Maybe Bryant Gumble will be a character witness for Mr. Davis!

Olympic gold medal speedskater Shani Davis is one of three plaintiffs suing Chicago and former police superintendent Terry Hillard, alleging they were stopped because of their skin color.

Not again!?!

This oughta give Bryant Gumbel an orgasm and we shall soon see Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton standing with Mr. Davis sympathetic hands on the shoulders . . . . blah blah blah . . .

Ahhhh, the bottom frickin' line:

The other component is to get monetary damages for each of the individuals."

I'll be glad when this Olympics is all over and this guy can crawl back into whatever Canadian hole he came out of. He's a nothing, in a nothing sport. At the very best he can hope to be on a Wheaties box, and that's a long-shot at this point.

Had Davis not participated in the Olympics, this story would be a mere blip on the radar. It dates back to an incident in 2002, and the lawsuit was filed in 2003.

Well, he's a gold and silver medalist in a sport that I quite enjoy. He does come across as something of a whiny prick though.

So, you insult Canada by calling it a hole and then you get his nationality wrong? Nice one "Moderator"  sarcastic

He isn't alone with this suit . . . and regardless . . . a few $$$ to shore up his account after the Nike and Wheaties endorsements end . . .

I said that becasue unless you're in football, baseball, baskbetball, or NASCAR, that 15 minutes of fame won't carry you very far. I hope he ends up being very successful and can put all of this behind him, but I doubt it. He'll end up strung-out in a halfway house down the block from the Betty Ford Clinic by the time the next Winter Olympics begins! (humor) Can you say Tonya Harding?

Speed skating is one sport, figure skating another, but I guess that doesn't matter when one is looking to defame. Is it any wonder why these types of lawsuits still have to be brought in this day and age? I was going to suggest delete on your post, but on second thought, it should stay, so it stands as an example for everyone to know how you think.

Um, this guy's mom worked hard to be able to move from a poor part of Chicago to a suburb in so her kid could train in the sport he loves. Shani Davis' whole life has been dedicated to speed skating. You are barking way up the wrong tree there are you aren't funny

They've repeatedly said on the speed skating broadcasts that Davis now lives in Calgary, Alberta for training...

Given the way the US Speed Skating Team (or one member specifically anyway) treats him, I can't blame him. I believe the reason he trains there is that they have an Olympic Class oval and is over 1000m in elevation, which allows for better VO2 training. I think that Short Track was his first event and that was trained in Evanston.

Much ado about nothing, as far as I'm concerned. As AeroWesty said, we wouldn't even hear about this if it weren't for him being in the Olympics. I do have to say, though, that as much as I was happy for him for becoming the first black athlete to win an individual medal at the winter games, his ego has started to tick me off. And Hendricks' whining isn't much better.

Apparently Tonya Harding's fifteen minutes of fame have lasted quite a while, since you know her name eight years after the incident.  Yeah sure

Yeah, because I saw her on some comical boxing match on TV, not because of her skating in the Winter Olympics. Maybe Davis should go into boxing after the Olympics!

To clear up the confusion as to Shani Davis, he is a junior at Northern Michigan University; home of the United States Olympic Education Center. (He did do his final training in Calgary) This information comes from the Marquette Mining Journal. Since the Education Center is located on the campus, a number of winter US Olympic athletes have attended the school. Cross-Country Skiing; speed skating are the top sports.

No dispute . . . I'm sure the CPD isn't any more stellar than perhaps NPOD in some ways . . .

It has to do with the fact that in both sports you significantly develop your leg muscles and VO2

They aren't doing this to "play" anything. These aren't people who are looking for sympathy because they did something wrong, they are trying to remedy a situation that is all to common in the US.

While the NOPD, even with their spiffy new uniforms, don't have a great reputation, they aren't the ones who were exposed to have coerced hundreds of confessions that led to people being placed on death row.
