal darkness we all should dread. It's hard to party when you're dead.

You can ditch the rest of them but please keep this one.

Depends on whether you think it's relevant to celebrate historical figures in general and their contribution to society. There are a lot of people that would see good reason to celebrate this guys life. Surely there are other individuals who get a day, (apart from the Polish war guy)

For Australia
Labour Day
This was to celebrate in part the 8 hour work day. Now that we have a 38 hour week this holiday is pretty much useless. It is also celebrated on different days around Australia. May 1st in Qld where I live.
Queens Birthday Long Weekend
This one is pointless. Great if you are a student studying for mid year exams. I don't see its relevance.

I certainly wouldn't call MLK Jr. Day useless. To say that would be a slap in the face to all of the work that he did and the work of others during the civil rights movement.

Nor do I. I once said it in my signature,If MLK had the same rights
as whites back then,no racism,no suspicions because he's black,
and based upon his views, and he if wanted to run for the Presidency,
he would have been one the finest CIC,in my opinion.
