It's a spanish language piece, but still:

The President of the football federation in that country says that it would be pointless for the team to participate in the tournament if the Civil War that is now engulfing that country continues by May. Some players have voiced similar concerns. They are begging both north and south in this conflict to lay down their arms 'and forget the grievances of the past'.

If this situation were to happen, Cameroon would take Cote D'Ivoire's spot, and would repeat a 1990 match between Argentina and Cameroon to open their World Cup group. In 1990 the match was the World Cup opening match in Italy, and Cameroon surprised the world by defeating Argentina, then reigning World Champions and later to reach the finals again, 1-0.

If there is no cease fire by May, Cote D'Ivoire's football team would seriously consider not participating in Germany.

I think that is stupid. I think that footbal and succes in Germant can unite a country. Maybe if they win a match or two, they could unite and stop the fighting, at least for a time.
Just my opinion.

And what a match that was, with a great at that time I believe 40 year old Roger Milla  Smile
