Why Do Aliens Have Big Black Eyes?

Why do most aliens, reported by abductees, have such large, reflective black eyes?

The eyes seem to take up most of the craniofacial region of the typical grey alien. Correspondingly, the alien skull would most likely have a very large orbit for each eye.

I would highly doubt that the eyes are anything like the camera-like human eyes, since alien eyes do not have pupils (no iris to form a pupil). Alien eyes would most likely have been an adaptation for dimly-lit, gloomy alien environments, not for the bright sunlight of Earth. Most aliens are reported to inhabit either subterranean environments or dimly-lit ship interiors.

How would an alien eye pick up light? Would it be spherical like most eyes, or would it be more like an insectoid eye?

What scares people so much about the alien eye? Does it probably have a telepathic or hypnotic effect on the human mind? Would there be a telepathic organ between the eyes in an alien brain? The alien eye seems to be a totally black reflective orb, like a pool of mercury or oil.

Because Chuck Norris double-roundhouse kicked them!

The only reason they haven't invaded yet is because they're too scared of Chuck Norris!

I actually saw something on TV once that suggested it may have something to do with the development of extreme visual accuity, but who knows, maybe we'll find out that was all bullshit when the aliens invade and they have big white googly eyes...

Okay, I have two proposals:

The first one is mine and it has to do with "ambient light." Notice that animals which are primarily nocturnal have proportionally larger eyes and pupils. Even if there are conditions for extraterrestrial life, it's unlikely that the same conditions of atmosphere and proximity to the nearest star would also be present. Therefore, it's more likely that extraterrestrial beings would need eyes that are different than ours, to "see" in the same spectrum of visible light detected by humans. Their eyes might actually "see" different spectra or stimuli, requiring a compound or multisensory organ that we would perceive as an "eye."

Second, I heard recently (I don't have a reference other than I think I heard it on that wonderful radio show, "Coast to Coast AM" with George Noory) that someone speculated it's our underdeveloped neonatal vision which is responsible for imagining aliens with large eyes. The speculation is that, as babies, we can't see more than blurry shapes, and we see other humans as flesh-colored entities with large eyes (a blurred image of eye, orbital area and eyebrow perceived as a single darkened area.) This memory becomes a subconscious idea of something foreign - alien - that we can't ever completely define or forget.

It's very simple Smithair747,
Our home planet (that doesn't exist anymore) was very far away from a light source, therefore nature equipped us with a larger eye, without pupil mechanism! The creatures on this planet have a more adapted eye.
we cannot get exposed into the light at this planet over day, and even moonlight is quite annoying as well, but our equipment overcomes that.

But the structure is the same as yours!

Here I have some lifestillmoments of me and my co-workers while exploring
an unoccopied residence of the upper intelligent life-form on this planet where you can very clearly see the structure of our eyes!
this is me when a co-worker took a lifestillmoment when I was smiling.

here I took the co-worker and you can clearly see the eye structure.
http://img477.imageshack.us/img477/6643/0069aj.jpg
we can close our eyes too, because they need to be moist.
http://img239.imageshack.us/img239/5729/0051mr.jpg
After that we where cut short by a horn nearby, so we had to go back...

(Anyway, for the ones that don't have seen War Of The Worlds, these scenes where awesome!)

I cannot tell how odd I found your question. Most people simply do not believe anyone that has been under the suposed trauma of being abducted ever happened. That perhaps after years and years of hollywood repeating the senario that this is just how it is. People who both believe and are skeptics buy into the stereotype.

For the sake of argument, how many animals or insects do you know with eyes similar to what you are asking? I suggest go that route and use the data for your agenda. If you ask about alien eyes, you'll just get slammed for bothering to believe in it (if you do) or they'll wonder why you asked at all.

On a side note, before asking why do they have big black eyes. . . have you proved, or have you seen REAL evidence and has it been shown to you, that aliens exist? Otherwise, this question is not important yet.  smile

Strange that we don't consider the Grays or other aliens to be cute, as well.  crazy

Hmm.... I wonder if the aliens are related to squirrels?

Why Do Aliens Have Big Black Eyes?

1. Because they were late coming home from barhopping in Proxima Centauri.....again.
2. Because they can't keep from making the comment, "Jeez, honey, your anal portal has gotten BIG!"
3. Because rednecks tend to buck when they get ass-probed. (right, ANC?)
4. Because they called Art Bell a "looney" at the Bay Area Conspiracy Theorists Convention.

Maybe I did not clarify at the beginning, but this is actually an attempt to speculate on the possible function/structure of those big black eyes on the prototypical grey alien, NOT to debate on whether aliens exist or not (I don't get involved in any arguments, debates, or controversies). I tend to think outside the box of orthodoxy and the "known" world; I tend to explore possibilities that may not have been explored before. I am known for my nature of thinking outside the box, going against the grain, and exploring the places where most people don't venture.

So, my purpose is not to debate endlessly and fruitlessly about ET's existence or engage in philosophical debates (which are useless to me). Instead, I have a very curious mind and a scientific background that enable me to speculate on the mysteries of (possible) extraterrestrial biology and anatomy. No one really can say they do or do not exist, so I don't presume either position, and it gives me freedom to explore.

Maybe that's one reason why I am creative and artistic and imaginative--these are ways of expressing myself and exploring "other worlds"!

No, I haven't touched anything--nor do I need anything to "help" me think/speculate this way!

I am known among family and friends for my rabid curiosity, fertile imagination, and my artistic/musical creativity. My artwork, dreams, and writings all reflect a mind that is blessed by God with an insatiable curiosity and creative imagination, so I don't need any outside substances to influence it. I have the freedom to explore realms of possibility that maybe others have not ventured into yet. It's an inborn creative talent.

My studies in anatomy/medicine have given more fuel to my curious mind, and enable me to, in this case, explore the world of xenobiology.

Besides, my physiology actually has no tolerance for alcohol (I tried a pint of Guinness once, and it made me DIZZY after just that one pint), and I can't stand smoke.

Thanks anyway!

I was giving you a heads up. IMO, your reaction is far from out-of-box.

Quoting SmithAir747 (Reply 20):

Let me tell you something from my own experiences: True outside-the-box thinking is the hardest form of thought. It requires you to not only question your beliefs, but have the ability to against yourself to prove a point. I know what it means to think outside the box, it's a risk, you're literally alienating yourself from the norm and inheriting all the stereotypes that go with it.

I have to remind myself that you are not trying to be objective, you have taken a stance. That said, try to create a foundation for your logic by coming up with analogies of what you are asking as opposed to going for the kill. You might not get a straight answer. Half your responses were jokes, yet ironically you come after me.  Smile Was I worth it? Keep in mind, you choose the debate as my original point only because you expected that argument to show up, you were prepared to explain how different you are, etc.

Outside-the-box is unknown territory, as soon as you expect something you are back in the box.

I have many thoughts on the physiology of said supposed aliens. Like their kind may have left their planet long ago and what we see are those that spent their lives purely in space with little gravity. I cannot image their mental breakdown, maybe a space-based equivalent of cabin fever, I'm surprised they have not wiped themselves out.

The meaning of life is curiosity; we were put on this planet to explore opportunities.
