Here's the link to the companies stat sheet on the weapon.

http://dillonaero.com/

As I thought it's electrically powered so hopefully they have back up power or it could easily be disabled. If you check out the pics, they do offer a Humvee mount. No longer will you have to talk about that "Buck" that got away! Interestingly they don't give a caliber. Wonder if you get to pick your favorite?

Isn't 50 rds/sec (3000 rds/min) on the low end for gatling guns?

The electronic gatling type guns that have been out for a while are generally capable of firing for short periods at extremely high rates. The problem with mounting a minigun is that it weighs alot, hence this one being made from titanium and lowering the weight, but the ammo also weighs alot. Then there's recoil.

The GE M-61 20mm has been in use for 40 years, and the A-10 uses a 30mm GAU-8, and the GAU-19 is the .50 minigun that is mounted on some helos nad is a complete badass as well.

They have a 5.56 minigun that has been mounted on plenty of smaller vehicles (including a badass GMC Suburban), but its drawbacks sometimes outweigh the benefits. You have to carry alot of ammo to make it last through most gunfights which is why you'll see them either in conjunction with another heavy weapon or on fixed mountings. You'll often see specops helos with a minigun and a traditional .50 cal on the other side.

It's pretty cool to see, and absolutely terrifying if you hear that buzzsaw sound and know that your own side doesn't have any.

Those things will shred what they hit.....as long as you don't run out of ammo too quickly.

The Gatling isn't a new weapon. I am not sure about it's application at Lawrence Livermore though.

The one advantage of any electrically function weapon such as the Gatling or the Chain gun family is that you can simply change the rate of fire, depending on how fast or slow you run the motor that powers it.

There is a 3 barrel .50 gatling out there, I am not sure if that is an improvement over the M2 though.

They have a defense nuclear research facility there and they produce/handle weapons grade material on a regular basis. The application at LL would be one of defence against anyone who thought it would be good to attack the facility. The neighbors moved there after the place was built and don't need to be whining about security measures.....its like the noise whiners at airports who move in way after the airports built.

It's got a good compromise between ammo consumption and high rate of fire. It's fairly devastating.

True, but my thinking is more around the thinking the military did when they took the M16A1 which was full auto and made the A2 which only has a 3 round burst.

I think they spent a lot of money on something that will make a lot of noise, but won't be any more effective then a M249 or a 60.

That and you don't need a battery to get the M2 to run.

Yes...it is much more effective as it has the same range, but a higher rate of fire. It will literally shred whatever it hits up to frontal armor on a BMP. The advantage is that you have multiple rounds hitting the same spot and achieving greater penetration in each hit. This is the way that the GAU-8 opens up MBT armor....the first strike doesn't do it. It's the 5 more that hit in the same spot that second that do it.

Quoting L-188 (Reply 19):

Well, most of them are hooked into power sources with continuous flow. They don't need batteries. That's one of the reasons that you don't see them hand carried.

You've got to have the right tool for the job.  thumbsup  to the Lab or whatever agency made the decision for the hardware, and many congrats to Dillon for their contract win! I know these are top-quality pieces if they are as well-made as their reloading equipment is!
