Yello.

Today starts a two week period where the worlds sporint fans should focus their attention on the great state of Alaska, where international sport will be centered

Today in Anchorage at 10am local the Iditarod starts, It will be the 34th running of the last great race. The dog sled race is run between Anchorage and Nome a distance of over 1000 miles.

http://www.iditarod.com/

The other major event going on up here over the next weeks are the Arctic Winter Games hosted by Alaska's Kenai Penninsula. This is a smaller more pure version of the heavily over-hyped and over commercialized winter Olympics.

These games started as a joint effort between Canada and Alaska in the 1970's and focuses on traditional sport of the high Arctic. Participating nations includeAlberta, Alaska, Yukon, Northwest Territories, Greenland, Nunavut, Yamal, Russia, Sami and Nunavik. Like I said this is a superior sporting event to Olymipics, more freindly, less crowded, less hyped, less doping.

And the competition - the games - are traditional Arctic and Native games - events . . . . not silly-assed "Olympic Games" like table tennis, basketball, beach volleyball, snowboarding . . . blah blah blah . . .

Umm ANC...hate to say this, but this isn't the NYO games. (Native Youth Olympics)

Table Tennis, Badminton, Basketball, Gymnastics, Vollyball and snowboarding are all events in these games.

The list can be linked here.

Didn't they have to have a dual start to the Idatarod last year due to lack of snow? Once in ANC for the show, then one up by FAI? How was it this year? I used to love to go freeze my butt on 4th and watch the start.

Yes and this year the "show" will still be in ANC and the restart will be in Willow . . . not enough snow in Wasilla.

The FAI start was about 3 years ago, I think. Actually, they have a dual start every year, if you want to be technical about it. One in Anchorage for the cameras and sponsors on Saturday and one in either Wasilla or Willow, depending on the year, where the race starts for real.

In addition to just being a quintessential Alaskan event (along with the Yukon Quest), I always like it because I know spring is right around the corner  Smile

Also, I wonder how long it will take this year for all of the PETA folks to pile on to the Iditarod.  Yeah sure

I don't think we'll get much "mud" in ANC this year - snowfall is behind the powercurve and the roads are alrady dry . . . in most places. Parking lots are still a mess - sorta full of 'ice pot holes' like it's May already!

Save for that one fairly cold spell in late December/early January it's been pretty mild in ANC this winter. (  shhh  don't tell the Global Warming folk).

A lot of the mushers from Healy where complaining that they had to drive to trining areas, so they couldn't run their teams as much as they would have normally.

Edit: Actually if they where historically accurate the Iditarod would start every year in Seward and then run the pass between Girdwood and Eagle River.

But of course Anchorage is the big city so that is where they start.

The Iron Dog was last month.....covered 1850 miles from Anchorage-Nome-Fairbanks in 35 hours-48 minutes-58 seconds.

But if you like you wait until Arcticman which is next month. Combines the best of sprint and distance snowmobile racing with watersking.

There are some traditions that never should be allowed to die.

And there are some that never should have never been started-Calling the area of Anchorage south of the Nordstrom store the "SO-NO" district of Anchorage.

Thanks for the Irondog link! Arctic Cat F6's ruled. Bombardier didn't even show in the top 5.

I went to the Arctic Cat website to check HP ratings (which were below the Mach Z?) and I saw the machine linked below. Total ANCFlyer "BAFSM".

I'm trying to find a link to a video of a guy doing a reverse 360 off of a jump with a powered sled. Ever seen it?

Ditto . . . . never had the need. Interestingly, I'm a born and bred Alaskan and I hate snow skiing, and never found a use for a snowmachine.

But, I've never found a place with a better summertime.

Ditto. Well, I haven't lived here my whole life, but still. Just never had the need for one. If I lived in a village and had a daily use for it than that's one thing, but otherwise I find them kind of annoying for recreational use. When I go out into the woods, I like to be able to enjoy the quiet. There are plenty of other things that I more urgently need that I could spend $5000 on besides a sled.

But I'm like L-188; if I had a cabin somewhere and needed it for access, then I'd get one.

I also remember the story from a few years ago when some jerk was riding his sled on the Iditarod trail outside Wasilla, during the Iditarod, and ran into a musher and his team. I believe the musher had to drop several dogs due to injury (can't remember if he scratched or not) because of this guy, who was also kind enough to hit and run.

I don't remember that story. I do remember that a few years back there was a couple of skiers out of Knik that had a run in with a snowmobiler tresspassing on a groomed ski trail.

I don't remember that story.

It was either the '01 or '02 Iditarod. I read about it in the Frontiersman; I'm sure it was in the ADN as well.

From what I've read, snowmachiners around Wasilla/Willow have become something of a problem for mushers during the Iditarod because people like to follow the race along the trail. And let's face it, when you're driving a sled, there is no way in hell you can hear a dog team, or anything else for that matter.
