Took this pic with my phone last week, there were about 10 cars similarly disguised, anyone have an idea what it might be?

yes and there were a couple of German registered Mercedes support cars with it. Care to guess at the model range?

I vote Mercedes on this one.

This car looks like it is a CLS variant (with the swooping side window line) of some kind - note the similarities...

If I was you, I would contact an auto magazine over this picture - they might just pay you a sum of money for it.

well look at the numberplate.. its a european numberplate. Why would a lexus or a toyota have European numberplates on it? To me it looks like a mercedes :P

possibly a new C-class? or was it too big? I doubt it would be a new E-class as the current one isn't that old yet. Also, another thing that makes me believe it is a mercedes is the curves. It looks like it has gotten some of its design adopted from the CLS:

I doubt it is a new E-class.. that would be too soon. Germans usually don't create new cars with the same model name as often as French and Italians. Might be a new C-class.I think the black covers make the car look bigger than it is.

Exactly what I thought. The E-class is fairly "new", but the C-class is in big need for a replacement, which I've heard is coming this or next year.

I doubt its a Benz too. Look at the exhaust... way too small for what would be under the hood of a Mercades Benz.

here's another view and you can compare the size with the E class station wagon in front of it. Sorry it's not very good, they appeared as we were driving out of a mall car park last Thursday lunchtime so I just grabbed the phone!

well the c-class is smaller than the e-class. what if they are testing a 2,0 liters engine for the model?

yes it definately is a mercedes since the cars behind it are mercedes cars aswell. And it looks a little smaller than the E-class so my final guess is a new c-class that coming up

Completely correct. And Mercedes does test in South Africa so that's possibly a Mercedes. Can't tell you which model though but it might be a new C class cause they want to do a new one.

But judging by the backlights it could be a BMW as well.
My sisters boyfriend works for BMW in Munich and he has to do test in South Africa for them quite often. So it could be that as well.
Strange to see a Darmstadt registration but that might be disguise as well.
Cause BMW should usually be "M" and Mercedes "S" (for Stuttgart).

PS: In the German press these cars are called "Erlkönig" ..

Hi

If you ask me its a test car for mercedes ( look at the lights they have the distinctive ripple) and they have basically but extra body on it to hide the lines from other car companys and when they get out of town they take the extra body off to do long road test's.

It is a new Skoda Superb. Why? Skoda is in Darmstadt and alway have the DA plates in all the advertisements.

So does Opel but not always.

The Above pic is of the current Superb.

Mercedes always have S plates, Stuttgart
Audi always have IN plates, Ingolstadt
VW mostly have WOB plates, Wolfsburg
BMW always have M plates, Munchen

Mercedes' test models usually wear BB, not S. I have seen many disguised cars as well as test cars that are already on the market, all MBs had BB on them.

Opel wears GG.

Judging by the convoi of E-classes I would though guess it is a MB, and I bet on the new C class then as it is about to be unveiled...

Possibly their foreign cars are all registered in DA - for whatever reason... hmmm
