I used to do an awful lot of mountain-walking when I lived in North Wales. I'll be moving back there (actually right in the National Park) in under 3 weeks, so I intend to mountain-walk at least twice-weekly again.

I don't know that much about exercise - I mean, what will happen to what, etc. - so: will my general fitness and muscle increase substantially with regular mountain-walking (like 5-12 miles up mountains, past 3,000 feet, or whatever) over an 8-month period?

I used to do a lot of cycling when I was quite a bit younger (I could ride about 9 miles in under 30 minutes when I was 17). I am thinking about getting another bike to go cycling for an hour or whatever most days. What benefits would this have, when coupled with my walking, in terms of overall fitness and muscle?

Finally, I might run rather than cycle. Would running or cycling be more beneficial? I haven't done much running before, so I don't know much about it and its benefits, etc.

The idea of a gym doesn't really appeal: I'm very much an outdoors person and would much prefer to spend time outdoors while concurrently improving my fitness and muscle.

Any input?

I believe that too much exercise can be counter-productive, so I'd truly appreciate any input.

Having spent a lot of years in the Army, exercise was an integral part of my daily routine.

Not so much anymore now that I'm retired, but I do continue to play racquetball and walk . . . . in the summer I ride my Mountain Bike.

Back in the day however, I ran every day . . . between 3 and 5 miles. On a good day a two mile run would take 13-14 minutes. Except when I was at Ft. Bliss Texas - something about that heat and altitude . . .  irked 

Racquetball was generally a daily occurence as well . . . my partner and I played as many games as we could against all comers every afternoon.

Didn't lift or anything of that nature - but maintained myself in order to pass (easily) the US Armys APFT . . . Army Physical Fitness Test. It consists of a 2 mile run, a situp event and a push up event. Really no measure of your physical fitness if you want my sincere opinion. So what . . .you can do 60 pushups, 55 situps and handle a two mile run in under 17 minutes . . . big deal.

If you really want to test a soldier's endurance through a ruck sack (with 75pounds of crap in it) on his/her back, hand them a M60 and a hundred roudns of ammo and tell them the finish line is 20 miles out, you have 4 hours . . . adios.

I agree too much exercise can break the body down too far. When I was a Drill Sergeant my troops always had a day of rest each week where we did no physical training at all. And on other days of the week we alternated between upper and lower body work.

The best - and almost only good - thing about living in the DC area in the late 1990s was the hunderd plus miles of bike trails. It was nothing to leave my house in Springfield and trek out to Mount Vernon or Great Falls Park - or both. Great way to spend a Saturday . . .

I used to do a lot of hill-walking when I was in South Wales - all over the Brecon beacons and Black Mountain. Did a lot on the coastal footpaths as well. It kept me in shape and I wish I had the energy to start again.

Maybe I will as there are some good walks here on the Island. On holiday I managed to walk up to Timpanagos Caves in Utah, which was something horrendous but satisfying!

Until then I'll just carry on doing the maintenance on the house - seems to be never ending and extremely strenuous.

Walking I do because I need to . . . I could ride everywhere I suppose, but walking keeps the ticker ticking.

Mountain Biking however - even if it's only a trail ride - while similar to running, gives the brain something to do . . .

Evaluate the hill (up or down) and how to attack it . . . watch the curve, watch the mud, and be wary of the stream - keep the front wheel up, on and on . . . oh, and watch out for the  splat  tree. Literally tore a fiberglass handle bar off my bike in Pennsylvania one afternoon  irked .

Walking is fine - but biking is better.  thumbsup 


FYI: I don't bike in the winter up here - many do - with spikes on their tires, not I.

As for over doing it . . . you can work the muscle too far in my opinion. Being sore is sometimes ok, being in pain is not. All that no pain, no gain garbage is exactly that. Give the muscle time to recover . . . or other things will go wrong. A sore muscle will call on other muscle to compensate for it's inability to perform - does that make sense? If you twist your ankle for instance, and walk on it for a few days, you'll notice muscles in your calf start to respond. They are compensating for your loss in the ankle.

Pain is never a good thing.

I have a shed, of exquisite quality and size, which takes up about 1/4 of our postage-stamp back yard. It is currently filled with the junk of most of the universe and some we dont know about! Big grin

I see. Well, my father used to be in the RAF.

ANC - how did you find your muscles developed rather than general fitness?

Ah, so from that i can deduct, that providing your kids have taken after you (poor lads), that you will indeed buy me a beer in MAN, but will be an ungrateful old sod when I buy you one, hence levelling the stakes and providing me with much cannon-fodder to blast you with!  Smile

If you're asking did one exceed the other, I'd say I can't tell you.

I was never so concerned about looking like Ahhhhnold as I was having stamina. Strong is good, but if you don't have the endurance, you lose.

Racquetball and biking will do that . . . with the benefit of the increased muscle mass in your legs . . .

No. I meant to ask: did you notice a change in muscle? I want to find a good way by which to increase muscle - and general fitness - without having to visit the gym (I don't want to be indoors and all boring).

I did not use a gym, except for the racquetball courts. They are boring and full of overmuscled widgets too full of themselves . . . not my stle - I like the solitude and peace of riding alone . . .

Yes, particularly in my legs - when I really started biking a lot in the early 1990s there was no doubt about the increase in muscle mass in my legs.

The push ups and pull ups I did to maintain my upper body did the trick with that as well - not to mention the constant workout one gets fixing, and fighting a tank. Those damn beasties are cool as hell, and also a lot of work.

So the combination of exercise, daily activity, biking, and racquetball definitely showed.

If you don't want to be indoors - get on a bike, go for a ride. Halfway or every 10th mile, stop - do some pushups and situps - then get back on the bike and go again.

Now, I'm not advocating killing yourself . . . remember, no pain no gain is pure BS - just a dozen reps of each will do. And it breaks the monotony as well.

And as a caveat - when I didn't play racquetball or decided not to run because of weather or what have you, I could tell a difference - I felt 'sluggish' throughout the day.

Getting back on track (away from the sniping! Big grin) as I work in an office now, I need to do something.

When we had two collie dogs, we used to walk them on the beach, in the hills and just about everywhere. Nothing strenuous but it kept us relatively fit and in reasonable shape. Now, the most walking I do is from the front door to the car. About 1 1/2 yards!

A colleague of mine at work came in this morning after her first gym session. She went from exercising straight to sitting at her desk. She's now wondering why everything aches!!!  wideeyed  Keeping fit and trim has to be structured and regular, which is something that isnt always easy in this day and age.

So, I have between now and July 1st to regain my sylph-like figure and muscles of steel. Guess I better get a regime going.

I am a big fan of runnning and cycling....Toss in swimming and you can do a triathlon.  Smile

I may do it at a different level than you are planning (Doing my second Ironman Lake placid this year) but i am a strong proponent of exercise.

Plus an added benifit is if you decide to indulge in some fast food it is no big deal (this does not mean every meal)

Warm up and Cool down.

STRETCH before and after, or you'll dang sure know it. Besides being sore, it's the best way I know to rip/tear muscles/ligaments . . .

I still stretch every morning - the old fashioned FM21-20 (US Army Field Manual 21-20, The Army Physical Fitness Program) way . . . it's been working for almost 30 years . . .

Interested in the manual, it's available on line.

Here in Melbourne, the suburbs are full of bike paths. For those that are familiar with melbourne, I can ride from my place in Bayswater to Patterson Lakes on the bay - 40km each way! (You can also stop off at the kiosk at Jells Park for a quick beer!) I've also got the Dandenongs nearby with lots of forest trails!

Great way to de-stress when I get home from work!
