Beyond the Olympic Games are the traditions underlying them....
As the Winter Olympic Games begin anew in Torino, let us all hope for and promote the cause of peace and goodwill among all nations in attendance there. In a time of strife, perhaps now, more than ever, the values of mutual respect and friendship should be held in the highest regard.
But it's not the Olympics that I celebrate in this thread, and here is why: The Olympic movement is simply one aspect of the entire set of traditions in our civilization that encourages humanitarianism and humanism.
More important than the Games themselves is the lasting legacy of unity between nations and among all people that share the same desires. The Games will end, but the beneficial message they convey should persist.
We are heirs to the Western tradition of aiming for and supporting the highest ideals of mankind. This tradition rejects violence except as self-defense, and encourages understanding among all.
Such values are worth protecting as a credit to all.
