Anything, our family's cat freaks out at the slightest sound, sudden movement, and will growl at anyone not myself, my mom or my step-dad. The worst is clanging dishes or a hair-dryer. Not water, though, she'll jump in a bath/shower whilst someone's inside.

For my dog its gunshots and the coffee table. The gunshots are fairly obvious, but not desirable for a bird-dog. But the coffee table is quite funny. She will be laying next to it, and Ill move the table slightly. She thinks its coming after her, will bark at it etc. Then Ill move it away from her and she tries to attack it. Its really something to see. I should video it sometime and share.

My cats were afraid of the sponge mop. Absolutely terrified. They were fearless with almost everthing else. I could run the roaring vacuum cleaner into them and they totally ignored it. But the sponge on the mop made them crazy, they hissed and slapped it with their paws, but only when the mop was moving. They never figured out that it was me who made the mop move, they thought it was moving by itself.

Our old dog was terrified by running water, get out the garden hose and she'd run for the door. Strange thing was that she was a lab mix. I thought all labs loved the water.

My dog is afraid of the toaster, oven, cellophane, and balls. Sometimes, though, he'll skitter away for no apparent reason.

Quoting NWADC9 (Reply 8): My dog is afraid of the toaster
I'm afraid of the toaster! No joke. My stupid toaster makes a sound like a gunshot when it lifts the toast up. It always makes me jump. I usually go into the bedroom and close the door to muffle the sound so I don't jump.

Our Golden Retriever, Lily is not afraid of anything so far. In fact she enjoys being vacuumed! Yes I know almost every other dog I have ever had runs from the vacuum, Lily will both follow you as you vacuum she will also sit and expect you to vacuum her all over with the attachments.

My Cat is afraid of:
Snow.
Loud Noises.
Anything that stares at her.
Things that move quickly.
Wind (or things that blow).
Blankets moving.
Christmas trees and ornaments.
Strange though, that she is not afraid when our car comes roaring up the driveway. She just sit there, and watches us, then when we stop, she starts to roll around. She is also not afraid of people at all. Nor is she afraid of the kitchen stove, learned the hard way with that one...

My dogs are afraid of fireworks. On the 4th of July (you Brits call it Thanksgiving) we were setting some fireworks off in the street. When we went back inside we couldn't find the dogs anywhere. We searched and searched and after about 30 minutes found them huddle under my BBQ smoker rig on the back deck that we had walked by a couple of times.

Most of my cats are afraid of the vacuum cleaner and thunder, but what scares them out of their wits is bloody fireworks. I HATE fireworks.
One notable exception on the vacuum cleaner is my black cat, I have on occasion sucked his tail into the pipe, because he will not give up his spot for the advancing vacuum cleaner. Fortunately it is only a hose with no moving parts. Strange thing is, he is probably the most afraid of thunder and fireworks of all my cats.

The two youngest of my mom's dachshunds (she has 3) has some pretty funky fear. One is afraid of snow - if there's snow on the ground when they're let out in the morning, you can count on her to make a 180 degree turn the moment one paw touches the snow. And the other one refuses to go for a walk without the oldest dog (his mother) - and that's despite he's the largest one of them all, by far
