Pastor Fred Phelps of the Westboro Baptist Church thinks that God is punishing America for harboring homosexuals by killing soldiers our soldiers in Iraq. That's bad enough, but then supporters of this slimeball have the audacity to show up at military funerals with signs thanking god for Improvised Explosive Devices. Although they have every right to do such a thing, it crosses a line that really shouldn't be crossed. So, in steps a group of Bikers called the Patriot Guard Riders, who also show up at these funerals and through peaceful means, show that the hateful message will not be tolerated. Maybe there is some hope for this country after all.

I saw this earlier on CNN and was quite disturbed by these folks. Thanks for posting it.
This Phelps guy is off his rocker and so are the folks with him I did a google on him and his homepage is god hates fags .com I broke it up so as not to provide a link to it.
Its only a shame the bikers arent Hell's Angels and they go kick the shit out of these idiots making a scene at a military funreal. To hold signs thanking god for IEDs to punish the soldiers of this country because they fight for gay rights in absurd and twisted. I wonder what they think about the dont ask dont tell policy.

I'm actually glad they don't. I can see some parallels between this and the recent "cartoon incidents." I'll bet Mr. Phelp's group would probably welcome violence against them as they would get a whole lot of attention out of it. This way, they can't claim being victims and are only seen as the bunch of losers they are.

You are right on this one, I knew as soon as I posted that I would get some feedback. I guess I will add that sometimes despite how much someone deserves to get beat up, it doesnt always serve that purpose.
On another note, if these funreals are on military instalations couldnt there be a way to deny them a pass to these events?

If the service is on a military installation there's not frackin' way the assholes are gettin' in . . . period.

And if Phelps and those nutjob followers showed up here in Alaska - well, tell 'em Bushpilot - Alaska is different about our Veterans'. . . I'm afraid Mr. Phelps might accidentally 'fall down' a time or three.

There are many threads on this subject in Non-Av . . . including one noting where many cities and states are passing lawas to prevent this kind of horseshit from occuring . . .

Phelps better never show his face in Alaska at GIs funeral. I will have to be off the clock that day. . . period.

The more I think about it, the more I am convinced Phelps is a fully paid up member of Club Fag.

People who spout crap like his are normally the ones who are hiding something. And most of the time, homophobes of his virulence are actually repressed or closeted homosexuals themselves.

He may have dozens of kids but I would put good money on his real tastes being more in the masculine department.

Now really, do you think you should be saying such things? You KNOW that making public statements about other people's sexuality isn't right. Making such statements behind someone's back is even worse.

Besides, it's old and busted already. He addresses that very topic on his website.

As a gay man, I detest everything these people stand for, but I would defend their right to spew all the hate and intolerance they wish on their web site, at politicians offices and yes, even at Gay Pride events. However the actions of these lunatics goes beyond the pale. Targeting the funerals of honorable people who served their country and paid the ultimate price is simply unacceptable and should not be tolerated by a civil society. While I don't call for violence against these folks, I wouldn't shed a tear if it happened nonetheless.

Well firstly, I think what Phelps and his crew are doing, is some of the very most disrespectful things one can do. They dishonor the country, the fallen soldier, that soldiers friends and family and themselves.
Secondly i commend the Bikers for doing what they are doing. A simple group of citizen volunteers going out to right what they believe is wrong. That is a quality that makes those people stand out over close minded Christian extremists.
Thirdly, I dont frown at all on ANCFlyer for his views. I respect him more than anyone else on this site despite not agreeing with him on a few issues. But what he says about AK and its vetrans is true. More vetrans in AK than anywhere per capita, AK natives per capita are the highest ethnic group in the military. They are all quite honored up here. I have friends deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan right now, and AK has lost a few ANG soldiers recently, with a huge community outpouring for thier families. If a group of bible bashings christian fundamentalists were to crash a funreal with signs that said thank god for IEDs I can tell you without a doubt violence would be brought down upon them. Now I wouldnt condone it, but I could very well see it happen. They may fall down a few times like ANCFlyer says, but that would be better for them because AK is a big place and people who do those kinds of things have a funny way of not showing up at another soldiers funreal to disturb it.

I submit as an example for you: Adolf Hitler. There are questions both about his sexuality and his bloodline, suggesting separately that he was homosexual or part Jewish. Circumstantial evidence for the former is more compelling, but if either were, in fact, true, then it would be an example of what you are referring to.

Another example would be the military father from American Beauty.  Wink

Another example, James Guckert aka "Jeff Gannon." Very interesting theory there Whitehatter.

Such enlightening words . . . . SATX . . . thanks so much . . .

Off my rocker! Off the Wall too!  laughing  Some people might be offended, but I just consider it the raving diatribe of a lunatic . . . source considered, and dismissed as a waste of bandwidth.

Better that I be off the clock if Phelps ever showed up, that way I could more readily just walk away. . . . afterall, if I were working, I'd have to protect his sorry ass and his right to assembly . . . if he had all the proper permits of course.

I wouldn't be protecting him either, but I don't have the need to prove I have balls every time somebody shouts something outrageous and obscene.
