I haven't started any flame-wars for a while, and since I'm bored at work I thought I might as well give one a go ......  Smile

So, my fellow IT geeks, what MTA do you prefer and why?

For me it's got to be Exim, but I'm quite partial to using Postfix and even Sendmail when appropriate ...... the only one I've ever not liked using/setting-up has to be Qmail.

Let the sensible discussion (and flaming) begin ......

Kirkie,

Your delusional thoughts in relation to this topic stem mainly from the fact that despite having an IT degree, you don't even know what a fucking MTA is!!!!!!!

And then you wonder why you can't get an IT job .........  Silly

In addition to filling in an obvious omission in Mr Kirk's knowledge, please enlighten those of us who live in the real world as to what an MTA is? I guess it's not Mass Transit Authority, as my answer would be Hong Kong followed by Boston.

I of course know what an MTA is, but here's a definition for those who don't:

MTA
Last modified: Thursday, September 20, 2001

Short for message transfer agent, the program responsible for receiving incoming e-mails and delivering the messages to individual users. The MTA transfers messages between computers. Hidden from the average user, it is responsible for routing messages to their proper destinations. MTAs receive messages from both MUAs and other MTAs, although single-user machines more often retrieve mail messages using POP. The MTA is commonly referred to as the mail server program. UNIX sendmail and Microsoft Exchange Sever are two examples of MTAs.

Kirkie- if you're going to insist on quoting verbatim from Internet sources rather than your own (rather shallow) pool of knowledge, at least try and make sure the source you're quoting is accurate.  Smile

It's a "Mail Transfer Agent" - the bit of code that is more commonly (but inaccurately) known as an SMTP server, which is basically the program that transfers mail from one server to another, ready to be delivered to your mail client via a POP or IMAP server (or other protocols).
