Collecting Stuff In Excess

I was just wondering:

Do any of you collect certain items "in excess" just because you really like it/them? In other words, you have far more of something than you could ever hope to use, coming close to, but not actually becoming an obsession.

I admit it, I'm guilty of it:

With reel to reel tapes and machines.

Although I've stopped this other hobby now, I still have obscene amounts of airlin related paraphernelia boxed up that one day, I'm going to take down to the airliners convention, and try and sell....or else it's going to end up in the trash can.
I now have 5 (FIVE) machines in my posession, even though I will never use more than two of them at a time.

I have two Teac X-1000R decks, 2 teac X-2000R decks, and one Akai GX-635 deck.

I have one of the X-2000R's and one X-1000R hooked up (I recently swapped out the Akai deck with one of the -1000's).

The other three decks are sitting in my closet.

What can I say? I love those decks. They are hard to find, and when found, especially in good condition like mine are, they get VERY expensive.

Then, since I have so many decks, I had to stock up on blank media as well.

Here is the inventory of UNUSED tape that I have so far:

Maxell XLI 35-180B: 24 rolls
Maxell UD 35-180: 26 rolls
Maxell UD 35-180 (older version): 7 rolls
Maxell XLII 35-180EE: 4 rolls
Maxell UD-XLI 35-180B: 1 roll
Sony FeCr 180: 4 rolls
TDK LX 35-90: 4 rolls (to be spliced onto 10" reels later)
Maxell LN 35-180: 1 roll (in unmarked box)

2 Maxell 10" empty reels
1 Scotch Classic 10" empty reel
4 TDK professional 10" empty reels

Like I said, that's just my so far unused stockpile.

I have about 20-22 tapes that are recorded on.

So what kind of obsessive hobbies/collections do you have?

It used to be computer games for me. If you looked into my room in my parents' house in Germany, you'd see about two and a half metres of the empty game boxes on top of my wardrobe, and you would find just as much spread over other rooms in the house. The sad thing is, I'm a crap gamer. Out of all these games, costing me all of my pocket money and charm (to get lots of xmas presents, birthday presents etc. etc.) I finished about 2 or 3 without consulting walkthroughs. (Tomb Raider 2 and Messiah) Most of the others, I did not finish at all. Some I managed with a walkthrough (Discworld 2).

Another problem is that I feel bad about throwing things away. My room here in England has almost a metre of piled up magazines that I will never read again, but feel bad about throwing away...

I admit it too, girls phone numbers. I just can't seem to get enough. Some girls I call, some I don't, but I just like knowing I got their number!

I have a knack for not spending change, so I have tons of it in my room....especially the $AU 31 in change that I neglected to spend before leaving Oz...I dunno what I am going to do with it...

When I was younger, about 8 or 9 I had a massive collection of those plastic rings that sealed some types of bottles....I had about 900 of them before my mom threw them out...the stupidest collection (and the biggest) that I can profess to ever being involved with...

I used to collect the herpa wings 1:500 for about a year. I do have approximately up to 200 or more - no idea how many there are somewhere stored in the boxes in a closet. It was somehow interesting for some time, now i don´t care anymore.
But i´m edicted to shirts and ties, every month i need to get at least 3-4 ties and shirts.

You can never have too many reel to reel tapes or equipment. I wish I still had mine. Are they still produced? I'd love to get a new one.

I have a Sony TC 640B, three motor, three head, SOS, live mike, and an echo chamber. I haven't recorded anything since the late 70's but I still listen to the tapes when I'm alone and feeling nostalgic.

Cool stuff!

For me it's coffee mugs. Every time I go someplace new I have to buy one with the name of the place (either city or state) on it. A lot of mugs are places I've never actually seen as a tourist, but I've changed planes there. I have about 80. 25 are on the kitchen counter and rest are in boxes on top of one of my closet shelves.

I don't even drink that much coffee any more and when I do, its usually out of the same one, my "Planet of the Jellies" coffee mug that my parents got while visiting the Monterey Bay Aquarium in Monterey, CA.

I collect reel to reels also as you may already know Matt D

It's great to hear that there are other users here into reel to reel tapes.

I have a Teac A3340, Teac A2340 (4-channel) open reel deck. Akai GX-280 and a Sony (2-channel) open reel deck.
I have close to 100 reel to reel tapes. Mostly 1970s rock, r&b, jazz and 1960s lounge/bossa nova music.

I also have over 1,500 8track cartidges.
2 quadraphonic Technics player/recorders and 1 Marantz (Superscope) stereo 8track player/recorder with Dolby (TM) noise reduction.

I have 1,877 Lp records. I actually counted them all
Nothing beats 1970s audio equpment and music.
Hell nothing beats 1970s cars either!
I have/had a 1977 Linoln Town Car, 1978 Lincoln Mark V, and a 1974 Lincoln Mark IV.
not all at the same time of course.

Reminds me of a joke we had in italian lessons some time ago... the teacher asked us if we collected anything and someone said money.
I collect aluminium drink cans. I do have quite a lot of them, too much to maintain actually...

Um.. old computers? Actually, this isn't me, it's my brother, but I must admit to giving him more than a helping hand!

Off the top of my head:

2 Z80s, 1 ZX 81, 1 Spectrum +2, C64, Atari, Superbrain, Amstrad CPC 64, Oric 2, BBC Micro, MSX, IBM XT, 8088, 8086, 286, through to present day.

Oh, and one of those table thingies that you could play Pong on.

Sure there's more than that - they're all (except the Superbrain) operational. If anyone has a CP/M disk for that it'd be appreciated!!
