Landed On My Coccyx

So, after slipping at the top of the stairs on Saturday night (don't ask) and my arse becoming intimately acquainted with all fourteen steps, the doc says I may have damaged my coccyx. It's swollen and purple. She says there's nothing that can be done but wait and see, and put me on two types of prescription-strength painkillers and Valium, and given me the week off work (can life get any better in the middle of January?).

So, has anyone any advice how, without doing any more damage, I can stretch this right through to the middle or end of February?

When I was a kid, I got kicked there during a karate sparring match. I couldn't do a sit up for almost a year. Go buy one of those rubber donuts to sit on at first. Other than pain meds, there is nothing you can do to help it heal quicker.

If I got Bray right, he has no intention in getting it healing quicker...

Suggestion: I send this link to your boss. He'll kick your ass, that should do the job...  Wink

Hi Braybuddy

Sorry to hear about your "mishap". Coccyx' fractures are very rare, you probably haven't broken anything, just bruised your "behind". Basically the treatment is correct: rest and pain medication. It does help to do some "sitzbad" and let the injury "float" for a while.

The only thing you should be careful with are any paresthesias (tingling, dorment sensation) or loss of strenght in your legs. That might suggest a higher nervous injury, and you should see someone immediately.

Hope you get better soon.

Alex

That was the first thing she asked, and there are none of those symptoms.

Oh I'm not in any hurry. Just enjoying the rest and medication! And plenty of time to do nothing but post rubbish in here.

Thanks. A sore and swollen coccyx can be a painful thing!

Spinal nerves to Plexus lumbalis, you mean?  tired

I would be more concerned with roots and actual nerves of the plexus sacralis. Lumbalis is way up for him to hurt while falling (unless he breaks his saccrum). But you can certainly damage a few roots if you break S2-S3.

By coincidence, it happened with a patient last week, when it was so damn slippery outside.

I sympathize with your affliction, as I once took a spill from a stool. Landed directly on my coccyx, as well, from about four feet up. I was in high school at the time and proceeded to feign indifference, but (pun intended) the pain was nauseating.

There's not much less comfortable than sitting on a hematoma for a month! My advice is to nut-up and go about your life, as there's not a helluva lot you can do.  Smile
