Howdy, and welcome to the Official Daytona 500 Thread. I know ANCFlyer, DeltaRules and a few others will like this one. This years Daytona 500 should be a pretty good race. Several drivers have switched teams (some for the better and some for the worse) which will make it interesting. My girlfriend and I are going to the 500 on Sunday. Its her first race. We are sitting in the Weatherly Chair, Section F, Row 9, Seats 1 & 2 (Frontstretch).

This is the 5 year anniversary of the death of the greatest driver on earth, Dale Earnhardt. I was sitting in turn 4 with my uncle back at the 2001 Daytona 500 when Earnhardt died  Sad One of the saddest days in my life. RIP Dale.

I'm hoping my boy Tony Stewart can finally pull of a Daytona 500 win. He's led the most laps in the last 2 Daytona 500's so I think he's got a good shot. Dont overlook Denny Hamlin though, he kicked everyones ass in the Shootout.

Enjoy the race. I caught a couple of the 500's when I lived down there in the early 80's (Bobby Allison won one, Cale the other), and have been to eight or ten of the July races since then. DIS is quite the race place.

Tony Stewart does look good, but there are a bunch that'll challenge him.

When you are at the race can you see the cars when they are on the oposite side of the track you are sitting? I have never been to a auto race before and always thought you could only see the cars when they go past you.

I just hope it is a clean and safe race. I want to see tight hard racing but no 'big one' crash as that hurts the race and potentially some competitive drivers.
Tony Stewart got the crazyness going when he suggested that 'someone could get killed this week" because of the 'bump drafting' (when a car creeps up to the back of another and screws up their airflow or taps them in the back where they lose grip in the rear and sometimes crash). Then you had the crew chief who has been bounced for cheating. I hope they ban him for a big chunk of the season after this race.

Contrary to most other sporting events, at an auto race, the higher up you go in the seats, the more expensive the seats, primarily because the view is so much better the higher up you go. At the 1997 July race we went to, we paid $100 per seat for seats about 40 rows up in the Winston Tower directly on the start/finish line. The best seats I've ever had for any sporting event.

The "chair" seats are the lower seats in each section, "tower" seats are the higher ones. Row 9 in the Weatherly Chairs should provide a good view of the cars entering into Turn 3, through Turn 4 down the frontstretch and into Turn 1. There might be an OK view of the backstretch, though the pit area and the facilities behind pit road might block some of it.

He certainly wasn't a happy camper after the Budweiser . . . really uptight about that bumpdrafting . . . and little Kyle Busch better pull his head out of rectal defilade before a veterans snaps it off at the collar.

This isn't the first tiem Knaus has been benched for sneaky shit . . . he's not alone I'm sure. He was benched last year for an issue with shocks. He's really screwing over Jimmy Johnson (who is a damned decent operator) by doing this crap. I wonder how you can fine someone team points at the beginning of the season - I'll bet they start with a negative 50 points this year. Self-inflicted wound.

Quoting Dragon-wings (Reply 2):

Depends on the track. Vegas: Yes. Daytona: Yes. Indy: No (Damned sillyassed mid-field grandstands - really screwed that track up). Etc.

I also hope for a clean, solid, tight race. All the more reason NASCAR needs to get rid of the damned restrictor plates. It makes racing at Daytona, Talladega, etc MORE dangerous IMO. Makes the need for bumpdrafting more prevalent. If they rule against bumpdrafting, then Restrictor Plate tracks will be relegated to simply driving in a line in a circle turning left occasionally for 500 miles. Get rid of those damn plates!!!

Funny thing is, the city built a multi-million dollar pedestrian overpass that crosses Int'l Speedway Blvd in front of the Nextel (Winston) Tower so they wouldn't clog up 8 lanes of traffic trying to cross the street to get to the speedway. Guess what? 99% of them ignore it anyway because the city still has orange-coned crosswalks set up no more than a quarter-mile on either side of the overpass in the middle of the street, with officers stopping traffic every five minutes!

What a total waste of taxpayer money...But hey, if you were a redneck with two fridgepacks of Coors under each arm, would YOU want to hike up a ramp 20 feet in the air?? Didn't think so  Wink

Really looking forward to the race and the season. My man Rusty is now on the sidelines, so I'm looking for a new driver. I didn't want to take Kurt Busch just because he's stepping into the #2, but I liked him a lot more after that incident at the end of last season. He's no doubt guilty of everything they say he did and could not prove, but that's fine with me. Yeah, he could have gotten someone hurt on a public road, but there isn't a person I know that hasn't gotten out somewhere, at sometime and let it rip. What's wrong with having a "bad boy" on the circuit? There hasn't been anyone filling that role since Sr went down, so bring it on! Go get 'em Kurt! Keep the foot down and if they get in your way, you know what to do.
Just get a driver if you're going to slam some brews after the race, I think you can afford it.

2003 is a win based on NASCAR rules...they interviewed a bunch of drivers who all said that he would've won anyway. What about 2001? That wasn't rained out. He also won the fall Talladega race in 2003. That's 500 miles -- nothing you can say about that one. Oh yeah, and the 2002 Pepsi 400, or is that not a real race in your book because it isn't long enough? Better take away all of Tony's wins that weren't in 500 mile races.

I'm also glad Chad Knaus was axed for a race. I'm tired of that cheater getting away with everything. He also sounds gay as shit when he talks (Same with Jimmie Johnson)

The early 80's were the good ole days of Nascar before all the Politically Correct fans came in.

You can see them on some parts of the track but not all because of the pits, campers, ect. Luckily they have huge jumbotron TV's that you can watch also. Like others have said, its better to watch a Nascar race from the top of the grandstands.

I used to like Mikey when he drove for DEI but I have lost all my respect for him since he went to BDR.
