What I mean is, when someone says it's 1700 hours, what is the quickest way to be able to equate that time to a 12 hour clock without having to use my fingers?

Its better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air than be in the air wishing you were on the ground. Fly safe!

Say it say's 17:00, (which is 5:00) take 2 from 7 which gives you 5.

See the pattern?

I just know it, but if it doesn't come naturally, just add 12 to convert to 24 hour, or subtract 12 to get 12 hour.

Hmm, this is interesting. You just have to use the 24 hour clock more, then you'll just know what time it is automatically.

Money does not bring you happiness. But it's better to cry in your own private limo than on a cold bus stop.

Jaspike,

OK, that's a good guide. Thanks!

To everyone else:

No, unfortunately I never went to a school or had a job that used the 24 hour clock. When I went to Europe and parts of Asia I noticed that they use it there but I can't say I use it in my everyday life. I do want to start however, hence the question.

Subtract 12 from anything over twelve. When it's 00:02, add 12... it's AM.

Actually, there´s a tiny bit more:

12 hour clock:
12:00am ... 11:59am, 12:00pm ... 11:59pm

24 hour clock:
00:00 ... 23:59
In some cases (TV schedules), even 24:00 is occasionally used as a limit for the day. (00:00 would belong to the following day.)
