Seems there's not one but two 9/11 movies coming to theatres this year.

The first to come out is Flight 93, the trailers for it just began playing today at the theatre I work at, and people in the lobby watching it were just frozen staring at it as it played, but there's already a thread on that one here.

The other movie, however, that comes out later in the year stars Nicholas Cage as Sgt. John McLoughlin. This is the film summary from Imdb:

In the aftermath of the World Trade Center disaster, hope is still alive. Refusing to bow down to terrorism, rescuers and family of the victims press forward. Their mission of rescue and recovery is driven by the faith that under each piece of rubble, a co-worker, a friend a family member may be found. This is the true story of John McLoughlin and William J. Jimeno, the last two survivors extracted from Ground Zero and the rescuers who never gave up. It's a story of the true heroes of that fateful time in the history of the United States when buildings would fall and heroes would rise, literally from the ashes to inspire the entire human race.

So what do you think? Is this a movie you're going to want to see, or even feel ready to see?

I'm surprised the movie won't be starring Bruce Willis, who manages to avert the attack.

See that's the problem with making a movie about 9/11: No happy ending...

The people of the US and the greater free world have suffered more than enough from things that stemmed from 9/11. The last thing we need is to sit through the very sketchy one-dimensional acting of yet another Cage movie. If he were not related to Francis Ford Coppola he would be serving fries at a Wendy's in North Islington, Iowa by now. Ridiculous. The sad part of all this is that many people will go see this movie and he will continue to get work. Simply ridiculous. They might as well have cast Vin Diesel or better yet Christian Slater.

The problem I see with the 9/11 movies is that it would be hard to develope a solid plot that's both interesting and captivating, in the "normal" sense of movie plot lines. For instance, Flight 93. How the heck are they going to make a movie and keep you entertained when really we knew little about what was going on in that flight. Secondly, this all happened so quickly. It wasn't like a movie where the planes sit on the ground for hours and the terrorists make demands. They plowed them into buildings.

For the people in the WTC, the major story there was the people who escaped. But again, they escaped rather quickly and we don't know much about what was going on with the people on the upper floors who couldn't escape other than what we saw from the ground.

So unless they are planning to give us lots of news replays, it seems like a hard mission to me.

Since when has Hollywood cared about facts of events? They'll make up some story about the people on the plane, or talk to families who were in contact with those on the plane, but who knows... I just hope they don't do anything to tarnish the memories of those people lost that day, or romanticize the movies.

And because of the nature of what happened, these films are going to end on a completely over the top "God Bless America" note, which will probably work in the US, but the rest of world will be chucking up on the carpet. Not, I suspect, the intention.

I for one won't see it because it will probably be like Pearl Harbor. Mostly filler of a romance or something with the last 20 minutes about the actual event.

If these are the same cops I remember reading about after the attacks, the building actually collapsed while they were somewhere near the fourth floor, and the stairwell protected them. They were in there for hours, including having to watch one of their colleagues die under a girder. I could see how that would make an interesting movie.

Just what we need, idiots like Nicolas Cage profiting from the death of those poor people. Hollywood makes me sick, can't they leave some things alone?

I know. Gross. Even the mostly-OK Saving Private Ryan ends on a hideous shot of a US flag with the sun shining through it. Thanks for acknowledging the pivotal role played by the Brits.

Yeah just like the film about the Enigma code machine that was captured by the BRITISH unless you watch the hollywood movie version.

Knowing how Hollywood screws up reality just because it doesnt siut them, it will be interesting to see how history is changed here.

Any thoughts?

I don't think that critisim of SPR is justified. The movie is about an American vet, in an American unit, who is sought out by another American unit, from an American beachhead. It is a work of fiction and never intended to be an accurate protrayal of the D-Day invasion....If you want that go read C. Ryans book "The Longest Day" which was made into a movie by the same name.

Like it or not, I would have more problems if Tom Hanks and Sizemore had jumped off from Gold or Sword rather then Omaha beach.

I don't know what Hollywood was thinking but I think it's WAY too early to be starting to make any movie related to 9/11. I don't think I'll go out of my way to see them.

There have been more than one threads on this movie already.

The untitled Oliver Stone film. It's not about 9/11 so much as the lives of the two port authority officers that survived the fall of the twin towers. There will be no video footage much less reenactment of any a/c crashing according to Stone. Much of the film will focus on the effort to find the two missing cops.

We prolly won't see a true film depicting events on 9/11/01 for another 5 years.
