Within the past 12 days, the local air force base has been sending it's F-16's on training missions. Now, starting 2 days ago, the number of flights per day have almost double. I am getting the impression that it's not going to be too long before we start to bomb them. This is the most active I have heard the F-16's since last year, and they did end up going over and bombing select targets in the Persian Gulf.
My question is this...
1) Has your local Air Force Base been doing the same as mine has?
2) You think this will be the nastiest war that we have seen in a long time?

MCAS Miramar is 5 miles from me and it made a lot of noise a few days ago, now it's kinda quiet, as if it is vacant.

No (in terms of how much we are made aware).
I think in a month most American will be fed up by the lack-of-immediate-action that they wont care as much anymore. This war isn't one. Those associated with the Taliban are a few hundred thousand and by now are scattered all over Afganistan, which is the size of California; we cannot bomb them, it's a waste of money, it's going to be some wierd search party "ground war" that will take years; I'll bet 2-3.
The meaning of life is curiosity; we were put on this planet to explore opportunities.

Remember, we're facing an enemy whose troops have limited information on what's happening in the outside world. To keep them gazing at the sky, wondering when it will fall....that creates fear, regardless of how much chest beating they do.
This new war will be quiet, clever and merciless. Everyone in the US military knows that. That's why options have to be thought through, then again and again.
Actually any abnormal fighter activity might still have something to do with air caps....according to what I've read, around the clock air patrols have been policing the American skies since the morning of 9/11...

Well I'm ready... and if it comes to it, I'll be joining the ranks of the United States armed forces if need be.
Anyway, to the point:
Our local military bases are really busy too:
- McChord AFB has been stepping up its cargo missions; I have been seeing a whole lot more activity at McChord than ever.
- US Navy installations: the ships based here (whether deployed already or not) are heading to the region. Additionally, I'm sure some of our Ohio-class nuke subs based here at Bangor have left, though they usually don't publicize it.
- Coast Guard and Army have stepped up patrols... the CG has .50 cannons fitted on boats in the harbor areas and has more helo traffic over the area, as does the Army.
As for how this war will be fought-- I don't think any of us know yet. This could be quiet and quick, like taking in special forces, or it could be long and big, like if we put ground troops in Afghanistan. At any rate, however we achieve our objectives, we can consider the operation a success.

I wish we'd have the capacity to sneak into the country, get out all those who are known to be innocent and are not a threat, and then bomb the living hell out of Afghanistan, teach them a lesson they, or the world, will NEVER forget.
That is how I feel, but however GW want's to do it is fine by me. But when we strike, I wanna know about it, because if we do, I might join the Service as well...

ATTENTION:
MORE TROOPS FROM UPSTATE NEW YORK SENT OVER TO THE MIDDLE EAST!
Defense secretary Donald Rumsfeld arrived today in Uzbekistan, just ahead of a thousand soldiers based at Fort Drum. They are members of the tenth and their posting to Central Asia was announced this morning by Rumsfeld and the Uzbek President, who was careful to point out that the infantry forces will not be using his country to launch land-based incursions into Afghanistan. The mission seems partly strategic--to put pressure on the Taliban and Osama Bin Laden, and partly for the military purpose of offering backup to special forces units, said to be based elsewhere, who would go into Afghanistan for commando attacks on terrorists.
Fort Drum is about 60 miles from where I live.
174th Fighter Wing is about 20 miles, and sends fighters to Iraq to patrol the no fly zone, but lately they have been training for "God" knows what.
