Well all the obvious stuff like names, baby stuff, car seat, money. But back to basics get yourself a sturdy mop and bucket to help the missus with morning sickness. Make sure you have all her favourite junkfood in the house. Oh and if you want to be a real sweetheart tell her you will give up everything she has to give up for 9 months just to show how much you care, huge brownie points

First of all, think about a good excuse to let your wife wake up at night to feed the baby or change his nappies. Something like: "I got an important meeting tommorow, I must sleep good tonight".
Then think about buying a good barrel of patience, something I really have a lack of (I got 3 sebo-monsters, the little one being 2 months old).
For God's sake, don't buy a "monospace" like many French do when they have a kid, or even worse a SUV, that's totally useless. If you need space, it will be in the "coffre" (sorry don't know the English word) so you better buy a "break" (station wagon ?).

No worry about that. I don't like minivans and loathe SUV's.
If we have 2 or more I am eyeing a nicey Audi station wagon

Well Done! Life as you know it will change, and you will look back at the time prior to kids as a waste of time.
The first suggestion, worked for us twice, if you really want to have a child, and keep a positive attitude, the pregnancy should go easier. The second thing is, YOUR CHILDREN WILL BE JUST LIKE YOU! I have found out during the last three years with my son. Payback can be a bitch! But of course he is obsessed with LEGOs, and I can barely get him on an airplane w/o him wanting to close the door and leave. So your hobby might become even more important. Imagine if your son/daughter likes airplane spotting, now you have to take them with you. Its the same reason I can buy more legos now, you know, 'its for the kids'.
The money part is important, but more important is for you to be with them. I grew up in a very comfortable household, but when I recall and when I talk to others about their childhood, most of their fondest memories dont involve money, but an experience shared with family. So prepare to spend time with them.
