QFF has set me thinking, not that I care either way but what do the Kiwis think about NZ becoming a Republic and ditching Her Majesty and the Gov General?

How would you vote?

I guess we would have to see what alternative model was put forward.

I don't believe our national identity is compromised or altered by the fact that our head of state is the queen. ie, if the arrangement were to change, I don't think I'd feel anymore or less kiwi.

Which begs the question, what's the point? Certainly no trade or defence benefits. Given a good alternative I think I would take it

It's up to the people of New Zealand. I'm not going to apply my views on Australia becoming a republic to New Zealand, it's an entirely different country and therefore there are completely different issues involved.

I will venture the opinion that republicanism in NZ is far less pervasive and is less of an issue with regards to anything royal. Over here - any time a Royal shows up the newspapers fill the editorial comments with for or against arguments. I've met some very impressive New Zealand republicans in the past, and I do not doubt their passion and resolve one bit.

not really any of my business since I don't currently live in NZ ( although I am back for a visit and so happy to be here ) but I think it is time that we/they "cut the apron strings " - then again , I currently live in a Kingdom so who am I to talk ?

You're a New Zealand passport holder aren't you? You're more than entitled to say anything you want about your own country.

Not any more, he moved to Belgium! A heresey that were it understandable would no doubt cause him to be thrown into a bottomless pit.  Smile
