Hey there. I promised my friend I would help him troubleshoot why his tail lights won't work (I suspect a shorted wire), and was wondering if anybody here has the repair manual for the 96 and newer Dodge Caravan. If you do, and have a scanner, any chance you could scan the page with the wiring diagram for tail lights?

Any help would be appreciated.

I used to have a Chrysler LeBaron convertible and the tailights went out as did the instrument panel lights. The short was found under the dash. The rubber coating had rubbed off exposing the copper wire to bare metal causing the short.

They are, 96- 04/5 i beleive, but i know the 96 and 03 are the same.

The current bodystyle Caravan was introduced in 2001 so the manual you'd need would be for the 1996 through 2000 model vans. The 2001 and newer models are different so manuals for those wouldn't be much help.

I would either visit a bookstore for a manual or drop by the closest Dodge dealership and see if they'd let you take a look at that particular manual.

Now....how do I know all this?

Simple. I had a 1987 Voyager that I bought brand new, and scrupulously maintained-professional aircraft mechanic, the best of care. The last 75,000 miles and four years it was a money pit, and I was under it every damned weekend trying to keep it running or it was in the Plymouth dealers getting some hugely expensive component replaced.
air conditioning never worked worth a damn
$750 bowling ball plastic carburetor died
radiator blew up
both halfshafts destroyed
axle boots every four months
rear axle bearings
alternator
$500 timing gears and chains
2 head gaskets
two exhaust systems
front end and McPherson struts self destructed
wouldn't run in the rain

finally the transmission died with a hole in it a block from home. Good thing-the engine was shot too.

the guy who towed it away acted as if he was doing me a favor.

all that to get a lousy 216,000 miles out of it which must be some kind of a fucking record.

Lol. That's almost what happened the first time. Somebody broke into it, stole his golf clubs, a bunch of Burger King coupons (must have been hungry) and then opened the fuse box and ripped out the entire fusebox, as well as cut every wire under the hood.

The radiator actually DID blow up. The top and bottom tanks were plastic and they always wept a little along the seam. So one day me and mamasan are in the van putting along in town, not a particularly hot day, plenty of coolant, all temps normal and I hear from under the hood: POOT! and this big cloud of steam comes out.
The top tank blew off. It was lying there.

What a huge nasty piece of shite and expensive at that.

They're like Fiats-good if you dump them every three years or 60,000 miles, but beyond that, you're toast.

While not a minivan but still in the Chrysler family, My parents use to own a 1993 Grand Cherokee. Never a problem with the good 'ol AMC I6 but practically every electrical component that came from Chrysler was replaced. They replaced the radio 4 times in 10 years, put a computer in for $1000, 3 ignition switches, 3 front axles, you name it and it probably was replaced. This Jeep was bought new by my parents and was always very well kept. She made it to just under 229,000 before they got tired of it and gave up. If you're into vans, then avoid Chrysler/Plymouth/Dodge unless you like throwing money away.

I'm supposed to call him tomorrow and he'll try and get that diagram for me. He also asked if your friend had ever towed anything with this van; apparently, it's common for people to short the lights out by having a wire touch a trailer hitch (or something like that), and he says that if that's the case, it should be as simple as replacing a fuse. You might check into that... meanwhile, I'll find out tomorrow if he's got what you're looking for.

I can relate to the horror stories of owning a front-drive Chrysler product.
My 1987 Chrysler LeBaron convertible was a very beautiful car that stayed in showroom condition, even when I got rid of it in 2003. That's because it spend half it's life in the repair shop. I learned to be an excellent mechanic the 5 years I had that car.

My best advice would be to get rid of the Caravan and buy the Dodge Magnum instead!   
That has all the cargo room you need and best of all, it's a rear-drive Hemi powered V8.  
Same gas milaged as the minivan, yet twice the power.
Now that is something Chrysler CAN do right!

If you insist on a minivan, go for the GMC Safari. Again that is a rear-drive van with a potent 4.3 V6.
Don't buy a Mazda, that's just silly.  
Front-drive vans should have NEVER happened.

Awesome. As far as I know, he hasn't towed anything. He said the problems started when somebody ripped his van apart in the parking lot. He had a "mechanic" get it back up and running, but it keeps burning the wire he said. I'm gonna check it out on Saturday, but it would be nice to have the schematics. Send me an email through the interface if you get a hold of them.

Well, I was looking for a Toyota Previa because I am finished with expensive and fragile front wheel drive setups but I could not find one at a price I wanted to pay. I got the Mazda with everything working fine and 90,000 miles on it for $2,400. It's a lot better than my Voyager was brand new.

I've got a '96 Grand Caravan that my dad gave us about three years ago. They bought a Honda Odyssey. While I'm glad he gave it to us, and it enabled me to outgrow my '93 Saturn (which was having its own issues), it's now become a money pit.

I had to replace the transmission in it about 18 months ago, and just a couple of weeks ago I had to change the solonoids/sensors. Now I'm starting to notice a slight shake in the tranny when shifting from low into second. Friggin' Aamco ripped me off. It's also got numerous minor leaks in both the oil lines and the a/c lines, that aren't major issues in and of themselves, but I ain't laying out the $2,500 I've been quoted to fix everything.

I should have bought that Mercury Mariner I was ogling a month or two before Katrina, though Superfly's Safari idea sounds like a winner.

I have the Manual for that particular Minivan:

First remove the lower dash over the pedals
Locate the switch to the brake lights (easy is a cable that goes into a plastic dohikey)
That plastic part has to be removed (its easy)

Buy the switch for less than 15 USD$, replace it and reconect.
It has a piston that can be adjusted so the brake lights, light up at the ammount of depressing the pedal you want to set...

It wont be a fuse since the rear left and right light have diferent fuses and the probability of both going at the same time is ASTRONOMICAL.

Yeah, it's not a fuse. What happened is that when the knuckleheads ripped apart his fusebox, it all had to be put in place. Somewhere along the line, I'm believing a short happened. The mechanic who fixed reinstalled the wires, but it has since then burned twice, according to my friend. Exactly what he means with burned, I don't know. I will bring my voltmeter with me and do some poking around.

I have the big brother myself, and I'm very happy with it (98 Interpid). I bought it in Aug 04 with 84,000 miles on it. It currently has 126,500, and all I've had to change was the ignition cylinder and idler tension pulley. (Plus the stuff I broke when I crashed obviously...lol). My tires are starting to get bad, and of course maintenance items (plugs, oil, filters etc.)
