Now that the media spotlight of the world is no longer focused on Detroit. It's back to business as usual.

Quoting City Councilwoman Barbra Rose Collins, after the Detroit City Council this weekend rejected a cost-saving plan to hand over control of the Detroit zoo to the private nonprofit Detroit Zoological Society.

This is not a plantation," Collins said. "We are not owned by everyone else. Black folks are not owned by white folks anymore. I made the point Saturday that the state Legislature was pimping the City of Detroit, and that we should not play the role of prostitute. That upset a lot of people, but I stand by my words. The symbolism is that Detroit is a black city, and we're not able to govern ourselves. It's a racist attitude and I resent it."

Now that's true leadership!  Yeah sure

It's sad and pathetic to see such REVERSE racial comments comming from councilwoman Barbra Rose Collins. Its a completly obvious that once again, "The Race Card" is being played when the real reason the Detroit City Zoo is suffering is due to a poorly run Detroit City Government. I mean what normal person refers the relationship between City Govenment and State Government to a "Pimp & and Prostitute"? How rediculous is that? This poor demonstration, and backwards thinking of Councilwoman Barbra Rose Collins is what keeps Racism fueling and alive still. I think she needs to issue an apology and re think her comments, last time i checked there were never any "Plantations" in michigan. Did you forget what year this is Ms. Barbra Rose Collins? This is two thousand and six, not the ealy 1900's. Were you color blind to see the whole state come together to morn the passing of Rosa Parks? Again, the comments made by Barbra Rose Collins, as a public official are irresponsible, and she should be accounted for them. She needs to think about what the state is really trying to do, and not be a "control freak" over a ZOO, that can survive through the state of michigan's control. Perhaps if the Governor of Michigan were African-American you would have kept your mouth shut.

Regards
F-OMEA.

This is just typical of city councils in the US, when you have these completely unqualified persons running the city districts. They use the race card, th poor card, the anti-conservative card to front their agendas. This almost like Mayor Ray "School Bus" Nagin in New Orleans saying that New Orleans will be "chocolate again". But it's people like this who put politics over principle. Councilwoman Collins would rather close the Detroit City Zoo than turn it over to a Zooilogical Society, run by white people. But people in her district love this kind of rhetoric, it's catnip to them. They're just as racist and close-minded as she is

Jeezus, it is clear that Detroit can't govern itself, but I don't think race is why.

Quoting FOMEA (Reply 1):

Actually get rid of the word REVERSE in that sentence. Reverse Racisim is sort of like kind of pregnant.

Pretty much right.

Just returned from a week or so away and noticed the "...Same Old Detroit" thread.

Interesting, but not surprising, the comments from Barb are mirroring former and current black leaders of the city in their nonstop reiteration that the city's failure is all via other circumstances and never give any note to their own record of incompetencies and downright theft, corruption and other various and sundry scams on the peoples they campaign to "support".

I am not a racist, but I sure as hell am prejudiced. I'm prejudiced about people that lie, cheat and steal, and (since I do base many of my feelings on mathematical ratios) the ratio "ain't" there in Detroit ever since the start of the thuggery machine of (RIP, you thankfully dead racist black bastard) former Mayor Coleman Young. Past Mayor Dennis Archer had perhaps the best chance to turn things around, but again, the ratio wasn't there. He wasn't "black enough" for the other thugs on the take from the Coleman machine and the poor, dumb constituants that only had enough cells to press the voting button that they were told to press pressed them for Kwame (who, I actually had faith in during his first campaign), but has alas shown his true colors (no pun intended).

Now, here we have this other black thug running a perpetually dwindling city. But (as I like to say); what the hell do I know? I only observed all this shit for 4 decades before I retired and bought a hilltop in Tennessee where I'll never, ever have to listen to a mayor of a (former) world-class, world-famous city to tell whitey to move out on the other side of the town (8 mile road) so the blacks can take care of all the problems.

The only way to even curb the erosion of Detroit, let alone rebuild the city, is to let the private sector call the shots; give the friggin' city official thugs and their criminal cronies some salary to keep them from raiding the coffers, but let them have NO say whatsoever about operating the city government. Then, when shit turns around in about the year 2050, maybe common sense will have a chance. I fear, though, that after we all die and future archeologists uncover the city of Detroit they will surmise that every chicken had 12 legs and 24 wings, and, where the hell did all these Krugerands come from (?).

I have many great friends and associates I've worked and partied with that are still in Detroit and will always have a warm regard for those fine people, but, Damn, I'm glad to be out of that miserable shit-hole. Regards...jack
(P.S.) The major portion of the "Detroit cleanup" for the SuperBowl was hands-on overseen, and in many cases onsite directed by a very well known businessman - a person that I'm sure everyone on this forum has heard of - and NOT the inept, bumbling efforts of the City of Detroit government.

all best; jack

Just ran into this.. from : http://www.clickondetroit.com/news/7377531/detail.html
Employees of Statewide Residential Lending in Madison Heights are without a job and under investigation for sending e-mails to City Council member Barbara Rose Collins.

One e-mail in particular contained racial slurs, using the "N" word at least four times. At the end of the message read an employee's name -- Ryan Kelly -- and the contact information from his place of business, Local 4 reported.

Once the owner of the lending company found out about the messages sent, he fired everyone in his office.

"We don't condone this," said owner Dante Rosa. "Every time I look at this it's sad to see that people can be that ignorant."

Rosa said he fired the other employees because they told him of the e-mail too late. Rosa also learned that another employee sent a message, but it did not meet the severity of Kelly's, according to the station's reports.

"I apologize in behalf of our corporation, on behalf of myself, and on behalf of my family," said Rosa.

Detroit police said they would seek a warrant against Kelly for using a computer to intimidate a person.

The investigation continues.

Well, sending those e-mails was flat out ignorant, and those responsible deserve what they get.

What is intersting though is that Rose-Collins, who's own racist comments sparked this, has not apologized, nor will she (I expect).

It seems to me that for some reason, racism against a minority person or group seems to take precident over racism perpetuated by minority persons or groups.

Isn't it all equally bad?
