I always wonder about this when I hear about Janet Jackson or Mariah Carey having more hits than the Beatles or Elvis or whatever... It seems like there was a time that even if you weren't into certain artists you knew all the big hits of the time, but I look at the "hits" of some of these artists and I've never heard of 90% of them. Will people still remember these songs years from now or are they just more disposable ephemera in our "15 minutes of fame" society.

While I can see both sides of the argument, there are a lot of other artists I haven't heard half of. Such as Fleetwood Mac's Greatest Hits album. Fleetwood are seen as a very famous and well respected band, but half the songs on the album I've never heard.
There are true stars out there these days, look at Robbie Williams, Madonna, even in the Hip Hop genre (Nelly, Black Eyed Peas).
To me a good band is one where you pick up the album and every song is good, and well known (even those not released).
Look at Shania Twain's album Come on Over, a recent album but pretty much every song on that album is well known, even though only a few were released.
James Blunt's album is brilliant, most of the songs are brilliant and I can easily listen to it all the way through, enjoying the music.
A good album is one you can listen to all the way through and enjoy most of the songs - sadly unlike a lot of modern artists.

A "hit" now only has to sell 3 copies instead of the 3 million needed back in "the good old days". I'm sure I heard that even ringtones are include in the sales figures used to compile the charts now.

I remember all there hits on there 'Greatest Hits' album plus more.

and also look how often a number one goes 'straight-in' at number one. It is all marketing and radio-play for months before release that makes pre-order figues look so high compared to 'the good old days'.
I remember when the charts had a 'highest climber' each week - now your lucky if any single climbs!

That absolutely winds me up big time. It used to be rare to go straight in at number one - it's every week now. James Blunt got a lot of respect from me after his single gradually crept up the charts to take its place at number 1. That's the difference between talent and plastic pop. Talent will earn the respect and sales, the rest is forced on us, then it's "Oops a daisy we got straight in at number 1!".
I don't think they should call it "Straight in at number 1" because it's not - it's already a hit in people's minds because they've heard it so much. They should make them release it as soon as it's first played on the radio, that would show them the real figures!

I also remember Boyz II Men (back in the early 90s) entered the chart at 32 and it took it something like 8 weeks to make it to No. 1.
Apart from all the 'boucing' between no 2 and no 1 at Christmas time I wonder what the last single was that 'climbed' to No 1from lower down the charts? Anyone?
