I dropped Earthlink and got broadband service through the local cable company when I started having network problems and they flat-out REFUSED to check whether the problem was on their end. After first being told that it was my problem because, and I quote: "we don't support Linux--you can only use Windows or Macintosh with our service," they made me go through the same useless troubleshooting process (on another system that the tech was allowed to know something about) four times, before telling me that my modem was worn out and I had to buy a new one. From them. Or they wouldn't guarantee ANYTHING would work.
My modem, by the way, worked just fine when I tested it on a friend's line. They just didn't want to bother calling the local provider.
Fortunately, I'm now paying ten bucks a month less for cable broadband that goes at least four times faster. In a way, I'm glad they were such jerks... otherwise, I may not have realized what I was missing.
Hope your luck is better. If not, hope you didn't sign a contract...

They always tell me that I need to reboot my PC or reset the modem. I only
had a 3 year contract which will end soon. I am thinking about switching.
It works fine for 3 months in a row then it will have a bad week where
the modem reboots every day. I work from Home alot and need a reliable
ISP.

Quoting PIA777 (Thread starter): Does anyone else here have Earthlink DSL service? If so, How do you guys
like it? Does the modem reboot alot for you? It does for me.
I've had it for almost three years and over the last month or so, I've come close to cancelling it due to having to reboot the modem at least once or twice a week (usually on Friday or Saturdays for some odd reason). Up until recently, I'd have to reboot the modem maybe once a month (or maybe every 2-3 months). About two weeks ago, I had to reset it once every 5-10 minutes for about 45 minutes. I don't even bother with calling Earthlink Tech Support, as they are worthless (I had an issue about a year ago and emailed them about it and never heard back. I figured out what was wrong with my setup and fixed it without them. An old neighbor of mine had some problems and tech support was no help at all [I ended up fixing her problem with trying to access Earthlink].).
I've thought about switching broadband providers, and maybe be doing so in the near future, as if I wanted a cheaper rate with Earthlink, I'd have to commit to them for 2 years, while the competitor only requires a year (plus the equivalent service to what I currently have is noticably cheaper.). I've already started to switch a lot of the stuff that I have sent to my Earthlink email address to my Gmail account in preparations to switching providers.

Same here. It must have been some server issue. They had an outgage yesterday in Georgia for about 10 hours.

I've been using EarthLink DSL since September 2005 and no problems so far! Must be the high-quality DSL network service here in Sacramento, CA (SBC did a lot of DSLAM upgrades for DSL service in the last few years).

I had an issue a few minutes after I posted my earlier post. I turned it off, waited a little bit (played one game of NHL06), turned it back on, worked fine. The outage must not have affected all local users.

Same here. Every time I'd get booted off their phone answering morons would run me through the same stuff. I'd check it by dialing up another server.
They were OK when they first expanded into this area, they had bought up a bunch of small ISPs. Then, they started "improving" things.
I've got broadband cable and even though it's a little pricey it's almost never down. In two years there have been one or two outages. And the tech people who answer my occasional calls seem to be quite competent.

If Comcast's broadband service in my area is like their cable television service, I'm better off sticking with Earthlink DSL.

I had DSL for awhile, 1-year contract. It was so horrible, I finally went with Comcast Broadband after 6 months, and continued to pay my DSL bill monthly for the rest of that one-year commitment, even though I had tossed their modem and removed their programs from my drive!
I have been completely happy with Comcast Broadband, have had it for nearly 2 years now. I wouldn't be without it at all!!! Don't even THINK about ANY DSL service, especially Earthlink. None of them are as reliable as cable internet, from everything I've heard from friends and read.
Those who want to do something will find a way; those who don't will find an excuse.

The only reason why I got DSL to start with was that when I got it three years ago, Earthlink DSL was the only broadband choice in my area. Comcast has offered the cable service for about two years now (they had to upgrade the lines and stuff in my neighborhood as the old lines dated back to the late 1970s, when my neighborhood was one of the first in the county to be wired for cable television.).
