Car veers onto sidewalk, kills teacher

CULVER CITY, California (AP) -- The driver of a vehicle that barreled onto a sidewalk, killing a teacher and injuring eight young students, was arrested Wednesday, police said.

Laura Samayoa, 20, of Los Angeles, was booked for investigation of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and hit-and-run collision involving a fatality, authorities said.

She told police the crash was caused when her boyfriend grabbed the steering wheel during an argument, police Sgt. Brian Fitzpatrick said.

An attorney for the passenger, 19-year-old Reynaldo Cruz, said his client told him he didn't grab the car's steering wheel.

"He flatly denies that," attorney Peter Navarro told The Associated Press.

Samayoa and Cruz were being held on $400,000 bail. Cruz, who turned himself in late Wednesday, was booked on the same charges, said police Lt. Chris Maddox.

The injured students, whose ages ranged from 10 to 13, had just left a nearby school when the car barreled onto the sidewalk about 3 p.m., Maddox said."

UNC Grad Charged With Attempted Murder After Plowing Crowd

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — A recent University of North Carolina graduate was charged with nine counts of attempted murder Saturday, a day after authorities say he drove through a popular campus gathering spot in an attempt to avenge Muslim deaths.

Derek Poarch, chief of the university police department, confirmed Saturday that Mohammed Reza Taheri-azar, a 22-year-old Iran native, told investigators he wanted to "avenge the deaths or murders of Muslims around the world." Poarch would not provide any other details on the motive.

Taheri-azar also is charged with nine counts of assault."

Car Kills Man On Las Vegas Strip

(AP) A driver intentionally steered his car onto a sidewalk on the crowded Las Vegas Strip and then accelerated in a deadly scene resembling "humans being mowed down like a lawnmower," police said Thursday.

One person died and 13 were hospitalized, many with major injuries, after Wednesday's crash. A 27-year-old man faces charges of murder and attempted murder, Deputy Police Chief Greg McCurdy said.

"It appears he did this intentionally. The reason is questionable," McCurdy said Thursday.

The man, Stephen Michael Ressa of Rialto, Calif., had also been sought by his hometown police in a near-fatal assault Monday on his mother, who owned the car Ressa was driving in Las Vegas.

The victims, including 11 tourists, were walking in front of the Bally's and Paris hotel-casinos on Wednesday when the car struck them, then crashed into a wall and came to a stop in a landscaped area in front of Bally's.

The injured were strewn along the sidewalk and were being treated in the street by emergency personnel as stunned tourists looked on. Traffic on the Las Vegas Strip was stopped for almost five hours."

Eight killed as car plows through Santa Monica farmers market

SANTA MONICA – A car driven by an elderly man plowed through a crowded farmers market Wednesday, killing eight people including a 3-year-old girl and injuring up to 45 others.

The car left a trail of death, injury and destruction along three downtown blocks of Arizona Avenue that were closed for the street market, catching victims by surprise, according to witnesses."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's quite clear we need to ban these dangerous vehicles before someone attempts to do this at an elementary school playground or a shopping mall!

Only the police and the military should be allowed to own cars!

Vehicles with automatic transmissions are especially dangerous as they allow many more people to be mowed down without shifting!

SUV's are potentially the most dangerous killing machines ever with their heavier weight, powerful engines, and strengthened drivetrains and suspensions! Suburbanite soccer moms have no business posessing such power! They are not needed for legitimate transportation and have only one purpose- to kill more people!

High-capacity gas tanks should also not be allowed!

As a compromise, we might allow cars to be sold only after a 5-day waiting period and an extensive background check!

Which one, Paul or Ringo? Or should I say Sir Paul? Wonder if Ringo feels slighted at that?

But then how are you supposed to get to the elementary school or mall in a country where your corner store is 5 miles away.

On this I agree. Trucks and SUVs should be reserved for those who really need them, like farmers, plumbers and towtruck drivers.

Quoting StuckinMAF (Thread starter):

Huh?

There is a better way. Right now, when you sell a car in the US, you normally sell it WITH the licence plates. Stop that, and make the licence plate something that is uniquely issued to a specific combination of car and driver. When you buy the car, you have to take the papers and proof of insurance to the authorities who issue you your plates. No insurance, no proof of ownership, no plates. And of course, if you have a dangerous traffic record, they can refuse to give you plates.

If you do not pay your insurance premiums, the insurance company must notify the authorities, who will come to your house and remove your plates. Same thing happens if you don't pay your annual registration fee, or the car is judged to be unroadworthy.

This is the system we have in Switzerland, and as a result, 100% of cars on the road have insurance.

Only if you extend the principle to everything else; drugs, anthrax, nuclear weapons. These things are always a question of degree.

It's rather rare though that I see a thread on A-Net where the user of Drugs is villified solely for being a user of drugs whereas the owners of guns on this site are villified on a fairly frequent basis - only because they own a gun(s).

Like I said, the thread is over the top a bit - but it made it's point.

That's incorrect. Whenever there's a change of ownership of a vehicle, the previous owner's plates stays with said previous owner; who in turn will go to the appropriate authority/agency to either return the plate to or legally transfer the plate onto their next vehicle.

Quoting Cfalk (Reply 13):
If you do not pay your insurance premiums, the insurance company must notify the authorities, who will come to your house and remove your plates.

In some states, the equivalent can or does happen. Here in Pennsylvania, one receives a notice to turn their plates (they call them tags) to PennDOT should their insurance coverage expires beyond 30 days. While one could technically drive around (w/the plate(s) still attached); should they either get pulled over or have an accident, they're either fined, arrested or both.

Quoting Cfalk (Reply 13):

Many states (Massachusetts & Pennsylvania being 2 of them) require insurance on vehicles in order to be legally registered.

Yes, but my point was the argument that it's not the item it's only the user (pun intended) that's to blame is an argument for the complete de-regulation of everything. Now, that's a legitimate position, albeit an extreme one. Once you accept the question of some restriction on ownership of any item, then it merely becomes a question of degree. The grey area is where we all lie, the question is where we are within that. Incidentally, I would say that usually it is the gun laws that are vilified rather than the gun owners themselves, but I take your point.

Good, you don't need to justify it. Why the need for this thread then? I'm more than aware that it was tongue in cheek, it wasn't amusing though. Why would you put so much effort into a thread that has no point? Were you trying to provoke reactions out of people? Did you think that people would find your commentary hilarious? Or did you think that nobody would respond to it because there was nothing to say or debate?

The only thing foolish about my post was taking the bait, twice. As far as i'm concerned everything on this messageboard is pointless, but your post takes that title more than most.
